4 baby blues hatched 3/18/2011

5 Eggs laid but only 4 hatched. Babies are growing and doing well. The blues are about 1 week ahead of last year's schedule here in SE Texas.

I have a question about my eggs if you can help. It is going on day 22 for these eggs. Mama blue is sitting pretty on the nest with these eggs. Papa blue comes and checks in on her. How long do I continue to let her sit on them? I can't just go and take this nest away from her. I keep waiting on her to leave the nest. I no the sooner she leaves and I am able to clean it out, she will start rebuilding again. I am totally confused on what to do. Hope someone can give me some help here.
Thanks for any advice.

^^^ Hahaha...I once had to buy eggs at the market while my girls were molting, I brought them home and made a point to show the eggs to the girls to remind them what they looked like. Laying started up again shortly thereafter. :) Well...we checked both incubators and candled the eggs we could see into last night. A lot of them were clear, especially the Polish eggs. :( But I don't see my Polish ladies getting much action from my roos, the dumb boys! Other eggs have chicks, but I could not tell if they were alive or not, and how fully formed they are. No peeping or activity yet from any of the eggs, but they aren't due to hatch until beginning at 8PM Saturday night. If none of these hatch, I don't know what to think...I know that both of my roo boys are getting their job done and I don't think they have fertility issues, they are healthy fellas. We did change locations for the incubators this year, to my dining room table, in a corner of a room away from windows and doors to help protect from drafts. I THOUGHT I had a great spot, but if this batch doesn't work I'm going back to putting the darned things in the kitchen. :( On top of everything else, we are having weird weather here since yesterday, supposed to continue until Tuesday--wind, rain/hail, and tornadoes, of all things! If the power goes out, I have my broody hen contingency plan...Bear, Splash and Blue are all broody and would get to sit on the eggs. :) We checked the cam last night and have it all set up and ready to go, if hatching begins we'll fire it up and I'll notify everyone. Congrats, and break out the candy cigars! Sometimes they remove unhatched eggs, sometimes not. I like to wait at least 3 extra days to see if it will hatch, but after that, a nestling would be so far behind the others, it would not likely be able to compete and would not survive anyway. You don't have to remove unhatched eggs, but usually I do. They are SO fragile, though, it must be done very carefully. You don't want to crush it and soil the nest, which would surely attract ants and other problems. You can use a spoon; I have a nice plastic one that came with MiracleGro that has 2 ends, one end is very deep and holds the egg nicely so it won't roll out. BlueBars

Tortellini Soup INGREDIENTS 2 pounds crosscut flanken short ribs, cut into single rib portions 3 beef bouillon cubes 1 small onion, diced 1Ã¢ÂÂ1/2 cups 'baby' carrots, sliced into circles 3 stalks celery, diced 3 pressed cloves garlic 1 medium Idaho potato, peeled and diced 2 vineripe tomatoes, diced Black pepper 1 9 ounce package refrigerated prepared cheese tortellini or 2 heaping cups) 2 Tablespoons parsley, chopped Grated pecorino for serving PREPARATION: Place the meat in a deep pot and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil, then simmer until meat is tender, skimming impurities from the top as needed. Pull the meat out and set aside until cool enough to handle. When cool enough, remove from bones and cut or pull apart into bitesized pieces. Build the soup in the remaining beef liquid. 2.Add 2 or 3 cups of water to the beef broth and bring to a simmer. Add 3 bouillon cubes to the soup. Add the reserved meat, onion, carrots, celery, garlic, potato, tomato, and some grindings of pepper. Simmer until all is tender, about 45 minutes. Add the tortellini and cook until done per package instructions. Stir in parsley. Serve topped with grated cheese. Found this recipe on a new cooking show TLC channel...the chef is the Cake Boss...I love his recipes....he cooks like my mother.....I made this soup on Monday. "I am looking for one specific fabric color and when I find it, I'll be off and running again" You know, that stopped me dead on a project I was going to do about three years ago. I sprung for some very expensive authentic Japanese material, and started gathering the complimenting material with which to make the blocks. I got the black, I got the red, and I had decided to use teal as the last and I could NOT find a true and appropriate teal blue. I got a teal green and it just does not do it for me. Have since used the black, red and teal green in other projects, lol. Still have the big cut of the Japanese print sitting in my stash waiting to be done. Had forgotten how I never could find a good partner for teal in my wardrobe. You'd have thought I would learn my lesson then. But it's funny how you look for the perfect material and will know when you find it. Sort of a sixth sense.

Well, you will get very differing views on this issue Indigo. I once had this same thing to happen, and a lot of people advised me to continue to wait for the eggs to hatch, especially if there had been a cold spell to come in after the eggs were laid. Finally though, after an extended wait, it became apparant to me that they were not going to hatch. I went out to the box, gently retrieved one of the eggs (used a plastic spoon) and placed it into a soft container. I went inside and took the egg into a dark closet. I shined my flashlight into the egg. There was clearly no embryo whatsoever. So, I removed that batch of eggs and the nest. The Blues rebuilt, relaid, and successfully hatched a brood. Some people advise leaving the original nest, but my experience has been that the moms always seem to want to build a new nest before they lay again. In my mind and experience, they just seem to be hardwired to do that. Now, this was just my experience and my decison. I am not advising you to do the same.~~Angie
