immature Hawk...should I feed him?

This immature Hawk (not sure what kind it is, I think a Red Shoulder) has been attempting to capture one of the many small birds that frequent our feeders. But to no avail. Today, in the snow and cold, he sat there and fluttered his wings, crying. It was the most heart-wrenching, pathetic thing I have ever seen. Now, I know the balance of Nature can be cruel, but I can't help to feel I should help the poor thing. Should I attempt to feed him? He's been visiting our deck for several days. What would be the best way to feed him? What should I give him?

That's a great shot! I don't know if my advice will make sense or not but here goes. The thing to be concerned about would be that if you feed him, he will become dependant on you for food and then lose his instinct to hunt. Why not leave a bit out in the morning and then if he gets hungry for more later in the day he will have to hunt for it?

A lawn that is 25x45 is 1125 sq ft. Since the fertilizer was 30% N (the fist number), you would need about 3.75 lbs of the fertilizer. 1125 sq ft is 1.125 thousand sq ft. 1.125 / .3 is 3.75. I'm not sure I follow what you mean when you say that you applied the amount recommended on the bag, but you can't come up with an accurate amount that was applied. Do you mean that you set the spreader setting to the number they recommended and spread as much of it on the lawn as that spreader put out? If so, I would recommend taking a different approach in the future. If I use bagged fertilizers and spread them with a spreader, the first thing I do is calculate how much I need. I then pour that much into the spreader (or half of it if it is more than enough for the spreader). I usually spread at a lower setting than recommended and make multiple passes in different directions so I get a more even distribution. I just keep spreading until the amount I calculated needed to be used is gone. The problem with using the spreader settings is that the amount you put down that way can vary by quite a bit depending on how fast you walk, how far you move over when you turn, etc. If you only use the spreader setting, you have now way to know whether you've applied the right amount or not.

I spoke too soon. Just when I thought they were all gone, I saw a single hummer today at my home made Salvia coccinea feeder. I hand make all of my feeders from small liquor bottles with realistic-looking Sculpey clay flowers. Sculpey (in case you've never heard of it) is a colored clay that you can bake to hardness in the oven at 275 degrees F. Aside from the sheer joy of the birds themselves, I've really enjoyed designing different feeders all summer and figuring out the perfect design needs and preferences. For example, through my efforts, I've learned that their reach with tongue and bill is at least 40mm, but won't go much over 50mm. I learned this when I made one of my flowers too long (about 53mm), and the poor birds would dip their bills in and come up empty! I had to break it apart and shorten it to allow the birds to get access. At first I stuck to only red flowers, but later got adventurous and tried a purple Lobelia. To my delight, they took to it immediately. Next year, I'm going to expand to white, orange, blue, and marbled combinations to see if they show any preferences. Anyway, I had just put this new Salvia coccinea feeder out yesterday, but was disappointed that all the birds seemed to be gone. I figured I'd have to wait until next year to see if they liked it. Talk about delayed gratification!! I was so happy to see a single bird come this afternoon and see her feeding from it. The window box with snapdragons was blocking my view, plus the late afternoon lighting made it really hard to see the throat well, but I'm pretty sure it was a female. As I mentioned earlier, I haven't seen an adult male since early August.

No this is not a joke. Yes, Jesus wept and Im reminded of that daily. No I dont think reckless and irresponsible alcoholism is a good example to raise children with. Look at him, look at me, we were raised by alcoholics. Im trying to ascertain if all of this is in my head or if I make mountains out of mole hills? He didnt actually cheat with a gay man-- He said he felt like he was drugged, he was there to promote his business and had to be on his best behavior, and then he drank vodka. He said he didnt remember a thing and couldnt wrap his head around why he would forget about Me.? Yes, that was real bad and he swore off alcohol for 2/3 weeks. The massage on my friend? I intervened and took friend home, he said he thought he was just an affectionate guy, I dont know, it seemed closet gay to me but I dont know any gay people and I have no idea about that. What I do know is he was abused as a child, sexually and physically and emotionally and so on. I think this is the underlying cause of it all. I grew up with it as it occurred to my mother, grandmother, aunt, brother. None of it is unbelievable anymore, just sad and sick and scary. I watched my mother pull it together to be an awesome provider, but she kept all the pain inside and released it with alcohol at nite after we went to bed. Still harmful, even to this day when she likes to drunk call her fiends and family. It surrounds me. I've done everything but slip away to the other side of the world. Look people, Im biding my time here. Im gaining insight, strength, and weighing tolerance against recourse. What Im saying is, I need back up, and I need to know Im not crazy, I need to know that when the other boot hits the floor as im sure it will, can I load the kids up discretely and go to my moms? Call the cops? How do I run away and where and do I present the ultimatum at that point? Do I give him another chance? Its so firkin hard because his other side, the functioning side, when hes happy, is so pleasant and wonderful and lovable. So funny and sweet and charming. The two sides of him are like Jeckle and Hyde. The kids adore him, especially our daughter. She deserves a dad, they both do. A Dad who tries. Will he succeed? Yes I do think he can. Im waiting it out, for the insurance to seek out a marriage counselor, and a therapist Im sure will be referred. Thats an important step in all this. If not to just prove that a great deal of effort was applied. Anyhow, thanks all for the support.

