Eco-lawn (-- too good to be true?

Hello:

I live in Ontario, Canada. The current "hot new thing" is eco-lawn (check out www.wildflowerfarm.com). It consists of 7 different types of fescue that have (according to website) long roots, slow growth habit, fine grass blades that flop over when long. Does not require frequent mowing or watering. I've heard/read lots of good things, but have also listened to skepticism from my local garden center. What are your thoughts on this?

Thank you very much for your inquiry. Ah, the grass is always greener on the other side. I have seen the web site and understand the concept. It will work where you are, but not everywhere due to climates. The fine leaf fescues are perfectly suited for this. There is no doubt that once established (this will require some persistence and patience) you can reduce inputs. You also can mow it often at a 3 inch height and get a pretty good look. It is not going to look like Kentucky bluegrass ever, and if your neighbors have something different than this, you will stick out. That is my two centsÂ worth.

That product does sound good. Would it be suitable to be "mixed into" an existing lawn? I didn't realise finer grasses were more drought-tolerant, I've always preferred the broader greener (and more thirsty I guess) parts of the lawn which is definitely a bit patchy. To top it off it needs aerating and top dressing, and we have a large dog who is no doubt responsible for the brown patches on the lawn, which is mostly "hers"

I'm not after a showpiece but would like a healthier lawn, we are in Kamloops, BC which is quite arid - we get all of 12-14" (350mm or so) of precipition total, per annum, so it's not much. Most people here water a lot, I'm not so comfortable with it, having lived in Australia for many years, I'm into water conservation. We are also at a fair altitude, I would guess at least 1800' so the warmer seasons are noticeably shorter.

I fully intended to top dress this year with a pickup load of compost from the recycling centre but haven't yet taken my canopy off to get the stuff yet (that's my excuse) and wonder if I should wait til spring, or can I do it in the fall? I'd like to aerate, top dress and seed, I was considering temporarily fencing off half the lawn for a few weeks to keep the dog off the part I'm working on.

You may be doing to your property what I did to mine over the past twenty years and am now trying to rectify. As a rabid environmentalist back then, and still only slightly modified, I have always prioritized saving the planet over how my personal environment looks, inside and out. As I've always been a messy person anyway, the results have not been good, and I am looking at spending my 50s correcting for those errors, inside and out (unless we just burn the place down!) - we called the outside my "uglification project" for a long time. Not that this is the place for those true confessions, but I thought of you as I read the thread linked below which, although it discusses the indoors, can be applied to the outdoors. You can certainly replace lawn with random pieces of plastic, wood, and garbage, but I don't think it will lead to you being happy in the space or with the look. My difference was perhaps that I was fully plant-crazy certified, and working toward an objective of making space for my plants, so there was some overall trajectory to the process. But like Frankie, I'm not hearing an overall purpose in what you're doing, and that is a recipe for disaster. I didn't actually make a success of it until my husband and I sat down and made a plan for the back yard that addressed how we were going to USE it as people, and in the front, how we wanted it to LOOK and FUNCTION. And the truth is, using your garbage to kill the lawn doesn't keep the stuff out of landfill, it only delays it going in. If you can recycle soft plastic, getting it dirty just removes that option. Mulch, with or without layering, will definitely do all that better - contact a tree service and see if they can bring you a load. You may be romanticizing the dandelions on the basis of using no herbicide, but (a) you don't have to use herbicide to get rid of dandelions, and (b) although pretty in spring, dandelions are not romantic or environment-friendly; they are an aspiring monoculture. Dandelions, like norway maples, do not have any plans to coexist with other plants but rather to displace them. That is what they are equipped for and it is why they are called weeds. Whether weeds are 4 inches or 40 feet tall, they are in takeover mode. Dandelions, buttercups, and many others, if you show any mercy, they will later show you none, and as they do not respect property lines, your choices will land on your neighbours, and they will use more herbicide. I have frequently thought that municipal herbicide bans would be far better formatted as bylaws requiring people to be responsible with their own property maintenance by controlling weed growth. Across the street and down the alley there are a few uncontrolled (and very dense!) patches of dandelions that render my own earnest efforts at control laughable, and hopeless. Anyway, it's your journey, and prior to mine I might not have listened to anyone who'd trod the path before me either. The good news for you is that grass is easy to kill. But filling the void it leaves is quite another thing. KarinL PS have you considered an electric mower? gotta love threads like these, and gotta love the people that need to convince themselves that their $3,000 honda generator was made by GOD himself and since they bought one, - everyone else should buy one too. especially had to laugh when someone suggested buying a generac over a another brand with a real honda engine. let me remind everyone that pride of ownership is a huge factor here, and if you ever take a trip to a honda dealer, you will find a long line of equipment in the back room waiting for repairs. so just because you bought one of the most expensive generators around, doesnt mean they dont break. so seriousy - get over yourself. i know this is an old thread but the issue will go on forever. my personal feeling if i were to buy another generator, is to buy the same deal the OP described. many suppliers offer generators with real honda engines for about $200 more than a similar sized unit with a honda clone. AND - even the honda clones these days are extremely reliable if broken in and maintained properly. what many people dont know, is the clone engines are designed using expired honda patents, and have come a long way in recent years. the karting world even has a separate racing class for them, and a 6.5 hp engine can be modified to push almost 20hp and rev up to 9000 rpm. that being said, a clone motor will have NO PROBLEM running a generator at 3600 for the occasional black out and power loss so long as you use common sense to maintain it. i dont care if JESUS HIMSELF built your honda generator, if you leave the same gas in it for 4 years - your carb will need to be cleaned. now - i am not saying that honda and honda clones are of equal quality and reliability, but something has to be said for a $650 ETQ generator with a pure sign wave, that makes more power (7250 cont) and will keep my lights on just as well as a $3,000 Honda with 5000 cont watts.. furthermore, after your 2 year warranty expires on your $3,000 honda, you can enjoy the $100 an hour labor rate, and $1200 repair bill god forbid you ever need to bring it to a dealer for repair - THAT YOU WILL DO since you spent so much money for the "best" me on the other hand - if my $650 generator gets used 3 times in years, i will feel i got my moneys worth out if it, and it it dies - i will toss it the garbage or sell it for parts, and buy another brand new generator with another 2 yr warranty for less than you paid for the labor alone on your repair bill.. - unless your a contractor using the thing on remote jobsites for 30 weeks out of the year, you have no need for a $3,000 portable generator anyway, because this is who these things are made for. for $2400 you can buy a 12kw whole house standy unit at costco made by generac, thats completely automatic, runs off natural gas, and is big enough to run 2 central air units along with most of your home. lastly - I hate to break the news to all the honda guys, but honda is not the "top of the line" when it comes to reliable generators. i work for a major utility company, and you will not find ONE honda generator on ANY utility truck.

