Thank you all very much. It is decided then, the feeder stays! I looked up pictures of both the downey and hairy and agree it looks like a hairy woodpecker more. Getting a decent photo of a bird for identification is considerably more difficult than trees. Even my wife's 10mp point and click leaves a little to be desired. One of my neighbor's Bradford Pears has been attacked by some woodpecker. It is the only tree in either of our yards I have seen with damage and being a tree forum regular I have grown to dislike Bradfords anyway lol.

This system seems to be working fine but the wireless shutter release uses CR2 Lithium Ion batteries, which are $6.98 each and at 25 degF they only last about 3 hours, however I found a source for two rechargeable batteries and a charger for under $20 on Ebay. I was concerned that the camera might not work well at that temp but it is doing fine, of course you have to leave the power on, which reduces battery life to 4hours, but that is not a problem because the Pentax *ist DL uses four standard AA batteries and I already have 24 rechargable AA's.

i live just outside of Durango Colorado and i have gambel oak brush outside the door. The acorn woodpeckers like the small acorns and pinyon nuts but also carry off corn and sunflower seeds. The Lewis Woodpeckers don't come often but i got a photo of a male this week. The flickers come through in the fall and spring back and forth to the mountains, and the downeys come in the snow storms of winter. I had a pair of scrub jays nest in the oak brush this year and they had 2 young ones whoi are regular visiters. Since we got a few snow showers i have dozens of Juncos and finches and sparrows daily.

I love watching them do their back and forth movement as they move up the post...We also have Red bellied woodpecker who visits, too! Wonderful photo, Marnie! Juanita
