Bird sound

One day last week a friend of mine and myself who have lived on Cape Cod most of our lives heard a bird calling that we could not see and it sounded like it was saying "thank you" over and over again repeatedly. The calling went on for over five minutes and it was very distinct. Does anyone know what bird might have this type of vocal calls? Thank you

Ill take a stab at it. Try Black Capped Chickadee. They do have a call that is 2 notes first one higher than the next. They also have a much larger vocabulary of chickade de de des and such but the 2 note call really does sound like a kind of sing song "thank you" and they do repeat it over and over. They should answer you if you whistle it back.

Kendra, that was my thought too, I mean I know they are around, they just don't come out of the woods (unless they are disturbed). These birds sound like they are right up in the trees next to my boxes. I look and look with my binocs but never see anything that even comes close to looking like a HOWR. (I do put up Wren guards). I just think it's odd that if they are out in the open like that, that they are not filling my boxes. Whatbird.com has the recorded call, also does not have a "similar" listed. Going on 8 years and only the one year did I ever have HOWR but I hear this call every year. HHUUUMMM scratching head....

The Towhees around here-East Tennessee-certainly sing the "Drink" part of their song, also the "Tea" part-sometimes written as towhee. This am I heard "Drink, drink, drink....long pause...your tea" Then just "drink drink..." I think it's a little later in the year when I hear the "tea" or "towhee" part alone. Right now I have an Eastern Wood Peewee that repeats "pee-oh-wee" over & over & it's kinda mournful sounding. He sings from a cedar tree in a small cemetary across the road & it seems fitting somehow. Susan

I'm in west, central FL. I'm listening to a pair (it is April ), one says, "what, what, what ", the reply is "thank you, thank you, thank you ".

Wow, this post asking about hearing a bird that sounds very distincly saying "thank you" is the first time that I have come across anyone else that has heard it. For over four years now I have recorded that bird at my home in Yarmouthport and no one that I have taken it to seems to know what bird is making that sound but everyone agrees that it sounds exactly like "thank you". As hard as I have tried I cannot see it, it cannot get a good look because it always stays on the very tops of large trees and it always comes from the same direction passing thru daily. The only other time that I have heard this bird once when I was shingling a house that was no more than 1/4 mile from my house, and it works its way towards my house, that home owner that day said that they have heard it also and they tried to see it but they could not either. This bird usually shows up about the end of April here and comes by just about every morning thru June. The one thing that I would like to mention that strikes me is that this birds voice is as distinct saying "thank you" as a quails sounding its "bobwhite" call. I have taken it to all the bird stores and once a person who belonged to the Audobon Society took my recorder for a month and came back saying that she and her friends drew a blank trying to identify it. So the mystery goes on. I really wish that I could get a photo or a glimpse of it because I carve birds and things that bring back good memories, and this on would bring good memories. If anyone wants to hear it please contact me.
