Hi Renee. Here are a few. Not sure what you would like to see so I will load up a bunch and hope something hits the mark. These were all taken this afternoon.

Mama laid her fourth egg today and began incubation this afternoon. I was glad she stopped at four. I can only imagine how crowded those nestlings will be in that Gilbertson PVC box. I have the nestcam installed so it should be interesting viewing.

Here Papa leaves the feeder with some meal worms for her.

Another trip a bit later.

This next bunch was taken just before she began incubation. One of the juveniles that was chased off several weeks ago came back this afternoon, apparently hoping to grab a few meal worms. Mama seemed totally surprised and did not chase her, but instead hopped up on a post and began calling for Papa. She did a full 360 degree turn before he showed up. I never saw such wing-waving.

In this shot you can see him arriving from the left. Together they chased the juvenile off again.

OK, now here is Papa bathing and then preening. I took a lot of shots but I will only show you a few.

Here is a sequence where Papa is feeding Mama. She is on the shepherd's hook and he tries to perch next to her, but kept slipping down. It took a while but he finally fed her the worms.

And finally, here they are together.

Hope I didn't OD anyone.

I am always awed by your pictures. I love them all. I can see that the wind was blowing their feathers in some of the pics, leftovers from the weekend storms I suppose. I'm glad to see spring. Keep the pictures coming, they always put a smile on my face. Ill never OD.

Containers have the advantage of as was said good feeder roots. They can also be planted any time of the year in most areas...though I would avoid shock if they just came form a greenhouse by letting them adjust to the area for up to a week before transplant. Disadvantages: Transmit pests and disease in soil which is why your local Ag is not too wild about containers being shipped into the state. Cost of shipping high. Trunk caliper large so no fruit bushing few viable eyes down low. If you buy a container from a local nursery during bare root season it likely will fall apart and leave you holding a severely pruned bare root.= that was planted a few weeks before. You should take a hose and remove all soil before planting into their permanent site. Container soil is often not good planting soil, plus you can inspect, spread out and prune the roots if needed. As to preference...I don't care much. Bareroots are cheaper and with a DWN SOFT order through a cooperating nursery I can get most on the rootstock I want at half the price of a container tree. I have ordered trees from Rolling Ridge, Burnt Ridge and DWN/Bay Laurel, Trees of Antiquity, Sanhedrin, Raintree, Stark, Grandpa, Just Fruits and Nuts, and Willis. Willis is the only one I would not order from again unless they were the sole source. Be warned the nurseries well out of your area may not carry cultivars that will do well in your area or on a good rootstock for your area. I would only look there if your orchard is full of varieties known to do well in your area and now you are now experimenting.

SSRI withdrawal ?

Jac, You probably don't remember me, but you sent me a butterfly bush last year! I was (and am, but not practicing at this time) a Psychiatric Clinical Nurse Specialist for the past 22 years. Every antidepressant has problems that can be associated with it, from sexual dysfunction to life-threatening electrical changes in the heart. I also consider that every time my son had strep throat, the antibiotics I gave him could cause Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis. A tylenol with a viral illness could lead to Reye's Syndrome, or just a plain tylenol with a fever could be "the one" that causes liver failure in a person with a hidden hepatic illness. I totally agree that you should have been told of the potential for Serotonin Withdrawal Syndrome, and the possibility of another associated problem called Serotonergic Syndrome that can be associated with all SSRI's. Thats where having people who are trained specifically in the treatment of depression is invaluable. Primary Care Physicians can spot and begin treatment of depression very well these days (thank goodness for everyone who, like myself, uses a GP), but if I had cancer, I would want to see an Oncologist, not an OB/GYN. The same thinking should be applied to any illness requiring special training, in my opinion. For as many people as I have seen who have had problems with a particular antidepressant, I have seen four times as many do beautifully. My hope is that one day, the science of the mind/emotions will advance to the point that a swab or a blood test will be able to identify the type of depression a person has and tell us, like a culture and sensitivity test does for bacteria, which medication has the best chance of treating the disease. Until that time, even the most well-trained and brilliant minds will continue to do their best and offer medications in the treatment of depression. Not all will be sucessful or pretty, but for those who have truly had a case of Clinical Depression, at least someone is trying. Not to try when a patient is asking for help would be worse. I will take a patient who is suffering side effects from a medication (though never the goal) over a patient who is no longer around to have a side effect, anyday. Do I think medications are over-prescribed? Absolutely! Do I think that people who have no business prescribing them are doing so? Absolutely! Do I think even the most highly trained Mental Health professionals sometimes miss the mark or over-prescribe? Absolutely!! I also know a woman who was told she had the flu and had an Aortic Aneurysm which ruptured on the way home from the hospital. I cared for a woman who convinced herself she had a yeast allergy, treated herself at home with vitamins and dietary restrictions, and all the while had a brain tumor that took her life. Her diagnosis came after she had killed a man and was court commited for evaulation to stand trial. Most people are amazingly resilient. Some are not. I am championing for those who are not and need a little help along the way (myself included at one time). I know my thinking is in direct opposition to many, and I never wish to challenge someone's right to choose treatments that that they deem right for themselves or their families. I just wanted to say, these medications, warts and all, make it possible for many people to work, maintain families and relationships, and in some cases, just survive another day of depression. I just hope that someone who needs treatment sees this and doesn't decide to throw the baby out with the bath water. Lea

