Just wanted to share a pic my wife managed to snap before the owl flew away. This looks like the forum to do it.

That's a cool find over the back deck. These guys never get old. What neat creatures we share this world with.

Yes, it was a nice surprise; I'm glad DW was quick with the camera. I think it was humoring us, because every time I try to get a pic of the blue heron that checks out our pond, it's much too fast for me. : )

I really like my Night Owl. It is still small, but putting out growth steadily. I guess I would have to say it seems a little slower than other first-year bare root climbers. But that's ok. And to be honest, its in a less-than-ideal spot, maybe a little more shade than it would like. It is very healthy, so far no sign at all of BS in my no-spray garden. It has had two flushes of bloom so far. Both gorgeous! The color is very variable for me, I guess depending on temperature, but always very beautiful, in the wine/purple/magenta-red range. I think its going to be a winner!

It really was quite a wild afternoon. Isn't he adorable. He was only about eight inches long, which is apparently normal for them. And I loved how angry he looked _ like how dare you take a picture of me while I'm trying to figure out how to get out of your house? Meanwhile, as much as the pets added to the problems, I don't think any of them noticed the rather big bird flying around the house. I guess all my pets are focused on lizards and mice and other floor-dwelling critters.

Long-eared ... Great horned owls have a wider face disk and less cinnamon color on them. That "wide-eyed" surprised look is typical of long-eared owls. Comparison pic:

GardenGal, Same here on the owls - hear them often but never see them. Usually in the wee hours of the morning when I would take our dog(s) out (both are now gone since with the last one May 1 this year). Once in a while I will hear them in the middle of the day which is rare. Your furry boy goes out to wash his body before bedtime? Wow, your wife is so fast to take a pic of this owl. she's lucky it did not fly before she can grab a camera. I think the owl was waiting for your wife to take a pic of him/her. ha ha ha...Kidding aside, this is such a cool pic. Thank you for sharing this to us.
