Saw this great blue heron walking across my backyard last summer.

Just checked out your Feral Forest Facebook page. Wonderful photos and very informative. I will go back and look at all your albums. Keep up the good work.

As to GBH, fantastic bird! Love these! I see one occasionally on my 1.6 acre rural property near my creek (obviously) but have never had the camera with me at the time.

I did catch one on film a few years ago sitting atop my neighbour's shed. Absolutely stunning creatures!

When in Florida, walking along the beach, they are so used to people, I could walk right up to it - about 5 feet away to take pics. Love these majestic birds!

I too had to go with a net after losing two koi.. the floating aligator didnt work for me.. anyone know where I can get a clear net?? I would like to swap the black one out for clear as I think it would look better.. I hate having to net the pond at all but I dont like losing koi either.. I checked pondnets.com and they look to only have black and their nets are a bit pricey too..

The great thing about the Scarecrow is that it requires a heat signature as well as movement which is why slow moving predators get zapped as well as the faster ones and wind blown grasses and waterfalls won't set it off. I did discover that the highest splash from it is light enough that small birds love to set it off. A group of them will sit in the tall Marissi Viburnum until one flies low enough to trigger the spray then they all have fun in the shower. It attracts the squirrels and chippers, too but they aren't smart enough to set it off, so they come running when they see the birds flock. They did figure out the outside reach of the spray after getting knocked head over heels a few times. I have caught myself a few times and once or twice a group of teens trying to find a shortcut to the high school, and also, a couple of landscapers were caught by the spray. Not only does it keep away the predators, it is great entertainment. The only resistant critters are the large dogs that sometimes get out of their yards. Great Blue Herons make me think what it must have been like to have a pteradactyl fly overhead during prehistoric times. It is always a thrill to see them. Here, they fly from the nearby lake to the many reservoir ponds in our area, and are commonly seen early morning & at dusk. I recently had the extra treat of seeing 2 males solving a disagreement by having a flying, swooping chase thru the neighborhood. Incidently, the sound made by a Great Blue Heron resembles a "bark" more so than a "honk"

One thinks of a heron as a slow, deliberate stalker...if this was a crow chick, I wonder if it was still in the nest or maybe out on a limb or even on the ground. If the move was made on a chick still in the nest high in a tree this would totally rewrite the way I think of herons going about getting their meals. As many pairs of crow eyes as there are back there, this was one bold heron thanks for the link...I'm on dial-up so YT is a pain for us, but I will set it up late one night and let it download this one.

Oh wow.........great pics both of you!

I have a large creek that runs through my property and occasionally they look for fish there.

I was walking back to the house last summer after closing up my chickens, and there, sitting on our TV antenna was a GBH! Didn't have my camera, but wow........

Oh.....and I have a little watergarden in my back yard. One time I came home from shopping and one was perched on the house, looking down at the watergarden. I don't have fish.....but do have frogs and snakes. It's always hard to know who to root for!

My Feral Forest site is all for fun. My current hobby is wild plant photography and identification, even though I'm not very good at it yet.

Marc......are you posting any of those plant pics on another forum here? I'd love to see them. Ever since we got an electric raised golf cart, I have delighted in finding new wild plants.
One of the biggest surprises was several big stands of wild ginger. .......oh, and casmassia.

I had planted a jack-in-the-pulpit something like 20 years ago. I thought it had never grown. Last summer, I went to plant another one, and something caught my eye.........it was a 2' tall jack-in-the-pulpit! I was so excited I almost burst!

I'm never going to tire of exploring and appreciating nature!
