Happy holidays everyone, its time for the Hanukkah Gelt Swap! Wikipedia has a really great and informative page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanukkah and can tell the background of Hanukkah much more effectively than I can so you should read it... Since the holidays are a crazy time for everyone I thought Id post a little early, so HERE WE GO!

~~~Rules~~~

~Sign ups will go until Dec 6th and partners will be announced Dec 7th.

~Packages should be a medium flat rate box with delivery confirmation and are to be sent out by Dec 19th.

~If you are new to MNF please send me an email with your GW name and mailing address. New members will be required to send first.

~Hanukkah is an 8 day celebration, so we will each send 8 presents to our partner. These can be anything from ornaments if you know your partner has a tree, to seeds, winter or appropriate holiday trinkets, garden goodies, crafts, BE CREATIVE!!

~In the tradition of chocolate gelt, please send your favorite chocolate goodies as well. This can count as one of your presents if you want.

~Games will be posted throughout the swap.

I-17 I hope everyone's day is going well (or at least better!) I had a fan-tab-u-lous day... got some errands done, both basil types and a tomato have sprouted, chatted with my new neighbors Rich and his wife (whose name I forgot) AND did some planting of last year's dahlias and a few of the goodies from my box! Did I say box? Heck yes I did! Mrs. Speedy-Gonz-Bunny had her DC# emailed to me before I had even finished passing out partners, and I must say SERIOUSLY outdid herself! Ann H., traditional Chanuka foods vary with the community. Jews of Eastern European descent eat latkes (but never agree on how to make them). Israelis eat fried filled doughnuts. As you see in the string, and can find on many web sites, everywhere in the world, Jews come up with something different for Chanuka. The one constant is that it should be something cooked in oil; that's the point. The idea is to commemorate the story about the oil for the menorah. lpinkmountain, if you use a mix for matzo balls, you will go to hell. JUST KIDDING! But really, I have never understood what the point is of that mix. I mean, matzo balls contain matzo meal, salt, egg, water or broth, and fat (chicken fat best if you are not a vegetarian and your cardiologist isn't looking). So what's in that mix? I think it's just matzo meal, salt, and some bouillon powder (which I don't like anyway); you still have to add the rest -- doesn't really save any time and just costs a lot more and uses more packaging. Lakeguy, here is how I (a genuine Jewish mother) make chicken soup and matzo balls. It's a very simple recipe, without even any dill or garlic, but it really doesn't need it, because the strongly developed chicken flavor holds its own, so try it this way first. Really, you can make any kind of chicken soup your family likes, but make sure to follow the two essentials about the type of chicken and the length of cooking. Try to find a kosher chicken -- the bigger, fatter, and older, the better. The taste is just much, much better. It's not that the kosher slaughtering makes a difference. But they grow them bigger, and they don't feed them chemicals (not for kosher purposes, just to broaden their market to foodies), and the soaking and salting of kashering is like brining it. If you can't find a kosher chicken in your town, then go for an organic one, I guess. Lindac taught me the money-saving tip of using a package of wings instead of a whole chicken (kosher chickens are not cheap). Gellchom's Jewish Chicken Soup (eat! eat!) 1 cut up kosher chicken, or a large package of wings, necks, etc. 2 stalks celery, NO LEAVES, scraped and cut into sticks 2 large carrots, scraped and cut into sticks one whole onion, peeled Salt and pepper Rinse the chicken and put it in your soup pot. Cover with water to about 3/4 inch from top. Bring to a good hard boil, reduce the heat, and skim. Then add the vegetables, 1-2 T salt, and some pepper. Cover and simmer a LONG time -- absolute minimum 1 1/2 hours, but I like to let it go to much longer, even to 6. If it cooks too far down, then just add some water; the taste will still be plenty rich, I promise. Remove chicken and use for something that can have seriously overcooked chicken! Discard onion (and celery, if you want, but I like it in the soup). Remove carrots and set aside. Strain soup and return carrots, celery, and maybe some of the chicken. Chill and remove some but not all of the fat before reheating. Serve with matzo balls, kreplach, noodles, or rice. Matzo balls (this is just the old recipe off the back of the Manischewitz matzo meal box, before they changed it from schmaltz to oil) 2 T schmaltz (rendered chicken fat; buy frozen in kosher market or make your own) or oil (if you must!) 2 lg eggs, slightly beaten ½ c matzo meal 1 t salt, optional 2 T water or broth (use broth if no schmaltz) Mix schmaltz and eggs. Mix matzo meal with salt and blend. Add water and mix. Cover and chill at least 15 minutes. Boil slightly salted water. Reduce heat to low, form balls (with wet hands, and note that they will enlarge as they cook), and add to soup. Cover and cook 30-40 minutes.

One set of grandkids is getting an xbox and games and another set is getting a wii and games. A couple of months ago we took 2 g-daughters(ages 6&8) for a weekend in the RV. There was a huge playground at the park. A friendly grandpa type was using his metal detector and every single kid in the park began to follow him and ask questions. DH and I stood back to watch our g-daughters. Their Dad is a police officer so they have been warned of stranger danger many times. It only took about 2 minutes for them to become completely involved in what the man was doing. The 8 yr old even asked him if she could help dig if she found a stick. This guy looked like the Pied Piper with all those kids. So DH and I are giving each other metal detectors for Christmas and the girls will get them for their birthdays this year. We look forward to taking them out to look for buried treasure. luvnola OT - I have 2 girls 10 1/2 months apart. They are in their 30s now. I loved having them so close in age. In high school they ended up in the same psychology class. They had to write papers about their families. That teacher must have enjoyed the different perspectives from siblings.

