Direction of wren house

I am so confused it's pathetic. What direction should my wren house be facing? Right now it's on a tree with the opening on the south-southwest side and the rear of the house is on the north-northeast side. Is that right or wrong?

I'm trying to think what direction bad weather comes from. I believe thunderstorms come from the southwest and move northeast. If that's right, then I put the wren house up wrong, didn't I? I don't know why things like this always confuse me.

here the winter storms normally come in from the west or west south west. with some storms there is wind and blowing snow, so we not only face bird houses but sheds or chicken pens or barn doors ect. to the east or south east.
not only to keep wind and the snow feom drifting in. but also the sun shines first on the east or south east facing buildings and even below freezing there is more melting or warming than those facing north or west.

I agree with dklucius, I've put all our houses and our roosting box so that they face away from the west (where our bad weather comes from). Ours actually face directly east (we live not far from the ocean, so the bad weather pretty much goes east out to sea).

You are not at all pathetic, I had to look this up too and I'm sure we're not alone! :)

Can you move it without too much trouble?

House wrens are only a threat to Bluebird eggs and new hatchlings until they are about 6 days old, after that the wren can no longer pick them up and throw them from the nest which is what a wren will do to baby birds. If you had almost fully grown babies killed in the nest it was probably due to House Sparrows, the wren maybe came afterwards and filled the house with sticks. If you have wrens in the area once the Bluebird lays the first egg you can install a wren guard, but you would need to watch closely to make sure the Blues accept it, some don't. A wren guard is made of cardboard and comes down off the front of the nestbox and down to conceal the hole of the box from the frontal view, sides can be added to prevent a wren on the top of the nestbox looking down over and stills seeing the hole. Info on this is on the sialis.org site. Also to prevent House Sparrow attacks you can add a sparrow spooker to the nestbox once the first egg is laid, it is to be taken down right after fledging. Please don't let House Wrens nest. You are allowed to remove their dummy stick nests until they move on. House wrens are very aggresive little birds that like to poke holes in other nesting birds eggs like Bluebirds, Chickadees, Tree Swallows, etc. So most people like myself that provide homes for the birds I just named do not let house wrens nest in their yard because of this reason. Thanks.

I think wrens will build a nest anywhere they can possibly fit into. Had one on a tractor where a gauge had been removed. And that tractor was being used. But ----- one year I had one of those decorative ceramic houses and sure as heck a wren built a nest in it. Sad to say the babies fried. Had to take them out with forceps. Please do not use these houses for birds. They are an oven and no circulation. Sorry for hi jacking your post!!

Good rule of thumb is point the opening in the opposite direction of the prevailing wind in the spring.

I wish I knew which way the wind typically blows. I think I'm gonna have to move the wren house (argh!) and hope they haven't started building in it yet. I just put it up Thursday though. I'm gonna face it more to the southeast or east southeast. My house is about 10-15 feet away so that will help block any wind and rain that should come from that direction. I think the only time any bad weather comes from that direction is when there's remnants of a hurricane.
