Checking Things Out In SE PA

I looked out back this morning and noticed a male and female blue checking out all of my bird houses. They checked each one and will probably save the information in their heads. Who knows, maybe I will join you in the annual "worry about the blues" season this Spring.

I know there will be House Wrens arriving towards the end of next month. If the Blues hurry, maybe, just maybe, this year.

We don't have House Wrens here, but I have been told by others that they can be a huge problem. I have Blues here all year long, and they have roosted in my BB box all winter. I should go out there today and check to see whether they are bringing in nesting materials. I am sorry about Ambrose. God bless.

Gorgeous photos, Bob. I hope your blues get a nesting in before the house wrens arrive and I also hope that the mid-Atlantic states are done with snow for the winter!!!
I, too, am sorry about Ambrose. I understand because I am experiencing the same pain--we lost our scottie, Sonny, this past October. He battled cancer for nearly 10 months but we couldn't stand the thought of him in pain and had to let him go. We miss him terribly.

Just want to know for my own information, and maybe others, would it be best to put the plants in pots/cups with soil and markers to swap, or perhaps just in baggies and moist towling or peat, like we would do in an on-line trade? Also wondering if this is going to be an 'organized trade', where we know ahead who is getting what or if it is more of a 'free for all'? Either way is great by me, but I have a few plants that I would only bring as special request plants. I can bring along some of the plastic resin chairs if that helps out in the seating. I also have some wall planters, I will need to get pictures of them, they are plastic coated metal, and can hold two flower pots, if anyone might be interested.

Native plant sales in SE PA

Tyler Arboretum (Media, PA) is having a plant sale this weekend - not all natives, but usually a goodly selection of them. There's also Redbud Native Plant Nursuries in Middletown, PA, open all the time except Mondays. I have also been to a few native plant sales sponsored by the Delaware Riverkeeper's (sale moves around) and the Natural Lands Trust (Media, PA). Also, the Brandywine Conservancy (Chadds Ford) typically has a native plant sale one of the first two weekends in May. Not sure when they're having their sales this year, but you could check websites to see. Redbud has spoiled me, though. I have to drive by it every day on my way to my son's school! When the blues were here, many other birds were active too. The vultures were passing just over their heads. I remember the female sitting at the front of the woods and watching as a vulture flew about 20 feet over her head.

I haven't seen them since. The winterberries are almost gone so the blues may have been back for them. The mockingbird that was guarding them seems to have moved off for the Spring. In August, you can hear the mockingbird chicks all around here.

Thanks for remembering Ambrose. I will always miss him and see him again in Dog Heaven. I've been breaking out in tears abruptly since he died. Can't control it; they just happen. Plus my mood went downhill. My 91 year old mother's mood went downhill too. I realized I had to do something. Last week, I started looking at miniature poodles online. I found one called Blue Jay (too bad it wasn't blue bird). After looking at him for 3 days, I called the breeder last Saturday. On Sunday, I drove there to see the breeders and the puppies. Blue Jay (male)was very friendly and chewed on me because he was teething. Then I put a female, Lily, in my hands. The breeder said she had a heart murmur. Ambrose had a heart murmur for his 17 years. I decided I would take care of Lily and Blue Jay for the rest of their lives. I pick them up this Sunday.
