Some stills from Flight School Photography

Although the purpose of the Fly South with the Birds workshop was to photograph birds in flight, we also got plenty of perched birds. So here are some of those. These are all hand held with the 1D Mark III and 500 f/4.

So very ....... something, hard to find the adequate words. You have a gift! These are great Liz! The Kites are great, really like the bokah and background on the Shrike. And I found the GBH ... I will not spoil it for others.

These are all great!..birds I have never
seen, good detail..oh, I think the great
blue heron is on top of a leaf less palm
far back, right?

tsugajunkie, It looks like you're reading very selectively, not picking up on any of my points. I don't know what the actual numbers are. Let me be very clear about that. What I do know for certain is that used textbooks is $0 to author. The author would make more money by selling electronic copies of their book because more people would buy it. Heck, maybe people would be willing to pay even more than a paper book for it because of the convenience of not having to go to bookstores and wait in line then return the book because the professor changed his mind at the last minute. treebarb, I understand the problem of losing a lot of our manufacturing jobs to other countries. But saying that we should continue to waste paper to protect jobs is like saying we shouldn't use home solar systems because if everyone made their own energy, the people that work at the power plant would be out of a job. Or its like saying we shouldn't try to keep people off drugs because if nobody was on drugs, the people that work in the rehab industry would be in the unemployment line. There is a clear solution here. Provide hard copies for students that prefer that. Everyone else can use rights-managed digital copies and kindle type things.

I have mine and I bought some of my dad!s and mom's books on eBay. After my mom died, I gave them to one of her high school friends, who in turn gave them to the geaneology department of our hometown library. I need to contact the library and offer my dad's books, although I'm not quite ready to give them up. I saw photos of my dad I'd never seen and an ad in my dad's senior yearbook for my grandpa's luggage store. I was in the copy department for all my yearbooks and editor my senior year. Fun reading after all these years. I bought a yearbook on eBay from my high school 26 years before I graduated and was astounded to see how many of the faculty that I knew were on staff back then.

I remember that. It was good if it didn't have too many olives in it (I hate olives). :) The trick is to cut the veg small enough that the texture is mostly pasta, unlike a primavera where the texture is mostly vegetables and the pasta is there to fill the gaps. Vary it to go with what you have. For quantities, don't go overboard. I'd say about a third of a cup of everything, more or less, for a salad serving bowl full of pasta salad, but more of the bits you really like, or if you don't have much variety. The old version was a lot of stuff from cans/jars because the point was throwing something together from your pantry. That Italian dressing in the packets was most common, made with olive oil and red wine vinegar. The pasta needs a lot of flavor, so if you're making from scratch, use tasty O&V, salt or parmesan, and soak lots herbs and garlic in it. I'd use granulated garlic, or press fresh, rather than minced chunks. Dress the pasta while it's still hot, but well drained. Black olives, pimentos, marinated artichoke hearts (if they're packed in oil, only, add some S&P and herbs and let them set awhile. If they're fresh, they don't need to be marinated). Other possibles are asparagus, green beans, rehydrated sun dried tomatoes, hearts of palm, giardiniera (Italian pickled vegetables). Whatever you have and like, though cook any fresh veg, or at least blanch it. Take care of yourself and stay well!

So where is the Great Blue Heron? I have 3 possiblities that I see.

The heron is on the left, sitting in a palm tree that is a little closer to the foreground. It was a male trying to attract a female to nest there. There are some other birds, I think mostly anhingas. The heron is a bit brighter than they are. Here's a closeup of it.

the snail kite shots are awsome. all are great. did you get those kite shot from land or did they take you out in a boat? i see these all the time when i bass fish. but i never have my camera with me when i get the good angles.

Thanks - the snail kites were all from a pontoon boat. We spent 2 days out on the lake. The rest of the still shots I posted here were taken from land.

I find it very hard even with my 300mm f/2.8... and I'm a big guy... :)

Yup, the point of the workshop was to handhold heavy lenses. It's all in the technique and being efficient with getting a lock on the bird. I'm 5'5" 125lb so if I can do it, most anyone could.

I seem to notice a slight lean backwards .... and gloves?!?! LOL You're from Minnesota for goodness sake!

I handhold my 500mm at times, mostly because if I didn't I would miss the shot ..... Almost always when I take it down the next response is an exhale .... wheeeesh.

Hey, my Minnesota hands still get cold when it's in the 40's! Besides I'm a native Floridan so that's my excuse. ;-) They were really THIN gloves. Right before the workshop, central Florida was having a pretty good cold snap, it got down in the 20's on the morning I arrived. On the boat we started out early and it could get a bit chilly, especially when we were moving. The secret to hand holding is really just common sense - hold the lens up only as long as you need to. Sounds like you're already doing that. ;-)
