Spring Bird Photos?

Hi all,

Yes it's not quite Spring yet I know... But we see our birds pairing up, and hear their Spring songs more each day. And we even see a few buds showing up on our trees where they perch. So, here we share a few recent shots which show at least the anticipation of Spring, and another new nesting season about to begin...

These are wonderful pics, I really enjoyed seeing them. I see all those birds here except the Nuthatch and Bluebird, and I would really like to see one! I am in the DFW area of north Texas, the nuthatches are in the area but I haven't been lucky enough to see one yet.

I think the chickadees, titmice and downies have had a bumper crop this year! I've never seen (or heard) so many dee-dee-dee's before, it's so fun! So far I've only seen one young red-bellied but they maybe only bringing one at a time to the feeder. And just one young cardinal - which really is not a bad thing, I can only imagine what it will be like if all 70 cardinals from last winter bring all there babies to the feeders - I'll have to take out a loan for birdseed. I've also seen house wren, phoebe and catbird fledglings. This evening I was following a spread-wing damselfly through the woods and I heard a bobwhite! We haven't had any in several years so I was really thrilled to hear it. I thought about trying to track it down but the mosquitos were eating me up alive! And the buck was stomping and snorting at me since I was standing in his bed :^)

Thanks for those comments. Sorry for not responding earlier. I have the Nikon D40 with the 18 - 200mm VR lens. Thank goodness for the VR lens as I have very unsteady hands and photos without it wouldn't be much to look at. pazfam

I think what you need are alligator clips. I don't know where my last package of them is at the moment but you get either 2 or 4 I think for 98 cents. They are about 2-3 in. long by about 1/4 in wide & we made bracelet buddy's like a pen that you hold with 1 hand & then put bracelet in other with ring in the clip & you slip clasp over ring that is being held so you can do it yourself. You can get them at "Harbor Freight" or probably hardware store, Home Depot or Lowe's I think. Sounds like cute project. Show us when you get some done. Jan

How SWEET to be able to call wild birds to a meal! A sure-fire photo op there! Whatis123, that's what I want to hear - Spring has arrived for you! Going on through the stages of Spring, I'm still waiting for the House Wrens to arrive. There's a Wren house outside my bathroom window that got knocked off it's base and I've yet to repair it. I need to get on that! And am still looking for Baltimore Orioles and RT Hummingbirds. I have oranges in place and the most popular hummer feeder ready and waiting.

Thanks, Kenn. I've noticed our birds pairing up too. Yesterday, a bluebird pair checked out our bluebird house. But I can't tell if it's the same pair who raised two broods in it last year. The tufted titmouse pic is priceless!! Love the warbler too -- apt name for it, huh?

Do you ever get hawks scaring away your feathered friends? If so what do you do about them? This is the problem I am having and have had this winter.

Hi Kenn! Wonderful photos, as always. Like you, I am seeing the birds pair up in my North Georgia yard. I have male Robins establishing territory, and I have 3 Mockers in the yard. There is so much squabbling, that I can only assume that there are 2 males trying for the same female. Crazy Mockingbirds! They are a blast to watch. My Chickadees, Cardinals, and Titmice are in pairs now too.~~Angie

We're always filled with anticipation as nesting season approaches, and we love to share our birds :)

Kris- Yes we have hawks quite often here. We don't always see them, but we know when our birds do. So far we've been pretty lucky that they usually take a House Sparrow or Starlling rather than our beloved native songbirds. But we did lose one Titmouse to a Cooper last year. Not sure there's much to do about them... they are majestic creatures which share the habitat with all the other birds... and they must eat. We do always fear for our favorites of course, but we love the hawks too, and try to photograph them when we can.

I'm 60, and I haven't seen a bluebird in my lifetime. Your pictures give me hope.
