Wonderful pictures. I live in the suburbs where deer, skunks and raccoons inhabit a nearby hillside, but no bobcats that I know of. Thanks for the great shots.

Fantastic list of seeds! I think it is just great that you have focused your life on nature at such a young age. I too would love to have 10 (maybe 5) acres someday to plant a wonderland of natives plants, and am already doing that on 1.25 acres. Difference is, my interest didn't come into sharp focus until age 45. :) There are quite a few seeds on this list I am interested in, and I checked your want list and I have a few on that list. Maybe we can do a trade this fall? Just a note - on your want list is Cynanchum louiseae - this is an extremely invasive non-native vine that is becoming a serious problem in the Northeast US. And it has the additional problem that Monarch butterflies will "sense" it is in the Milkweed family, lay eggs on it, and then it will kill the caterpillars because it is toxic to Monarch larvae.

Be sure to read reviews before purchasing, and try to get an infra-red. The Non-typical Cuddeback Capture worked great for awhile, but eventually the local critters grew tired of going blind from the flash and began avoiding the area. I moved the camera and caught some of my former victims by surprise the first night but they wised up even further and with this latest camera relocation; I've had zip. As for that suspected jaguar thing, I just don't know what to think. I keep finding scratched up places on the ground-just out of camera range. I had read that researchers in Mexico use skunk glands and Calvin Klein's Obsession to lure suspicious jaguars close enough to their hidden cameras for photos. So, I bought some Obsession and sprayed it on the ground in front of the camera two days ago. Today, near my camera, but off to the side, I found another scrape and there was that same skunky, rank, salty smell I'd smelled before near the scratch marks by the pond several days ago. No photo of course. The other animals stayed away as well, I noticed. There's probably a twitter about me out there: "Danger: bright flash. Avoid plastic boxes" 3-9-09, Picazo Farm logging road, possible ground scrape From 2-24-09, Tracks and scat Unless I actually get a photo I can't say for sure what's leaving the tracks and scrapes. I sent some of the track photos to several big cat "experts" but only two answered, giving vague, non-commital answers that seemed to indicate they were as mystified as I was.

That feeding of deer is so, so very dumb. How do folks get to the point that they think they are "helping" the situation when feeding wild animals, the survival of which-at least as a species-absolutely cannot depend on handouts? In this state-since the repooplican takeover of state govt.-all wise management of natural resources, including deer, has been tossed into the fire (where they are also busy burning the books!) and what a surprise....as all efforts to halt chronic wasting disease-a serious disease of deer which apparently started out west but which traveled to Wisconsin via these ridiculous "deer farms", where many deer are together in crowded conditions, eating together, etc. have been halted, what a surprise! Now, following last fall's deer gun season, which is big business in a place like this, it is turning out that CWD is showing up all over the state, in something like 10% of animals tested. Good going guys! Bury your heads in the sand...maybe all problems will just go away! I'm thinking my venison-eating days may be over. Spongy brain disease, anyone?

Well, you're sure getting great results with that Canon 40D - love the Brown Creeper. I've only seen one here once or twice, and that was before I even had a digital camera.

Rachel - those last three pics are with your trail cam???? If so, it is MUCH better than ours. Ours is a Moutrie 5.0 and we have been quite disappointed with the quality of pics. Still debating whether we should return it or not. I know this is OT for this thread, but could you please tell me more about yours - and others that you have tried?

Great pics of the brown creeper - that's a hard one to get.

Thanks-getting a Brown Creeper that close, while actually holding a camera, with sun behind me, has never happened before! I heard it coming and got ready, just had a fraction of second to get it, and had to focus though intervening branches, so it was a serendipity

Trail cams could be considered OFF TOPIC, but I frequently get photos of wild turkeys, have also captured photos of owls, hawks, and ducks, etc. I usually put the cam on top of the mountain behind our house near a pond.

I bought the Non-typical Cuddeback Capture game cam last Feb. It uses a regular flash and is fast, clear, works perfectly, but animals quickly learn to avoid the flash, so I kept trying to buy an infra-red cam, but in vain.

Even though I bought one IR cam after another they had to be returned because NONE OF THEM WORKED; in all of them the sensors were too slow to capture passing animals unless they hung around in front of the cam, the cams all had blurry low-quality images, and two had malfunctioning software.
Fortunately, the companies supplied shipping labels for returns.

March 26- HCO ScoutGuard SG550 5MP Infrared Hunting Game & Scouting Trail Camera
May 18-Stealth Cam Rogue IDVR with 36 Infrared Emitters
June 1-Timber Eye 5 megapixel game camera from the Sportman's guide.

Finally, June 30, I bought a 2009 Cuddeback Capture IR 5.0MP Digital Game Camera on Amazon, thinking this would solve my problem, since the first Cuddeback works so well.

At first the new cam sort of worked, although the images were blurry even in daylight, it was very slow-often completely missing us when we walked back and forth in front of the cam each day to test it. After a month the cam suddenly stopped working altogether and I returned it.

I've read really good reviews on Amazon on the Leaf River IR trail cams. Here's one model on Amazon, but there's no review for this one

Well that is frustrating. So the ones above were with a flash model? The Capture?

You are saying that none of the IR ones you have tried gave good quality images, right? (in addition to the other issues)

When I go to the Cuddeback web site, they have a photo gallery with some very nice images, but I can't find info on which camera took the shot.

Now I'm even more confused on what to do.

All the models I listed, except for the regular flash Non-typical Cuddeback Capture I bought last Feb. are IR (infra-red). The regular flash on the first Cuddeback annoys the animals and I seldom get any animal at night more than once as they immediately alter their routes to avoid the cam. This is obvious when snow is on the ground; animals circle into the woods or go around the pond to avoid triggering the sensor-merging back onto the trail a few feet beyond the reach of the sensor, although daytime photos seem O.K. with some.

I don't blame them-every time I pass the trail cam at night and the flash goes off I startle so hard I nearly injure myself.

I read rave reviews on a 3 megapixel $200 Leaf River IR trail cam model last year, but that particular model is no longer offered on Amazon. The newer Leaf River IR models I listed could work as well but I spent so much money at Christmas I never bought one as I had intended.

I may have spoken too soon.
We had ice and rain for the past few days and when I retrieved the SD card from the top of the mnt it was empty again.
Dunno what to think..guess tomorrow I'll check the fresh SD card I put in the cam this afternoon. Maybe the Cuddeback is kaput now??

Wow, that is a fantastic shot of the Chickadee. The shine in his eyes, and the reflection of his toes in the water is really eye-catching. I love it.
