fescue going dormant in summer

Hi, We live in NW Georgia and are currently growing fescue grass. Its beautiful nine months out of the year but the hot, hot summer months it goes dormant. Is there another grass seed we can sow that will look great in the summer but allow our fescue to come back when the weather gets a little cooler? We love the fescue but here in Ga. when summer hits the rain goes away and so does the fescue. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Judy

Dear Pretty Petals,

Thank you very much for your inquiry. Tall fescue is a great choice in your area, and unless watered judiciously during the summer months, will go dormant and there is not much you can do, as you have learned. The good news is that is comes back (and most likely better than if you over water and it gets diseased and dies instead of just going dormant). I hope that makes sense.

As for another grass, I am afraid that the other grass would need to be a warm season grass, most likely bermudagrass. I have seen this done and it can work, but you have to manage the yard for tall fescue, not bermudagrass (which means you will not fertilize the bermudagrass during the summer) otherwise the bermudagrass crowds out the tall fescue and during the fall/winter you will not be as happy. If you do use bermudagrass, go with a common bermudagrass. One word of caution, if you put bermudagrass in your lawn, there is no turning back, as this grass is impossible to eradicate.

Perhaps you could describe how you manage the tall fescue and maybe there would be some things to prolong it into the summer months.

Yard Doctor, My husband aerates in fall and reseeds fescue then. He fertilizes in fall and spring. Lime goes down in the fall also. Can we just broadcast bermuda seed and water it and it come up or do we need to aerate first?? He is afraid if he aerates now it would kill what fescue is left. We haven't watered much due to the drought and water restrictions. The other times of year we usually get an adequate amount of rain so we rarely water then. Thank you, Judy

weigojmi, The "heat tolerant blue" is nothing more than 3 different types of TTTF (about 94% of the bag) and Hybrid Bluegrass (about 5%) (1% weeds seeds) which is a cross between Texas Bluegrass and Kentucky Bluegrass. The hybrid bluegrass looks just VERY much like most Tall Fescues. It doesn't have the fine blades, the dark green color, and density of Kentucky Bluegrass. A few of my neighbors have seeded that blend for a few years, the results are disappointing in my opinion. It makes a decent turf, but not dense enough or dark green. The real Kentucky Bluegrass grows well in your area with the proper care, so why bother with the "wanna be" kentucky bluegrass. There's a McDonals off of I-85 from Charlotte via Spartanburg, SC, located in Kings Mountain, NC; the entire lawn is Kentucky Bluegrass. It looks wonderful, always green. Of course, they have irrigation and a Lawn care company caring for the grass. I'm not a Nascar fan either, but I watch it from time to time. I'm, however, a Formula 1 fan, Rally, and MotoGP. Back to grass talk, the solarization sterilization process is used in Bermuda Sod Farms to intruduce a new type of bermuda grass in the existing site/soil. I've never done it, so I don't if it will work or not. I have, however, used roundup and a tiler to succesfully get rid of any bermudagrass. I did wintness once one of my neighbors dig a section (about 5x5) of bermuda infested fescue sod to about 4 inches deep, the replace with new fescue/bluegrass sod. That was 3 years ago, today that area (which I remember well because it's near his mailbox) has not shown any signs of bermuda coming back - it's all fescue and bluegrass. Toni, right, except that we never, ever reach 105. We only get to 100 about once in 5 years. But from mid-June through mid-September, we'll go above 90 every day, and July and August, at least 95 every day, with night temperatures falling only into the high 70s all that time. We've not had a night below 70 since May. 74 tonight. So we normally get a big growth flush in early June, then no growth at all until about now. Under our summer conditions (unlike in the North, where you get breaks from the heat now and then), plants which use the C3 photosynthetic method (citrus are prime examples) barely break even on their energy collection balance. Photorespiration, a process which uses the photosynthetic machinery, but which wastes energy, becomes a serious drain on energy resources when temps are high and in bright light. So trees (not just citrus, also the pecans, magnolias, etc.) in our type of climate make most of their net carbon gains in the spring and fall, and therefore, that's when the tree has enough energy to actually grow. The high night temps add to the problem, in that they keep the "normal" respiration rate high, burning off even more energy. Plants which use the C4 pathway, such as sugarcane, corn, sorghum, redroot pigweed, Johnsongrass, just grow faster and faster, as it heats up. They love high temps, as long as they have adequate water. That's because they do hardly any photorespiration. But the C3 plants (99.6% of the earth's species, and almost all of our commonly grown crops) really are not well-adapted to growing during such weather; rather, they are adapted to surviving it while waiting for cooler temps.

i would do it when the leaves turn color.. meaning the leaves are shut down ... and ready to fall off ... late summer.. means you will waste a month or two of the leaves making food ... for storage they will continue to grow roots until the ground freezes .. or perhaps all winter for wherever you are in z6 ... some suggest you plant oaks in spring.. so root work might be better in early april or so ... maybe earlier for wherever you are ... Technically, there should be no problems with letting fescue go dormant (for going brown definitions of dormant; if memory serves, fescues don't have a good dormancy mechanism for the crown). 1/4" every 2 weeks for a maximum of 4 weeks (after which it absolutely needs much more rain) should be sufficient to keep it alive, and allow it to restore itself in fall when the rains resume and temperatures drop. If you were a heavy or very frequent waterer before withholding it, that can cause problems, so back off slowly just as you would when weaning the new lawn off water after planting. If you were already watering once a week or so, simply stop. The lawn's already adjusted. The whole problem with the above is that Bermuda flourishes on far less water and far more heat than fescue ever will! In that case, you have to keep an eye out and remove or kill off the Bermuda when you see it, otherwise it'll take over the lawn and kill the weakened, sleeping fescue in no time flat. For us northern folks, crabgrass and Zoysia are famous for doing the same. If you have a patch where that's often an issue, perhaps you could keep that patch active for the summer and let the rest of the lawn go, at least until you can control the Bermuda?

Yard Doctor, We purchased some Sahara Bermuda seed today and was wondering if you think that would be ok? We didn't know how to tell if it was common bermuda or not. Thanks, Judy

Dear Pretty petals,

Thank you very much for your inquiry. The Sahara bermudagrass is a common bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon). The aeration would help in getting bermudagrass established, but would not be absolutely necessary. This grass will spread on its own, and you are not going to have a perfectly full lawn this first season anyway. This is more of a two year project.

It will be important to continue the practices for the tall fescue. Also, the bermudagrass is not something you try and then forget. It will stay in this yard forever. Make sure this is what you want.

I am living in Ga and have a fescue lawn. I have several large dead spots in my yard and have not been able to get anything to grow in them when I seed those areas. I had the soil tests done and all of the nutrients are there but I never get any results. I'm not sure if I am overwatering. any sugestiongs?