Question for Dave on Investing rather than paying off

Jazi, Indeed, you ARE understanding the plan (and FAR ahead of the game compared to most your age... or even 10 years older!)... but missing one small (but important) element. What you have is a strategy where your tax-deferred assets are growing faster than the after-tax costs of your liabilities. You've created a "positive growth position engine." Once your assets outgrow your liabilities (thus, COULD theoretically be liquidated to eliminate the liabilities,) you have a Positive Net Worth. Just because you reach "Net Worth Positive" prior to an age when your tax liability starts to shrink DOES NOT mean you must GIVE UP the "positive growth position engine" you've established with your financial portfolio by immediately unwinding your asset/liability position. As long as your assets continue to grow stronger than your liabilities (after tax considerations,) just leave the position in place and continue to build your wealth outside the IRS' reach. When you DO reach that ripe age where the tax benefits change (or any other variable changes the net-positive growth results,) THEN it's time to unwind the mortgage liability against your liquidatable assets. Does that make more sense now? Dave Donhoff Just some mortgage guy ;~)

Hi Penny, OK... right off the bat I *HAVE* to ask; Is your bank providing you with an experience financial loan officer (not a loan salesman... but a financial planner & analyst that can weigh out your numbers & options and show you what they mean?) These questions are EXACTLY what a good planner knows how to sort out for their clients. If not... I have to ask... WHY are you GOING to that bank? (.... and then coming to ask us 'out in space' for analytical advice without the internal specifics? GRANTED; I am appreciative of your respect for me... but I'm still blind to most of your details, and you've not engaged me to your fiduciary responsibility... that is something you deserve!) Your 1st question is on market timing... whether the market for locking is more likely to reward you if you are patient, punish you, or be neutral. I certainly have my own market opinions, but I can't suggest what's best for you without knowing more of your financial situation (not just your loan rates & balances) as your total picture would tell me your stability, your security, and your income strengths. Your 2nd question relates to how much interest (points) makes sense to prepay in order to secure a permanent longterm lower cost of interest. The answer to that depends on what your alternative returns are in the accounts that you would be starving to withdraw those points from... as well as whether you have sufficient safety reserves to even consider such a strategy. TRULY... there is no question that a drop in your mortgage interest rate ought to be beneficial... but do you know what your blended household costs/rate of consumer credit and insurance coverages are? Do you know what kind of cash burden any consumer account amortizations may be creating? You could be overpaying on other consumer interest accounts, and may have too little of deductibles on certain insrance policies (potentially from a perceived lack of cash reserves... reserves you may be raiding to consider paying those "points.") You see... its not a "one thought" analysis... and if you are only talking to mortgage salespeople at the bank (regardless how truly friendly & well-meaning they may be,) you are as likely to "get it dialed in just right" as a random walker is going to make it from NY to LA. I'd suggest taking the time to find a worthy advisor you can trust. (HINT: that means my opinion is you are likely to be rewarded for doing so more than any potential punishment from rate market fluctiations.) Luck, Dave Donhoff Leverage Planner

Dave, I LOVE the shot of papa leaving the mealworm feeder!!! All of them are great though. We got about a half inch of snow last night with freezing rain on top of it. Windy and cool today, not very nice for the birds. I hope the Blues that have returned here to WI stay safe and fed somehow. I can't imagine any bugs being out anymore, has been cold again now for at least a week. Supposed to hit like 48 on Saturday though, I sure hope so!! Thanks for sharing your great pics!

Thank you Jane, and congratulations to you and your husband! In these days of changing social values it is nice to be reminded that there are people whose marriages last. I wish you many more years of good health and happiness together.

Hope your blues do show up soon. Our female is sitting on 5 eggs in a Gilbertson PVC box. I have the nest cam mounted directly above and it sure looks like it will be close quarters in there when the eggs hatch and all those youngin's start moving around.

Here are a few from yesterday, especially for you.

Dave

Usually when we see wing-waving, we don't get to see who they are communicating with, or why. In these three shots you see Papa coming, then she moves from the shepherd's hook, then he prepares to land there.

And a couple of shots of Mama taking a break from incubating. In the second shot she is actually wing-waving (with enthusiasm!)

Have a great day!!!!

thanks Dave,we are having a great day and to top it off I checked the box the blues usually pick for the first nesting and there is about an inch of pine needles in there. What a surprise when I got home and found that because I have not even seen a bluebird here in Massachusetts for many months.Guess they have been busy early in the day when we are not home.Cannot wait to see what happens.Again, thanks for the good wishes and the great pictures....Jane
