The wrens have moved on

Hi, all. I guess the tape covering the hole worked. I removed it after one day, and now my BBs have a nest in the box! I will try and keep the wrens busy by checking and removing any sticks. As I said, the wrens had not started building in the box, just gaurding it like they were ready. Thanks, all!

Do you know what wren guards are? I have had SO many problems with house wrens in past years. You might consider putting one on the box when the bluebirds have laid their first egg.

My experience is that the wrens don't seem to bother empty nests (although I know that they do). They wait till there are eggs or young chicks. I've had them peck eggs and throw them out of the nest box.

The worst things I've had the house wrens do, though, is throw just-hatched chicks out of nest boxes. I've had them do that with baby bluebirds and last year just-hatched chickadees. With the bluebirds, I caught them in the act (nest box cam) and returned all chicks to the box. However, the next day they did it again! I was able to return the chicks to the box. Last year I was only able to find 5 of the 6 chickadees (I didn't know there was a chickadee nest or I would have put a guard on it). I returned those to the box and put on a wren guard and they survived.

Now I always put a wren guard on the box when the first egg is laid. You can find out more about this at

As soon as the first egg has been laid, I put up a Sparrow Spooker. (Homemade from Mylar) Then I make my own wren gaurd so the wrens cannot see the hole to the Box. I need to go check the box, as I feel the first egg may be there today! I love you all!

Digger, that's so sweet that you let them continue to build their nests in your garage. I so enjoy watching baby birds grow up. (Speaking of which, have you guys been watching the Decorah eagles?? WOW!) I have a pair of beautiful little birds, maybe a species of sparrow, that have built a nest under my porch, over a window. They're gorgeous - dark navy feathers on their heads and back and an orangish yellow breast. They're making a horrible mess with all the bird poop, but watching them is worth a cleanup day when they're done. GG, I'm with you. I am still new at this whole protecting our bb houses, I have learned the hard way twice and now IM coming here for some great advice, which I am getting and you will also. I thought someone told me that if you clean the bb nest out after fledging to leave it open for awhile. Mama bb will be busy with her baby's. IM not really sure but I do think this was suggested to me? If not someone will set you straight soon. Congrats on the six fledglings, that is huge!! After watching video of wrens and sparrows raiding and killing bb's IM pissed and ready to rip their little heads off. (oh my) LOL good luck.

Count me in on the "I hate them"!!!! I don't know what to tell you. EXCEPT that when I caught the HOWR throwing material out of the dee nest and realized that they throw the chicks out, too, I put on a wren guard. They had been to the box but even through they clung to the side of the guard and looked under, they have not gone in and the dees are OK. I have been wondering if the fact that I made the wren guard longer in the front, not just to cover the hole but down to the bottom of the box, made any difference? I don't know why, but it worked.
