The EarthTainer 'Farm' July 1, 2009 Photo Update

I'll post an update once per month.

Plants now growing towards (or out) of their 74 inch cages. Marianna's Peace now 7 ft. tall.

Marianna's Peace:

Bloody Butcher began with ripe fruit in early June. Taste was fair. Hege German was the first large beefsteak-type to ripen:

Another variety that I *thought* was Black Zebra does not appear to be so:

It came from seeds from the 2007 NORCATT at Wild Boar Farms event:

Can you identify it???

So far, it is the tastiest one of this early season.

The "New" Tomato-tone vs "Old" Tomato-tone trials on several plant pairs continues, with thew Old formulation clearly producing taller plants and on average, 20% more fruitset. My trials with mixing one bag of Old and one bag of New are showing promising results. Goose Creek (New on the left plant):

First crop of corn has been picked with moderate results. Ears were about 5" to 7" long. Legend, on the left, Seneca in the next 'Tainer, and the new crop of Honey Select Triple-sweet in the 2 right 'Tainers:

Just for fun, I measured the tassels in the right 'Tainers and they are 9 ft. 6 inches above the moisture barrier.

The Gotta Have-it is doing well again in the 'Tainers this season:

On several stalks I am seeing 2 ears per:

...and the Pepper plants are getting in stride with the warmer weather:

So far, so good. Moderate Powdery Leaf Mildew to contend with, but Exel LG seems to be keeping in under control.

Congrats. They look awesome and I am so jealous to say the lease.

I strongely suspect that is a pink berkeley tie-dye that I have been trying to get a hold of. See below. I am definitely going to norcatt, as soon Brad post the date.

Ahh, I love the photos, Ray!! The tomatoes look absolutely stunning.

Btw, did you ever get the e-mail I sent you back re: your work table? I know one of the mails you sent me went to my spam folder, so maybe the same happened to you, but then again, I know you've been really busy lately.

Great update, Ray! I didn't get my peppers and tomatoes into the garden until May 1st. Last year it was an even milder Spring - though we had a little less rain. This is my third year growing peppers. I have a 3 year-old Hungarian Hot Wax pepper that has become more and more prolific with age. Not only does the woody trunk support more pods, but it seems that the pods are also hotter/more flavorful. Since all peppers are perennial, pruning them back - foliage and roots - is the best way to keep them vital and producing. My goal is to keep my peppers alive over the winter for as many years as possible. Josh

Raybo: I'm ok. Could use a hot tub soak! lol. Regarding my plants, tomatoes have undergone a good bit of stress as of late with the roller coaster weather, but all of them survived fine. They just got a bit ugly. I need to watch out for blight. I probably have a dozen or so tomatoes already growing, some of them only 2-3 weeks away from being ripe & picked. =) I'm a bit worried about my peppers though. They're in my cold frame, but with all this cloudy & rainy weather, they've stayed at about 1-2 inches tall for I swear the last few weeks. I'd take them indoors & put them back under the lights, but my wife would kill me! She's already demanding I clean up my "plant room" so she can have it back...lol. - Steve

Looking good Raybo! Mine are starting to reach for the stars and I have to start to consider finding more cages. I don't have dang near the amount of fruit that you do. We've been rainy and humid in the 80s here in Central Kentucky. All growth is accelerated from a year ago. The first Japanese beetles are emerging out of the soil already and it is only mid-June. I didn't expect these guys for a couple more weeks. Cherries were red and devoured by birds a week in advance and I'm having a bumper crop of raspberries already.. just insanity in the back yard! I have had 3 red perfect EarthTainer tomatoes in May and looks like a huge gap before I get more ripe.

star, My concern is that it is ALREADY on its way to "jungle" foliage. Today I gave all of the "offending" plants a haircut down to 65 inches. I want to encourage more robust plant development in the lower and middle sections: BTW, the sweetcon has started to tassel in a big way: So I may get corn by July 4 for the dinner table. I take that back Ray. I believe it is the Pink Boar, or black and Brown boar from the 3 chambers. I think more Pink Boar due to deeper pink color ????

Wow those tomatoes sure look great, nice work on the containers also. Looks well organized, and you have certainly put the right amount of effort in, deserved of those great results!

I too was thinking of using those containers for my tomatoes. I got some 7 gallon pots left over from a landscaping company instead, as they were cheaper (1$ a piece). However, it is extremely labour intensive keeping them watered, so I am thinking of buying those containers to create a "self-watering" system by placing the 'totes' under my 7 gallon tomato containers.

Anyway, good job, keep up with the pics!

Awesome first batch of matters Ray, and I'm sure that Ed's Mellenium and Goose Creek will be next to tease us to think BLT's. Are you growing Big Beef? Mine went south late last week so I'll be waiting till next year to taste a BB.

Really enjoy those pictures, but they do make one drool. Whatever that mystery tomato is, if you find out for sure, let us know because I'd like to try growing some next year.

Wow, my tomatoes are doing really well for zone 5 (they're just setting fruit) but due to weather we can't set plants out til Memorial day and by about halloween our season is over, it'll take almost til then for my plants to even come close to catching up to what you have now. Excellent job, I'm going to grow more containers next year to avoid weeding some insect pests and save space in my small plot, thanks for the pics and inspiration
