They're All Gone

For the second time in 4 years, chickadees built a nest in one of my boxes near the woods. I was hoping the chickadees would vigorously defend the nest or the HOWR male would arrive late this year--in May preferably.

Well, it didn't work out. The HOWR male ended the chickadees' nest. I've documented the events with images--pre-HOWR and post-HOWR on my little blog. The entries are next to each other and I will probably add more entries before you see it. I have a link below.

Anyway, I've called it quits with bird-housing. I've had one success (2008) and one failure (2010). In 2009, the chickadees raised a family just inside the woods. The parents brought the fledgelings to the front of the woods and I was able to enjoy them. Nature can do a better job than me. Plus, the HOWRs will have the opportunity to nest in the woods where red-bellied woodpeckers, and others, have no qualms about raiding a HOWR nest.