Dances-When I was 19 I was married and had my first baby!LOL I can't remember being as irresponsible as the younger generation is now.But,it's a whole different generation with different values.I was taught from an early age to take responsibility for things.My mom worked and I cooked and cleaned at an early age.Plus we didn't have "things" handed to us on a silver platter!LOL If we didn't work for it we didn't get it. Summer-I would have let them stay until he is deployed,mainly because he was going to find a job this week.I'm sure he wasn't thinking that far ahead but I do think he would find a home for the snake if she can't take care of it while he is deployed. I have really felt guilty about letting them both stay here and share a room all along because it is a moral issue with me.But,I figured they have been living together anyway and would be wherever they are.My justification I guess but it still bothered me. Anyway,I didn't know exactly what their plans were for her after he is deployed but they have been talking for the last few days like she might be planning to stay here.I wasn't going to agree to that but because of the snake incident I didn't have a chance to say anything to them.So I guess this is for the best in the long run.LOL Either way someone was going to be upset with me because I was going to tell them "It ain't happening"!LOL WE have had someone living with us for the last 2 years and are just getting rid of a DS and DGD. DH and I are looking forward to having our home to ourselves again. Lunchlady-The reason he isn't living with his mom is because she doesn't have room. He did text her and they are still in town but he didn't say where.He has a lot of friends here that they can probably impose on for a while.LOL Thanks again everyone.I'm still really bothered by his comment.

You know, no one really feed these type of birds. In zoo, I often find them with insects and mice. A bowl of dead mice is probably icky. A dish of insects may work better but other birds will get it first.

If you have a lot of junk birds like house sparrows, you can toss stuff like bread on the ground somewhere out in the open so that they become easier targets :-)

Check with the wildlife center in the area, they may have advice.

I don't know much about hawks, but I know they are opportunistic and don't always rely on live catches for their meals...I always see them swooping in on road kill. Perhaps you might try putting a small bit of ground beef out.....but maybe not on the deck itself, possibly somewhere further out in the yard....that way (hopefully) the hawk doesn't associate you with his "find".

I know a lot of people won't agree, and that nature should be survival of the fittest...but maybe this hawk just needs a little bit of help to get through. I know I would have a hard time sitting back and watching it suffer.

It's an immature Cooper's hawk, and if it's crying, she's being a baby.

She should get better at catching birds.

Don't feed her, unless you have a dead songbird to leave her...(joking)

I would agree that it is an immature Coopers hawk. I wouldn't bother to feed it. It will figure out how to hunt, its just a matter of working out the timing. I have an immature Coopers Hawk working my feeder lately and he misses more than he gets them.

I have no idea what to feed your hawk - sorry - but I was wondering 1) how long he has been there, trying to catch birds at the feeder, - maybe it's not as dire a situation as the hawk makes it sound; and 2) whether you might have a raptor rehab center not far away, in the event the hawk does not leave and does not eat. They could at least give you some advice. If there is no such center, I bet that your fish and wildlife service can help.

A Cooper's Hawk... thanks for the ID.
We stick our Christmas tree in the snow by the deck. Use it for the birds. I put a few strips of chicken on it, maybe he / she will find it. I don't plan on doing it all the time.
And yes, she was a big baby. That's what got to us.
Funny, as soon as she learns to hunt, we'll start feeling sorry for the juncos and doves that get eaten.
