Bird ID please

This is the first bird to my new feeder. It is blury but hopefully someone can ID it for me. Blue, yellow and red; very pretty. He is fluffed up 'cause it's cold even in Southeast Florida.

My guess would be a painted bunting! I'm jealous - all my years in FL I never saw one.

Molly, I bet you have more kinds of birds than you realize, too.. When I had knee replacement surgery in late August three years ago I spent a lot of time in a recliner that faced the bird bath, I kept noticing unusual (for me) birds visiting so I kept binoculars and a bird ID book close by. I was very surprised at the number of various bird species migrating through that I had never noticed before.

Really,... I was a member of the model air plane club in Lethbridge, we had a field to fly on the west side, [University] that wind surely made it difficult at times. Going skying to Fernie or Kimberly on the Crowsnest Highway I have fond memories seeing the HUGE nest in town, not sure anymore which town. At times it was above 0 degree in the hills, going back to Lethbridge it would still be in the deep freeze!

I checked more pictures on the sialis site and I found a picture of a female HOSP with pinkish feet. I believe you are correct, TMFF, that this is indeed a HOSP. The beak and feet threw me off. I guess this female just has very bright feet and as you say, an exaggerated top beak. Thank you for your reply.

Glad your mystery was solved Jane! I don't see too many mockingbirds and didn't realize their beaks look like that. Just in case you don't know this.......many times they chatter in the middle of the night! Its so weird to hear a bird talking so much in the darkness! One time I came home from work around 1:30 a.m. and it was totally dark and the mocker was talking up a storm! Happy Birding!

Painted Bunting, I should have remembered that! I used to see them in Virginia years ago. I didn't know they came down this far. Thank you for the IDs.

Hmm they must be following you! When I lived in FL I never saw any and now I live in VA and have seen none.

You ARE lucky !! I, too, live in VA (on the Chesapeake Bay) and I've never seen one. Although, a few years back my fiance was all excited, telling me he saw this beautiful small bird sort of colored like a parrot. We looked him up and the painted bunting was what we found. Lucky him !! We never saw him again, tho.

brit5467, I lived in Mathews when I saw one in Va. I also lived in Glouchester, Yorktown, Williamsburg, Hampton, Lightfoot. I lived in Va a long time, originally from there. Anyway, he came back yesterday, morning and late afternoon. I am going to try to get a better picture to post. Thanks again everyone for the ID.

Before I even scrolled down to see the picture, I knew what it was as soon as I saw the words "blue, yellow and red." I would give my eye teeth to see a painted bunting -- it's #1 on my bird wish list. Lucky you! (We don't have them in California.)

He seems to be a regular now. Every morning and late afternoon around 4:30pm...like clock-work. The greenish and yellow bird I am also seeing I am guessing is the feemale? Either that or it is someone's escaped parakeet.lol.

Another new visitor coming to check out my feeder,

I am seeing at least 4 painted buntings now challenging each other for their spot on the feeder and some cardinals daily too. I just love seeing all the birds.