There are neighbourhoods in Florida where many of the yards have rock lawns! They have the yard paved and then rocks are spread on top of it. It's not xeriscaping, in fact it is kind of the opposite, since the ground can't absorb any of the rain that falls - that's bad for the ole environment. I think it looks ugly as sin, but I guess some people think it's great :-) I'm not a lawn expert by any means, I don't even have one, and if I ever move to a place with one, I'll probably be ripping much of it out, but I do know that if you want a nice looking lawn then you're going to have to water, fertilize and mow it - at least a bit. White clover is something I like but it's not perfect. It does have flowers which attract bees, and give people who like monoculture grass lawns major heebie-jeebies :-). Some people live in areas with homeowner covenants that prohibit it, or anything else that isn't grass, so make sure that you don't have a restriction like that if you're considering clover. Clover can spread to garden beds, especially if allowed to go to seed, but so can grass. One other benefit that many people with clover in their lawns have noticed is that deer and rabbits, when present, often prefer to eat the clover instead of their garden plants. Most fescue grass is 'tall' fescue, which isn't what you're looking for - The "Eco-Lawn" fescues are probably some of the newer 'dwarf' fescues. I believe they're a fair bit more expensive than tall fescue or bluegrass (another very common grass here), but the amount of mowing needed will be less since they're slower growing. You'll need to water well in the first year after seeding, but since fescue roots go quite deep only occasional watering is needed in later years. If you buy a mulching mower then you won't need to fertilize very often, as the grass clippings compost into fertilizer. I'd also suggest you go to the biggest/best nursery in your area (Not Home Depot or Walmart!) and hear what they have to say about what grows well in your area. If there's a master gardener group or program in your area you might be able to get some feedback from them as well. And as far as maintenence goes, you can always hire a lawn care company, or the cheaper alternative of a neighbourhood teenager to mow the lawn and take care of other tasks :-) BP

Yup, and some no-mow or low-mow turf mixes also include fescues in addition to the buffalo grass, etc. To my eye, they can be a reasonable alternative, provided fast and large-growing annual weeds don't gain too much of a foothold. And of course, if they do, broadleaf herbicides will take them out, though of course, that is one of the management regimes you're trying to avoid. Then there's my lawn: Once a pretty good stand of K. bluegrass and fescues, with a little perennial rye still in the mix, over time, what has happened is that the Glechoma (creeping jenny, sonofabitch, various other names) and the wild blue violets have so proliferated that that is pretty much what I've got now. The Glechoma smells good when it gets mowed, appears to be foot-traffic ready as any turfgrass, and requires multiple herbicide applications to be gotten rid of. The violets? Nothing short of total lawn re-do is going to get them. For now, I'm just living with it. +oM

I should add, I use a push mower with no catcher so am mulching the grass somewhat as I go, I'd prefer to keep it that way, only downside is the dog does track some clippings in, but the push mower is good exercise anyway!

As for fertilising we need to keep it as natural and minimal as possible owing to the dog (her stomach's a bit sensitive) - she is 'fertilising' the lawn herself somewhat and we do have dung beetles here so the lawn's getting a little bit of natural aeration if I miss a few dog poops over a couple of days, sorry if that's too much info!

We went with an eco mix in the back yard--ours was a perennial rye, yarrow, and chamomille mix, with some super short wildflowers thrown in. The first 2 years we watered, mowed (to 3 inches), and fertilized about half as much as we were putting on our non-eco-friendly front yard, and it looks pretty nice (and smells nice when cut too). This season I've been testing it out how long we can let it go without water or mowing. After 1 hot week with 1 watering, the grass is dormant but the chammomille, yarrow, and wildflowers are blooming (in contrast, the front yard is lightly stressed with 3 deep waterings per week). The lawn is less than 6 inches high (mostly from the flowers), and we haven't mowed in ~3 or so weeks. BUT...it was my first attempt at putting a lawn in, and during this test I've discovered that the coverage for the yarrow and chammomille wasn't complete. Areas with only rye grass are brown and pretty awful looking. I'll be posting elsewhere to see if anybody has suggestions for remedying the incomplete coverage.
