No Eggs Yet....Is There A Problem?

OK...I may be a bit premature with a concern but decided to post it anyway! Mama blue completed her nest days ago, but there are no eggs. Yesterday, I didn't see her at all, and I spotted Daddy about 4pm peaking into the box. We had horrendous weather earlier in the week up until 5am yesterday, then the storms moved out and it turned out to be a beautiful day, but somewhat cooler. Could this be the reason? She's back this morning and she and Daddy are flitting around, but she hasn't gone to the box.

According to my calendar, she laid eggs last year almost immediately after the nest was complete. Oh sure, it's MY calendar, not hers!!!LOL. I'm wondering what things come into play between completed nests and egg laying.

Hi Donna,

I guess it's mostly folly to predict such things... seems they all have their own different deciding factors. But I sure wouldn't worry if they have a completed nest and are both still around.

Missy's nest was essentially finished for 2 or 3 days before she laid her 1st egg (March 21st). And I've read of others leaving for awhile and coming back to lay... some call this the honeymoon. ;)

In a situation like this it is imperative that we know what zone you are in. If you are in Z4, the possiblility is that they couldn't have survived the cold. Other than that, I don't know. We had a broody hen in May of last year. After several hatched, several died and I think it was because she had to take care of the new babies and stopped sitting on the other eggs.

I live in Central Alabama, and moved to a new house 4 1/2 years ago. I have seen this couple every season in my small backyard, and at first didn't know what they were. They are so beautiful, and larger than the photos in any of my bird reference books. I am so happy to know that they have actually chosen to nest here in my yard. The shrub the nest is in is an abelia, and I have several of them. They get very dense, and I thinned out the foliage and removed several of the branches. I hope the towhees don't decide not to nest with me again because of it. I'll have to be a little less vigorous with my cutting and pruning next season. I found an empty nest in another abelia and I'm thinking that they may have used it last season.
