Who is in NW Georgia?

Hi,

I suspect that this year especially, we'll be seeing more 'regional' trends due to the crazy weather in different parts of the country.

I know that in north/northwest Georgia, we've had one of the coldest winters on record. We had some snow/ice in Feb. (or Jan., can't remember now) and I'm watching this week's weather report and we might be in for some more of the same this week. That isn't characteristic of this area at all.

For those of you here, how's the weather affected the bluebird sightings, activity? What about other birds?

As for me, we've had more birds than usual this winter but part of the reason is that last year this time, two neighbors had their trees cut down and we became a 'tree island' in my neighborhood.

As for bluebirds, I've had 3 of them all winter. I've seen flashes of blue elsewhere as I drive, but I'm not seeing as many blues as in the past winter.

How 'bout y'all?

Not long ago, it started to snow/rain which turned to snow/sleet which is now SNOW and it is accumulating! As I said, we're not used to this kind of weather and this is the second snow we've had in a month (first one was 2/12). It's lovely watching it but my hubbie is out on the roads.

I'll have some photos later of one of the male blues sitting in a heavy snow shower looking NOT happy! I hope they don't decide to migrate next winter but I might :)

One thing: bluebirds look STUNNING against a snow background!

Hi there Linda!! I am in NW Georgia! I am sick sick sick of this snow. I am a BB fanatic too! During the GBBC, the highest number I counted in one sighting here was 4. I wish I had 50 of them!! I have a Sawyer house in my back yard and I usually end up with 2-3 nests per season. A nasty male HOSP destroyed one of them last spring. He went in there and pecked holes in every single egg, and then thew 2 of the eggs out of the box. Just made me sick.~~Angie

I live outside of Atlanta and have ferns in my wooded damp backyard. I no longer cover them to protect the new growth during the late freezes that we get. They grow right back. I plant ferns anytime during the year - it doesn't seem to matter. My biggest challange is finding their favorite spots in the yard. I can plant 3 of the same ferns in different areas and one may thrive while the others eventually die out. Some varieties just don't like our soil/weather and they die out in a couple of seasons. The best luck I've had with non-native ferns is Autumn Fern. It must love our soil and weather. No matter where I plant them they grow very well they stay stately and green all winter. Dawn, Surprisinly we injected gas into this field yesterday. Denver hit 30 yesterday. And may be a few degrees warmer than us today. They are saying 25-30 for us today. We dropped to around -4 before we headed back up. It is 16 here now. I'm not sure if I've ever said before. I'm in charge of a compressor station at a storage field. Which means we took a depleted gas field and drilled several wells. We inject natural gas during times of low demand and withdraw duing times of high demand. The company I work for supplies most of the natural gas for the front range and also ship some to the east coast and also some to the west coast. I have my ventless heater going. And the wall furnaces in the bathroom and bedroom. The ventless heater keeps the rest of the house warm. I do use an electric heater in the computer room at times when I'm in there. I trust the gas heaters more than I do electric heaters. So I seldom if ever leave with an electric heater on. Being I work with natural gas everyday and also do electrical wiring it is my personal experience I base this opinion on. I've just seen more fires ect caused by electrical heaters, ect than I have gas heaters. Really we have was only a few degrees colder this morning than 2 weeks ago. And our highs everyday will be higher than they were for 2 days 2 weeks ago. The wind had a bite yesterday. I was outside about 3 hours here at work and then an hour after I got home doing chores and removing ice and running fresh water. Today there is no wind and it isn't so bad. Jay

Bougainvillea planted in NW Georgia

I agree, they can be evergreen, decidious, or annuals, it all depends on where you live. I am in zone 9b/10a in central Cal. I have several Bougainvillea vines in my yard, 7 to be exact. The ones in proteced locations (i.e. growing right up next to the house) are evergreen and even bloom into December. The ones out in the open are decidious. They lose most of their leaves in December and are bare until March, when they get their leaves back. I live in the countryside, so we get colder temperatures than people who live in town. I have seen Bougainvilleas in town blooming in January. Also, some bougainvillea varieties are more tolerant of cold than others. Of course this won't make a difference if you get refular freezes every winter, but if you live in a borderline zone, some tolerate frosts better than others. The bougainvillea x buttiana don't go completely decidious even if they are out in the open, they tolerate frost a bit more than the other varieties. Usually the fancy-leafed bougainvilleas like "raspberry ice" are less tolerant of cold and frost and can die back with light frost. In Jan of 2007, we had a freeze with lows in the low 20s that lasted for about a week. The bougainvilleas died back to the ground. They came back, but if we had freezed like that one every year, they would not be long-term plants and would eventually die.

As i've said before, we will be relocating in a month or so and i'm trying to decide what plants to take with me and what to leave behind. I'm marking them in case the frost hits before we move. I've found several i've never seen before, so i am so grateful for all the help Gardenweb readers have given me.

Hi, Linda. I am actually in NE Ga. Buford to be exact...
Funny, but for 2 weeks I have had a pair (Probably the same from future years,) and one single BB visiting every day except for yesterday, when we had all that snow. I believe it is the same pair from last year, as it appears like they are already checking out and apparantly "claiming" the box as theirs!I hope the single one can find a mate before a nasty fight begins! I have been giving out a few mealworms, but with the shortage of them and currently being unemployed, they will not get their treats as much. Please feel free to e-mail me...
