Love your shots! Gotta love those little Redpolls, they have been here for about 2-3 weeks now. Crazy little things that fly off all of a sudden in unicent and then fly right back again. We have a flock of 30-100 at times. So far during the bird count I have only counted 50 at one time though, the previous week I counted 99. Do you go outside when you count? I have just done it from my back windows of the house with the binoculars. On Saturday a Sharp Shinned hawk tried to get some of the Redpolls but luckily for them he missed. The most species I have gotten this year has been 10, Friday was the best day so far even saw two Pine Siskins among the Redpolls and on Sunday saw a Cedar Waxwing, never saw them this early before. Strangely enough I think the Red Bellied Woodpecker, the White Breasted Nuthatches and the American Tree Sparrow that have been regulars here have been hiding during this bird count, I think someone tipped them off. LOL!

I just figured out the dearth of birds in my yard---for today at least! Just went out to cover my WS stuff and tuck it back into its corner, and then took a walk around the yard to pet some of my spring bulbs and toasted perennials, and, lo and behold: a pile of feathers! Not sure how I missed it, but at some point today a hawk or falcon came for a visit---and a meal! I even found a foot with a bloody leg attached where it had been ripped off of the body! It was a house finch that "it" got, but I really wonder what IT was! Apparently even if I didn't see it, the birds did! Overall I had a very "slow" day. Never saw more than one robin at a time, but I did see both the male and female hairy woodpeckers, and I did see ONE goldfinch! Really hoping for better luck tomorrow---for me AND the birds! Bonnie, when I first moved up to this end of town 120th was the "end" of the city, and it was wild and wooly up here with big old cottonwoods over the fields of prairie dogs along 120th. At the time I was working at the garden center in Westminster where I was before Paulino's, and I took 120th all the way down to Federal, and then Federal south to 92nd. It was common for me to count a dozen bald eagles along the way between home and work! WAY cool! Now, of course, it's all citified and there are no more big, old trees or empty fields---and no more eagles! I'm guessin' they've all moved over to Rocky Mountain Arsenal! The Birds! The Birds! Hi Claire and Jud, Yeah, you both are right about the redpolls being around a lot- been having a flock of about 20 come by frequently everyday. I have to give an update now because I've uploaded some videos on youtube since the last time I posted here. Can you believe I'm having problems once again now with this Sony camera. Like the other two cameras, the focus has issues, it wants to work when it wants to. So a couple of weeks ago, I move my ceramic hanging bird with bird nest to another hook on my front porch. When I did, I though "I wonder if a real bird would ever use this to make it's nest". Then yesterday, I noticed that indeed a bird had thought of that! I could see bits of the real nest poking out over the top of the fake nest!! I haven't see a bird inside of it yet, so don't know whether it abandoned the idea or will be back. It's not the most quiet spot as it's right by the front door. I thought I'd move the hook so it's a little farther into the corner so if mama bird does lay her eggs there, she won't be as disturbed. But how cute that my passing thought turned out to come true :) Marj

Lovely photos Konrad,

We never see the Redpolls here. Really enjoy seeing such good shots of them. And btw, that 3rd frame needs to be seen rotated 90ccw. It's a great photo. :)

I mostly feed birds about 7 miles away from home on my hobby farm, here in town I have a upside down feeder and suet to keep sparrows away...so then there is not much activity and I don't count.
You're so right about this behaviour on Redpolls...you sure have allot of them, and species!...What is your climate zone? Perhaps you can fill it in your member page?

Not sure what happened with the picture turned 90 degree.
It was all OK when posted, and yes, it's turned in photobucket too, when clicking on, it will turn back to normal and when editing and replace old one all looks fine but when clicking back to thumbnail it's turned 90 again.
I might delete it and post a new one.
Did this ever happen to you?

Hey Konrad, I tried to edit my Page but for some reason it isn't saving any of the info, not sure if I am doing something wrong or not. Anyway, I am in WI, in zone 4. Our regulars during the Winter months are Chickadees, Blue Jays, Goldfinch, House Finch, Cardinals, Hairy & Downey Woodpeckers, Juncos and Mourning Doves. This year the Redpolls are staying for awhile on their way up north, normally we only see them for a couple days. Also the RedBellied Woodpecker who we normally only see in the Summer has stuck around. Once Spring/Summer gets here we will have many more species around.

I'm using Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XSi with 200mm lens and 2 X extender, this makes it 400mm, chickadee
is shot at 400mm.

For some reason the 3rd. picture fixed itself again, right side up ....magic somewhere LOL