well, we do the traditional seven fish dinner on Christmas Eve for 27 people! Start with shrimp cocktail then the pasta: stuffed calamari in red sauce/gravy and anchovies sauteed in garlic, S&P, and evoo, both served over linguine... a red and white pasta then the fish course: crab imperial, scallops, smelts and salmon, this is served with garlic bread, an olive tray with mozzarella balls and roasted peppers, cooked greens, broccoli rabe & baked artichokes. then dessert: cannolis, red velvet cake, cheesecake, cookie trays and chocolate cream pie. coffee and espresso good wine served throughout!! For our Christmas dinner, just us 5 traditional thanksgiving dinner, but DH & DS want some beef, so they have filet steaks. dessert: leftover from the night before the feast of the seven fishes originated in southern italy and you can have 7, 9 12 or 13 fishes. from what i read and heard, there really is no set number. it can range from 7 for the days of the week or the seven sacraments. 9 im not sure, 12 - for the 12 apostles, 13 - for the 12 apostles and Jesus. you can have any type of fish, depending on availability. if anyone has any other info that would be great or if i am wrong, just let me know. i hope everyone has a peaceful and joyous holiday season. enjoy your family and make special memories to share with your future generations!!!

There is no question limit, but if we get to 20 Ill tell you the answer, unless yall just want to keep going until someone gets it. Its not socks, but it can be kinda sock-ish. (I hope that doesnt confuse anyone too much, in the long run.)

OK, now I'm really stumped. I can't even think of an appropriate question at this point.

The only things I can think of are footed PJ's (footies) and nightshirts. But, both of those are available in adult sizes.

Okay, I just looked through this whole thread (swap), and Maryann's only posting is that she wanted to join this swap, back on the 20th of November. Do we still consider her a part of this or not? My gut instinct is to send this box on Amelia, thus continuing the swapcircle, and making sure Amelia gets her box, skipping Maryann. What says the hostess and group? Is this what I should do???

Amelia, good suggestion! I just sent her a note, asking for her address and if everything is okay. With the holidays like they are, they can be pretty hectic. I'm hoping she's just been a bit busy. Hopefully we'll find out soon.

I e-mailed her also. Found out it was actually me that had caused a delay --- about 3 weeks! I was working on the trade with Maryann when I was hospitalized in late August. She was extremely patient and very understanding, especially since I just disappeared for a couple of weeks.

Dan, I second the idea to give Maryann some time to reply. Then go ahead and send to Amelia if she doesnt. Ive traded with her a few times and shes always been very good about responding.

The 20 questions answer IS feety-pajamas, and Ive never seen them in adult sizes. Where have yall seen them? Way to go April and Amelia! Do you guys want another round?

I've been forced to find these. My daughter insists on a pair of footed pajamas every year. As she grew up, I had to search to find them. (She's 22 now; need to order a pair for her Christmas.)

When I was little I always had feeties to sleep in, otherwise Id kick the socks off in my sleep. I outgrew my last pair when I was about 6 or 7... Next month Ill be 25, and my toes are always freezing so I know how your daughter feels! Ive taken to wearing big sweater-like socks around the house, though.

Try wearing a crocheted or knitted cap. It will keep your feet warm better than socks.

I just received an e-mail from Maryann and she's been taking care of some family stuff (I'll let her go into details if she wishes) and should be back this weekend. She's looking forward to still participating in this swap, which is a good thing. Sometimes it's being in a trade or swap that keeps us going.
And now, I get to go try to deliver the mail in the middle of a blizzard. Oh yeah, what fun.

Glad to hear that Maryann is OK. Stay warm Dan! I cant imagine what its like up north. Here in mid-Michigan its a wind chill of 0 degrees and blowing snow, and the whole state is under a weather warning of some kind or other!

Amelia, how does a cap keep my feet warm? I just have poor circulation to my feet, and they used to turn a lovely shade of purple. Dont worry though, the doc says occasional purple is OK. :)

Laura, the snow is a good moist one up here right now, perfect for building a snowman! After four days at work, I'm pushing up against the overtime horizon, so tomorrow I only have to work 5 hours, and then I'm off until Monday morning. Cool, eh? I just might get out and play in the snow, after sleeping about 24 hours if the kids let me!

Amelia, I'm going to take a wild guess here, but does the cap help because it helps keep in your body heat? I know that we lose most of our body heat through our head. Now, my solution to the whole "keeping warm" thing is to walk over and turn up the thermostat. I know that's not very "green" of me, but it certainly is appreciated by my houseplants! I've got some raspberry-colored geraniums I brought indoors which are blooming, so I must be doing something right, you think? LOL!

How many days until Spring???

Amelia, I tied a large scarf/ bandana over my head last night and my feet stayed warm. That is such a cool trick!! I woke up to Rufus chewing on the ends of my scarf though. I swear that cat has Pica or something!

Dan, I want you to know Ive gone a little (read WAAAY) overboard on the craftiness... apologies in advance but Ive been relieving exam stress with it.

Any ideas where everyone has disappeared to?

Not sure about everyone else, but I've been losing myself in my new Thompson & Morgan seed catalog. I've decided to only make one order this year, and it'll probably happen this weekend, and it's looking like it's going to be a BIG one! 'Tis the best way I know to beat the winter blues when dealing with the blizzard that's going on right now outside. BRRRRR!!!
