Dead bird........what kind? :(

I looked out my back door and saw this poor dead bird off the deck, in the snow. It looked like maybe a cardinal. How did it die? .......hit a window? a predator? old age? I felt really bad. I went out to move it and the closer I got, I really couldn't figure out what kind of bird it was. I stood there for a minute, trying to think what bird could it be???
Then it hit me...........It was my well cover sticking out of the snow! Hahahahahaha I was so relieved! But I did feel a little silly!

Oh my God I felt bad reading the subject line but had to see --- at first thought I said to myself it looks like a duck, poor thing. I'm relieved and still giggling! It's odd what the brain sees when you have a preconceived idea about something, isn't it? I totally saw a bird head!!! That's so funny!!

Haha Hostanista..........I didn't even look at it the way you did! I was seeing the head on the right, and the tail at the far left, with the body inbetween! Like it was laying face down. haha It does look like a duck's head! hahaha

James, I have no issues with the heat because they grow inside my house. I never put them outside, even for a couple of minutes. I grow them in a spare room that has a large window that gets early morning sun. I also have them under cheap grow lights that clip onto something that's near the plants. The grow lights take an ordinary grow bulb or you can use those long square grow light bulbs. Either type will work and the total cost is really cheap. Ever since I found out about the water my plants are growing fast. I use only organic fert. since the other types of fert. can burn the roots. The organic can not burn the roots. A guy that I purchase miltoniopsis plants from told me that since most tap water is purified to get rid of bacteria and other things most tap water contains chlorine and chorline burns the delicate roots. I never thought about this before and since I found out about chlorine being in most tap water, this makes sense plus you can smell the faint odor of chlorine in the tap water. I can't tolerate the heat so I stay inside and I set my thermostat at 70 degrees. If I'm happy with the temps. the plants are probably happy too. I almost forgot one important issue. I have a humidifier working 24 hours. It's a real cheap humidifier that I purchased off of Etsy. The humidifier looks like a fat white stick. I stick it in an old plastic water jug and you can see the mist coming out. Apparently it works real well. I can't tell you the brand because it came in a company box and everything is in Chinese including the instructions. I think that the humidifier cost me around five bucks. My set up is cheap but I haven't killed any plants. I currently have about seven plants putting out spikes. I have about twenty plants and I don't want anymore. I'll probably get another one only if the flower color appeals to me or if it's a cross that I don't have.

I keep thinking of all those ladies who like to wear bright sunny dresses for Easter Sunday. It's not going to be quite the same this year, even if it is going to warm up a bit (and rain) for the weekend. 27F out there this morning, and we're well past the average last freeze date and nearing the average last frost date (next Tuesday). And yet it's been such a mild winter overall; I know I didn't drop below 20F here the entire season. But spring marches on. Warm weather will get here eventually. I hope! The long term forecast suggests above normal temperatures for April, so I guess the NAO is heading back where it belongs.

I just managed to get some more close ups pics of her ( have added them to my blog http://mywisconsingarden.blogspot.com/) . I am so excited this is the first time I have had a hummingbird in the garden, and coming from the UK the first time I have seen them. I could sit and watch them all day, but it is a little hot out at the moment!

Doesn't look like an ovenbird as it doesn't have the central well-defined orangish head stripe. Not sure a Hermit Thrush as the tail is not distinctly rusty and different from the back feathers, though hard to tell in the photo for sure. By the size of the breast spots being round and quite defined, I am inclined to say Wood Thrush as well. BN

I had to laugh as well. I've done the same thing. One day I went out to see what was going on with a large bird perched in a tree branch, but not taking wing for hours. It was a paulownia leaf, lodged in a crabapple tree and fluttering in the breeze. On another day, I went out to investigate what looked like a dove, standing in the shallow edge of our pond, not moving. It was a smooth rock what had fallen into the water.

Yes.....I can see that too! haha

This morning while I was out in the chicken coop, I looked out the window and swore I was seeing a bobwhite, resting on the ground by the fence. It never moved. It ended up being leaves! haha I guess I'm not hard to fool!

Ha! I thought it was a cardinal too! There was a dead snag in a tree top on my regular walk & I have thought it was an owl many times. I mean I know that it's there but I still check. Finally the snag blew down & it no longer looks like an owl. I kinda miss it!
