WOW already!!!!!

Happy spring everybody. I could not believe my eyes Papa Blue is back already. They have never been this early! March in Michigan can be very cold and we can still have major snowstorms. Ok here goes the worring already! LOL I will be puting in my meal worm order tomorrow. I got them some very fat very expensive wax worms to tide them over!

Here we go again! ;D

Lisa, where in the heck have you been??? You've been MIA for quite some time!!! So happy your Papa Blue is back. Is there a Mrs. yet? My Mama blue just started building today..just a little pine straw in the box and that's enough to get me excited. Yes, Here we go again. I still depend on all you experts to guide me through this season. Happy Spring!

I am so happy for you.I live in OH.If you have them in MI in March that means I could be getting them soon.I keep my eyes open but have not seen any Bluebirds by the next boxes yet.Hope you have a good Bluebird season.

That's great, gardener! Are you going to build now or wait until spring? You know we'll be watching for regular updates. I don't plan on using it until fall. I have a 6X8 portable greenhouse that I bought to use this year already have a lot of plants growing in it. Building the greenhouse is going to be a piece of cake just takes time to get everything spread out so you can find the right pieces. Patience is required with something like this. If it don't want to go together right my shop has a cutting torch and electric welder and all kinds of metal working tools including a lathe and I have the skill to use them so if it isn't right or I think I can change it into something that I would like better then I will just do it. Not worried about the assembly just that at my age the mind is willing but the body won't cooperate. It takes me a lot longer to get things done than it did when I was much younger.

I was in West Virginia on Thursday, playing fiddle at a big old time music fest; we left Wednesday at 4:30am and got back yesterday evening around 6:30pm. I was probably having coffee! My yard was so high that I unpacked, put all the camping gear away, showered (at last-a real shower) and at 8:30pm. jumped on the Toro Zero Turn mower and off I went. I was flyin' around that yard and doin' donuts around the trees, trying to get down before it got dark, and I made it just as the sun set. Then around 11pm, I crashed in my own bed finally after sleeping in the back of a pickup truck for three nights! At least I had a cot, but have you ever tried to sleep with hundreds of musicians picking banjos and playing fiddles all around your camp site all night until 5am? Just awhile ago I mowed the back and the orchard because the temp went down to a more comfortable 83. But the WEEDS - oh my gosh. I gotta alot of work to do to make up for those four days away. Plus we are going back to 80+ temps all next week, with Tuesday suppose to be 91. Rain is forecast on some of the days but I forget which ones. So - next Thursday for sure I'll be making time for tea even if the work doesn't get done.

SouthCountyGuy, if the ground is not frozen the dahlia tubers can still be dug up and saved for next year. If they are in pots I bring the pots in to a cool dark basement room for the winter. If in the ground I dig the tubers after the foliage is killed by frost and swish them in a bucket of water to remove excess dirt then let them dry before storing in a paper bag with wood shavings in the same dark room. Your helper is by far the loveliest flower in your garden. The last two days have been spent cutting back perennials and cleaning up the garden beds. The last of the open clematis blooms succumbed to an earlier frost but one opened a fresh bloom today. I consider it a little gift to remind me that the blooms will come again. Late blooming Fireworks golden rod looks nice. Tall sedums still looking good. Some mums still have some fresh blooms nestled amongst the low foliage. An aster in a protected spot is still blooming and yesterday I saw some autumn crocus opening. Annual blue salvia 'Victoria' is still hanging in there. Pansies looking good. My potted snapdragons are blooming only because they are in a medium sized pot which I have brought inside nights. Next week even the days will be below freezing so will let them go. Brugmansia were dug up and potted in 10 inch containers. Those with buds were left in the unheated garage and have been blooming since late September. Yesterday I brought the last two into the house. Their booms are very fragrant!

First Frost is still the best looking hosta in my garden. Halcyon is next, and Color Glory. Rainforest Sunrise,Paradigm, Cathedral Windows, Stained Glass, T Rex, Guacamole, Abiqua Drinking Gourd, all still look great plus a few more. We have not had a killing frost yet tho, maybe later this week. Then we shall see who comes thru that.

Hi Donna, much has happened in the last 7-8 months I have been to Iowa 3 times. Lost my Mother and Step Dad within 13 days of each other and just went back for my Nephew's funeral last month. I also started a new job and am helping to build the company so I am working about 80 hours a week, Senior Vice President I might add ;). Thank GOD this is a work at home job so I wont miss my Blues, even better, most of what I do is on the phone so I can be outside keeping an eye on them. Anybody in here good on the phones? I have not seen a Mrs. Blue yet. It will be interesting to see if hussy mama shows up for him or if she shows up with her second mate from last year (Joe Daddy). I think I have my 5 boxes set up far enough so that I could have both pairs. Im torn between hoping that I may get 3 nesting this year and not wanting them to start so early because of the possible bad weather. They will do what they will do. The Juncos are still here so I am sure we have not seen the last snow. I swear I feel like a beginner this time every year. Janie May you puttin up your camera box this year?

Lisa, I am so sorry to hear about you mom, stepdad and nephew how heartbreaking, all in such a short amount of time. Prayers for you and your family.

How exciting on the Blues returning. I forget what part of Michigan are you in? I am in Central Wi and have had my eyes peeled lately as just this weekend we had the Robins, Red Wings, Grackles and Killdeer return. Last year I saw the first Bluebird on April 5th so it may be awhile here yet. Usually we get at least 3 more snowfalls after we see the first Robins, most times many more than that too. Oh and I am hoping that I may get more than one nesting pair on our property this year too as we have five acres and seven boxes. We could get one pair nesting in the yard and one on the back property line.

Good luck in your new job! How cool to be working at home like that!!

We have a MRS Blue this morning. YEA! I cant tell if it is Hussy Mom or not. The only way I will know for sure is if she stops feeding the babies on day 11 like she always has. Papas out there singing up a storm. Funny enough I have not see one Junco today. They usually leave right after the last snowfall....how do they know this?

Lisa, I too, am so sorry about your losses. Congrats on your new job and I hope all is going well in that dept. Glad a Mrs. has appeared for the Mr. and that they'll be making beautiful music together pretty soon!!! Things are picking up on the forum and that's exciting. Here's hoping we all have successful stories to share. And you know me...I'll have a million questions again this season!
