Peterson nestbox concerns

Hi,

I have bluebirds that have built a nest in a Peterson nest box, no eggs yet. Prior to them nesting, there were starlings squeezing in my peterson boxes. I used the Van Ert traps and disposed of three of them, along with 11 sparrows.

Can i add a reducer piece of wood with 1 1/2 inch hole to the box? (without disturbing the bbs?) My concern of course is the starlings will destroy the nest.

Along the same lines, i have chickadees nesting in another box. Can i put a 1 1/8 inch reducer over that w/o disturbing them?

The boxes are built to spec, several years old now, but the starlings can squeeze into that oblong hole.

Thanks much,

Chrsvic
