four bluebirds!!!

My daughter is so sick of me saying "THREE BLUEBIRDS! I HAVE THREE BLUEBIRDS!!!" for the last 2 weeks. Just wait til I wake her up and say "FOUR BLUEBIRDS! I HAVE FOUR BLUEBIRDS!"

Today's going to be a great day!

Best wishes for a great season Ann! Hope you don't have any window peckers this year, I had one last year.

Thanks Lisa!

My feeders and houses aren't too close to the house...I've never had them near the windows. But I just made a 2nd feeder and put it a little closer to the house, for easier spying.

I'm slowly creeping the original feeder away and around to the front of the house. In my wildest dreams, I will have a pair in front and a pair in back of the house. There has been a lot of activity around the houses with chickadees, blues, and sparrows, but no one seems to have settled yet (I'm in MD.)

This will be my 3rd season with bluebirds but I never had the first nesting: one year the sparrows chased them off, and the 2nd year chickadees took that house and the blues went elsewhere (even though I have 3 houses) so I don't know what to expect at this time of year in Maryland. I'm much better prepared at this point, with sparrow traps ready to go and plenty of mealworms. With some luck, I'll be counting incubation days soon!

Thanks for listening!

These days DH and I have three main modes of locomotion ( using Edward Abbey's term). We walk, ride our bikes and drive a car. We drive the car so we can get from point a to b in a hurry. We ride our bikes for excercise and an overview of the neighborhood. But walking is our favorite form of locomotion, especially in the spring, when we notice all the new growth. A bulb pushing up, a tree starting to bud and leaf, the mustard plants blooming. It's a new beginning and we see it close up and personal

Hey, I really like your seedling! The edge looks very promising. I'm with you about the heavy gold edges, but depending on the color of the self, some of them are growing on me. Lucky you to have bluebirds, and I love the photo. We get a nice variety (including green herons that return every year, although there isn't any water here, so their presence is a mystery). Hope you post pics as it gets bigger. Chris

Bluebird nests are very tidy grass nests unlike sparrows & have blue or white eggs. You can check them regularly if your box is hinged to clean out sparrows, etc that start building. Birds have no sense of smell so scent near nest is a big oldwives tale. When I ran a Blubird box trail for a park we would check them each week, remove undesirable things from box, and log progress of active boxes each week (they didn't mind at all). If a nest has a failed attempt or destroyed remove old nest and often they try again. Sparrows have sloppy nests, wrens are of twigs, also chickidees and tree swallows may use -one has moss in nest and one lines with feathers. Keep an eye on nest b/c one species will often kick out another if allowed - just remove repeatedly if this happens-the other will give up. I used to have 3 boxes at my last house and as soon as blubirds moved into one, I let the wrens have the others-mine were probably too close to support more than one (possibly 2) bluebird families-they like space. Can anyone identify this fall berry?

Looks like Poke to me. Red stems, elliptical leaves and black berries in hanging clusters. They are invasive, and probably not the plant you would want in an urban garden, but out here in the country they feed the birds into the winter. I've seen three or four bluebirds hanging on one plant. Elderberries have flat-topped umbels of flowers and berries and the berries disappear long before this. ANd the leaves are compound. Blackberry vines produce blackberries and you know those aren't them.
