A New Development

For those of you who read my "Crazy Start of the Season" post, (and thanks for the responses), you know I have Dees in one box, and nuthatches that began building days ago.

Well, I haven't spotted the nuthatches in 2 days. Today, I checked the box and noticed some additional nesting material that appeared to be BBs. Lo and behold, a pair is building on top of the sparse beginning of the nuthatch nest!!! Just saw Mama blue fly in with her mouth full!

Has anyone ever had this happen? Have no clue why the nuthatches abandoned their nestbuilding so quickly! Would love to have your thoughts.

I will miss those precious ones but glad to have the blues.

Aww, that is too bad about the Nuthatches! I would assume the Blues showed up and chased them away. They are pretty small birds to be fighting with the Blues.

Hi Donna....never saw a "fight", but suspect you are right. I still have one nestbox unoccupied and in fact, the Nuthatches nested there 3 years ago. Maybe I should put up a "Vacancy" sign for them!!! LOL....haven't seen them anywhere close to this hotel, or any other potential resident.

The house itself is fine, we just have questions when it comes to things like the allowences. One thing I don't like is that we have to go through their vendors. I know I could do better on pricing the some of the things we've been quoted but we don't get that $$ back if we don't use the vendor. But getting the information is like pulling teeth. Our agent must have called/emailed their agent for a solid week before we ever get an answer. We're not the first house being built so I guess everyone else on the st has gone through teh same stuff though...

Sorry, Ken, DH finally home so didn't have time to run experiments. I will say, though, that the leaves are definitely improving, albeit slowly. I fertilized my small Hosta bed earlier this Spring....it was the first time I've ever fertilized and I'm going to do it again next week. The larger bed is more difficult because of the sheer size and hauling hose throughout while trying not to decapitate any Hostas (I just use Miracle Grow in a hose attachment). Bernd, that is a LOT of fert! You must have some HUGE gardens. Glad it's paying off.

Dar we were looking at the weather map on TV the other night, a good part of the States is much, much, hotter then the usual, I pray you all get some rain. Our June has given us a few unusually hot days but right now we are back to cooler days and rain, our typical June weather. Last summer we had days that were hotter than anything in recorded history, in over 100 years. Not knowing what to expect when I planted the Nunas you sent me I only planted 2 of the numbered varieties you sent and I have to admit it took a lot of tries to get any of the commercial variety to germinate, perseverance paid off I finally have 3 plants in a 5 gallon tub, I can add a bamboo pole for them to climb on if needed. All are planted in tubs so they could be moved to the greenhouse if needed to finish off. By the way the leaves on the commercial variety are much smaller then the other two. Once I see how they develop and grow here I'll not be such a mother hen about the whole deal :), Right now the tubs are encased in copper mesh, this is if not the slug, it certainly is the snail capital of the world. I could give Floral a run for the money on who has the most LOL. Annette

I would start with contacting the county without a lawyer. Depending on where you are, that could be plenty. I now live in an area that is obsessed with preventing runoff. That is usually enough here. If you live in an area obsessed with drought and not interfering with rivers, then you likely will need a lawyer.

Awwww....would have been nice to have both species nesting Donna. I think that my Bluebird pair has finally settled on a box, and my Carolina Chickadee pair has their nest almost done now inside a small box on my front porch. :o)

My blues house is in my backyard and I hung up last year a little bird house in my front in a Riverbirch tree, can't seem to get anything to nest in it....its just your standard birdhouse I got at Lowes should I get a hole reducer would that draw smaller birds?

Hi deedee, If no birds are showing any interest in the house, you might try moving it to a different location. Is it a house that is intended for Bluebirds, or is it like a Wren house? My Carolina Chickadees will nest in my standard Bluebird box, but it is mounted on a T-post and standing alone in the yard. Anyway, I would try moving it.~~Angie
