four bluebirds!!!

My daughter is so sick of me saying "THREE BLUEBIRDS! I HAVE THREE BLUEBIRDS!!!" for the last 2 weeks. Just wait til I wake her up and say "FOUR BLUEBIRDS! I HAVE FOUR BLUEBIRDS!"

Today's going to be a great day!

Best wishes for a great season Ann! Hope you don't have any window peckers this year, I had one last year.

My feeders and houses aren't too close to the house...I've never had them near the windows. But I just made a 2nd feeder and put it a little closer to the house, for easier spying.

I'm slowly creeping the original feeder away and around to the front of the house. In my wildest dreams, I will have a pair in front and a pair in back of the house. There has been a lot of activity around the houses with chickadees, blues, and sparrows, but no one seems to have settled yet (I'm in MD.)

This will be my 3rd season with bluebirds but I never had the first nesting: one year the sparrows chased them off, and the 2nd year chickadees took that house and the blues went elsewhere (even though I have 3 houses) so I don't know what to expect at this time of year in Maryland. I'm much better prepared at this point, with sparrow traps ready to go and plenty of mealworms. With some luck, I'll be counting incubation days soon!

These days DH and I have three main modes of locomotion ( using Edward Abbey's term). We walk, ride our bikes and drive a car. We drive the car so we can get from point a to b in a hurry. We ride our bikes for excercise and an overview of the neighborhood. But walking is our favorite form of locomotion, especially in the spring, when we notice all the new growth. Just checked again and the birds have left the nest. Don't see them anywhere on the ground. Maybe they fledged already and are in a tree? re: How is your box mounted? It should be on a slick pole with a predator baffle. It's a Peterson box on a pole and has a predator cone on the pole. I have no idea how the snake got in there. Been out there for eight years and has produced over 40 BlueBirds.

lydia2pin, did the nest still have a nice neat cup or was it flatten but clean? I have had a nesting of four bluebirds one year that while the nest no longer had the nice cup shape it does when it is first built, it was clean as a whistle. I have never seen such a neat nest before that or since then but it does happen. If your nest was flattened and cleaned then the babies probably fledged however if it was a nest still with a nice deep cup, chances are like Lisa said it failed. Hard to say for sure though. Like Lisa also said sialis.org has tons of info on offering nestboxes to Blues and other cavity nesters, with info on how and when to monitor to prevent problems and help the birds. Good luck! Donna

Either last year or the year before I had a Bluebird and a wren trying to build a nest in the same box. First the wren and I removed the sticks, then a Bluebird started her second nesting and the wren added sticks on the layer of grass, which I again took out. I did this for a few days when finally the wren must have given up cause the Bluebird went on to finish her nest, lay the eggs and all the eggs hatched and fledged. This box was at a park near our home so I couldn't add a wren guard as I couldn't watch to make sure it was accepted. I worried all the time about them but apparently the wren must have given up. This year the BLues down there fledged their first nesting about two weeks ago. I keep checking for the next nest but so far nothing. The daddy Blue is always there when I check the nestbox though so I know they are planning another nesting only thing is I hear a wren right in the area too singing away so I am afraid he wants that box too but so far no sticks in there.
