First egg!!

Hi all,

After 13 days of nest building, Mama Blue finally laid an egg this morning. One of the strange things, though, is that she's been back 4 times since then! I thought they didn't come back to the box on the day of egg laying? She doesn't stay long but still... It's kinda chilly here, between 55 deg and 65 def F. Could that have anything to do with it? Once before she left, she put a feather and some kind of filmy material over the egg.

Congrats on the egg Linda! I have to LOL at the thought of 55 to 60 being chilly though. When it gets up to 55 or 60 (which it has for only a few days so far this year) around WI in the Springtime we take off jackets and think it is soooo nice outside! Like I said we had a few days of that nice weather and the Blues returned then it went back down to the 30s with and occasional 40 thrown in, I haven't seen the Blues since either. But the sun is out today and it is supposed to be in the low 40's today through Saturday.

As far as mom returning after laying an egg, my momma blue did that last year all the time. She never left the nestbox area for long and would always go in and check things out.

Congrats spaceman, I was getting sick of waiting so I went to a lake with a waystation and plucked a few Saturday. But our patch was finally discovered Sunday June 5. I haven't looked closely yet but saw 3 eggs from a quick glance. Most of our common is 3 feet tall and already has the green buds. They love to lay the eggs on those because the cats can easily hide inside. I can't go too crazy raising monarchs this year because two extra sections of garden take up a lot of time. For a brief moment, I am finally caught up on WEEDING....Yeah!

Congratulations and Happy Mother's Day! You indeed got a wonderful gift. The blues are fairly tolerant of humans, but I didn't monitor mine this year as often as last year. Mama blue will usually lay one egg per day until the clutch is complete, normally in the morning. It's best to check the box mid-day, not early or past 5pm or so. After they hatch, never check the box after day 12 or 13 to prevent premature fledging. Good luck and I hope everything goes well! Donna
