4 baby blues hatched 3/18/2011

5 Eggs laid but only 4 hatched. Babies are growing and doing well. The blues are about 1 week ahead of last year's schedule here in SE Texas.

I have a question about my eggs if you can help. It is going on day 22 for these eggs. Mama blue is sitting pretty on the nest with these eggs. Papa blue comes and checks in on her. How long do I continue to let her sit on them? I can't just go and take this nest away from her. I keep waiting on her to leave the nest. I no the sooner she leaves and I am able to clean it out, she will start rebuilding again. I am totally confused on what to do. Hope someone can give me some help here.

You know, it was not expensive in money OR time to do this, it was pretty darned simple. :) DH got a PS EyeToy color camera for $5.00 at Gamestop, and YahooLive is the host for the cam, sound and chat, at no cost to us. My husband had the know-how to get things going, but you can find out online and it isn't difficult or complicated. The number of people viewing the cam and talking in chat crashes my husband's computer sometimes, but we just restart things and everything's fine. We wanted to hatch chicks anyway, so thought we'd share the experience. The cam just pointed through the viewing panes in the lid of the incubator, now we set it inside the brooder box. Baby chicks DO have a wonderful effect on all who gaze upon them, it's like Valium for your eyes. *L* And yeah, it is VERY remarkable that Chicken Sister has babies this late in life--but then, both of the boys LOVE her to distraction, you should have seen them run over and burble over her when we brought her back from the vet after her egg-binding adventure. What a couple of love-struck chuckleheads. :) It was very sweet, they missed her so! We'll be hatching again the weekend of June 21st, and will resume chickam then, if anyone wants to watch. We will have our incubators issues solved before we start more eggs. Velvet ~:>

Spedigrees - glad to hear your dreaded nutria rat is actually a muskrat. I've seen muskrats and otters in my pond. I know there has been some beaver activity - evidenced by the downed trees - but I have yet to actually see a beaver. I *think* I actually saw a groundhog the other day. We had one living in our brush pile last summer - he destroyed my gardens. So I'm hoping he found somewhere new to live this year.

Ok, that is good! I remember now. You can take it off after the blues are 7 days old but you can leave it up a bit longer if you would like. I would have it off by day 10 though. I have a wren guard on my Blues nest this year as they chose a box more in the wren territory (don't have a wren but they can show up at any time) and I wanted to be safe about it. I did it in steps...first just the front, then a short side, then a longer side...she accepted it no problem and laid six beautiful blue eggs... a first for me, never had six before, always 4 or 5. Did a count later today and there are 4 babies. Mom did not eat the meal worms I put out today. Weather has gone to not being so hot and so I guess she is happy with the bugs that she can get on her own. She and Dad were busy at the nest site and I saw several other blues in the area (not sure if they are their young but they seems to tolerate them being around, so I am guessing that they are.)

Well, you will get very differing views on this issue Indigo. I once had this same thing to happen, and a lot of people advised me to continue to wait for the eggs to hatch, especially if there had been a cold spell to come in after the eggs were laid. Finally though, after an extended wait, it became apparant to me that they were not going to hatch. I went out to the box, gently retrieved one of the eggs (used a plastic spoon) and placed it into a soft container. I went inside and took the egg into a dark closet. I shined my flashlight into the egg. There was clearly no embryo whatsoever. So, I removed that batch of eggs and the nest. The Blues rebuilt, relaid, and successfully hatched a brood. Some people advise leaving the original nest, but my experience has been that the moms always seem to want to build a new nest before they lay again. In my mind and experience, they just seem to be hardwired to do that. Now, this was just my experience and my decison. I am not advising you to do the same.~~Angie

Indigo, I agree with Angie on this situation. Fertile eggs would have hatched by now.
