Sparrow Spooker on BB nest

Hi all. We had a couple build a nest and lay an egg. We put the sparrow spooker on and she never went back in. It was a low of 30 last night. Took the sparrow spooker off. They are on the back fence but not going in the box. My question is should we take the nest and egg out? Thanks for any help!

Hi- if she just layed one egg, she isn't done yet. What we normally do is put the sparrow spooker up after the first egg, but with only one streamer. Or with no streamers if it's windy. Each day add another streamer. This helps them get used to it. Don't remove the nest or egg! Let her get used to it and it'll be ok. Good luck!

HOSP love white feathers. Perhaps you could put a few white craft feathers into the box that the HOSP seems interested in, then set the VanErt. Also, make sure to check it often in case one of the Blues does decide to enter that box. Since it is winter, the HOSP may be using that box as a night roost. What has worked for me is to set the VanErt trap before dark, and I've usually caught him by morning. I think I would move the mealworm feeder further away from the nest boxes so the Blues will get used to its new location by spring. My mealworm feeder is probably at least 300 feet from the nest boxes out back, and the Blues have no trouble accessing it when nesting time comes.

If the HOSP has been nestbuilding, they probably have sent the bluebirds elsewhere. Just be glad the bluebirds have escaped with their lives. HOSP can kill. Visit the link below for ideas and hints if you want to discourage or remove HOSP. Other bluebirds might move in later, if you can control the HOSP problem. If your HOSP problem is severe (too many), or you are not willing to control them, maybe you could host a smaller species (chickadees, wrens, etc.) by reducing the entrance hole so that HOSP cannot enter. I have another box that is empty and one more that has tres. in it. The female blue is building so fast, I think she will have her nest done today. I put a spooker in the tres box because I had a male hosp. trapped in another box and I can't get him out myself...I have to have my husband help me. The damn female hosp. found a new mate in 10 minutes and went after the tres. nest box so I HAD to put a spooker up. It kept the sparrows away. When my husband got home I took care of the hosp and now there is an empty box. I think the dang wrens are after that box. The blues booted them from the one they have now. I don't care if the hosp. and wrens fight over a box. Hopefully she will lay an egg soon so I can get the spooker up.

I don't have a lot of experience with the monofilament line. You should register at bluebird nut cafe and post there as well, it is a little more active than this forum. Hi guys. I'm not sure what to do now. After putting the sparrow spooker up, there are no new eggs for 2 days. I took the sparrow spooker off. They are still hanging around, tho. My question is - Should I take out the egg and remove the nest? Thanks so much. I'm just not sure what to do now =(

If it were me, I wouldn't clean the box yet since they're still there. They haven't given up on it. Maybe someone else will respond with their experience. Have you looked at www.sialis.org ? There is a whole section on sparrow spookers there. it's worth a look.

I also advise not to clean out the box. It is illegal to remove eggs and nesting material btw. Are the sparrows still around? Maybe they are harassing the EABL pair and causing her to delay laying. This could also be the females first nest and she isnt playing by the rules. The weather can also delay egg laying if it is cold. Keep an eye on the situation the next few days an hopefully she continues to lay. You could pair another box to keep the HOSP distracted until she finishes laying. Once she has finished laying and starts incubating, I would put the sparrow spooker back on. Good luck and keep us posted!
