BB couple building nests in 3 different boxes

Hello all,

I am in Ontario, Canada (very close to Ogdensburg, NY) and have been b-birding since 2002. I have had 6 out of these 8 years have active nestings with 38 babies successfully fledged. In 2005, I experienced the joy (shock!) of 6 BB eggs in one nest (who all later successfully fledged) as well as having a 3rd nesting that same season which are both fairly rare occurrences this far north, but I have never, ever seen such crazy behaviour as this spring.

Has anyone ever experienced a bb couple defending AND building nests in 3 separate boxes at the SAME TIME?? Two of the boxes are within 50 feet of each other on one side of the house and the third box is out sight at our human ground level (but not from bird's eye view) on the other side of the house.

Mrs. B started building in one box and has now started 2 more in 2 different boxes. Not just single strands of grass but full blown mouthful after mouthful of grass into each of the 3 boxes! I can just barely see the bottom of the nest box floor in the 3 boxes with the 3rd box having the best nest-like formation. She works on one nest in the early morning (7-8 am), takes a break, than switches to the one at the side of the house for a while (9-10) then starts in on the 3rd box for about an hour or so (11-12)

What is going on!?! Are they getting revved up for another banner year of nesting? I don't know if I can afford mealies for another 3 nesting season!! :)

My stars! Are you soaking those mealworms in high test coffee? I have never heard of this behavior. Sounds like she is trying to dominate the habitat. Surely she will settle on one nest since she cannot possibly incubate eggs in more than one. Keep us posted.

Same thing happens to me every year !!!

They build 3 boxes and then they nest in only one next time they go to the next one if it's in good condition and they keep checking on the boxes all the time.

Just a week ago one of the boxes got insects and they stopped checking. Then I checked and had to spray it but they already got eggs in one of the other.

I found some 2x4s laying around, if you don't have any you can get the stud grade I have them at Lowe's for $1.57 for the 2x4 x96 studs. I used about five, if I count my scrap. Then I used a peace of 15/32 inch plywood at 2FT x 4FT as the bottem. I ran a 4FT peace of 2X4 on one side, and four 18 inch peaces on the ends standing up right with supporting 2x4 peaces forming a box at the top and bottem of my up right peaces. Make sure the supporting peaces are on the outside, as you will need them later. My only question, of witch I have not tested, as I still have nails to cut off before doing this, is I atached screening to the short ends as I was reading that a open air coop is better then a dark dank closed up coop. I then took some old barn wood from a barn we took down next dore, and used it for the back as I didn't have any more plywoodI then started running out of scroos, hints the nails that I have to cut off, my framing gun only had really long nails in it at the time. I plan to add a hinged top as I am thinking of cutting an opening in the coop wall, and ataching the box over it on the outside so that the Hens can go in and out at will. I spent in all $20 on my coop and nesting box. I had the deck scroos and the 15/32 plywood left over from building the dog houses, and the 1/4 sheets were removed from the walls of the house when we took out the old bathroom. This is why I tell people not to get rid of things that you might use later. if anyone has a good idea about the screened sides, Please let me know if I should close them up. On the coop, I am installing a screen dore on the south side, that can close at night, but open in the day time to let the hens out to the yard.

itrom.......Last year when chickadees took over our fave BB box after so many year of having only BBs in the box there were reclaim fights but the BBs did not win and we never saw any all summer and that was sad. That particular box is the one we can see easily and we love to watch them and take photos. There are two other boxes nearby so I kept asking myself why can't the cute chickadees just use those...lol. BBs have moved into the fave box and I hope there is peace! Good luck and enjoy whatever nests ...or...put up another box and if you do make sure you follow instructions as to how far from the fist one.

Sounds like you really have some challenges. You have my sympathies! A tiny poked hole is more likely a house wren's thin sharp beak, sometimes taking them some distance away, or simply tossing them out. The house sparrow will toss the eggs out, but their finch-like beak would not as likely make a tiny poke hole. And the HOSP is more likely to stick around, harass, or even take over the cavity. "Do BB's destroy their own eggs" ... No "the nest possibly could have been flooded?" ... are there leaks that could be fixed? "Are the HOSP really sneaky" ... yes, but HOWR are sneakier ... "and resistant to the Sparrow Spooker?" ... yes, and house wrens will not be deterred by a sparrow spooker. House Wrens are even sneakier, faster and silent, leaving no evidence behind, only destroying eggs or young. You might hear them singing, but might never, ever see them! BlueBars, I nearly had a heart attack! First I found the dirty water in my dogs water bowl and then I found the paw prints! I took photos and my exterminator assured me they were raccoon paw prints! He lives in the country and shoots and traps coons all the time so I knew he'd know. My dog sleeps upstairs in bed with me so she never heard a thing and my hubby travels often and was out of town. The only thing that I hated was that he (HUBBY) didn't walk into the kitchen in the middle of the night to find that raccoon! LOL! That would have been the last straw with my obsessive bird feeding! First we had roof rats (yep, I was told to get rid of my back yard feeders) and then the raccoon! I find it amazing that the raccoon went through not only one dog door but two. He had to enter the screened in porch through one, then go through the next one into the kitchen! Ate the dog food, washed up in the water bowl and went right back out the way he came in! LOL! The dog doors are always closed off at night.... now!

Geesh, I'm out of breath just thinking about it!
Too funny! Hormones? Greed? The coffee Linda mentioned? What the heck's in the water?
Do other birds ever use the other boxes, like chickadees or nuthatches or anything? If not, when she settles down to one box and begins egg-laying, you might want to take the stress off her and remove the other two half-built boxes. Poor girl.
Imagine having to keep up 3 human homes without a housekeeper and maintenance crew! And the male is probably doing triple-duty security detail to maintain their claim on their "territory."

LOL! I do feed a lot of mealies!! I got home from work tonight and the mystery I think has been solved. There is definitely a completed nest in the third box which of course is the least weather worthy in that it is only 1/2" wood and not my home made true 1" wood construction. But I guess I shouldn't worry as many, many TRES have fledged from that box sucessfully.

It looks like the other 2 nests are at the same stage as yesterday so she must have finally decided the slightly smaller box was easier to fill up and kept going with it.

Now we'll see how many eggs she deems it worthy of having!

I have the same situation, except with two nests in boxes that are about 25 feet apart. This is the first year I have seen this behavior. They started building in one box, but after only one day a HOSP pair decided to take over the box, so the bluebirds moved to the other box. Then an even stranger thing happened. After two days, (and NO nest building) the HOSP pair just decided to leave! I have never seen this happen before, and I don't know why they moved on. (Maybe they could read my mind that a trap was in their future??) But I think this is the reason the bluebirds are building in both boxes - to try to control the territory. It will be interesting to see which box they choose.
