hibiscus pests

I have a rather largely potted hibiscus. From a distance, it looks very healthy. However, upon close examination, there are a couple of problems: 1. Some leaves are turning black at the base; 2. Most of the bulbs are now getting dried up, with little black spots accompanied by a tan powdery substance; 3. The leaves are green, but are they supposed to have a rough feeling?

I do not like chemicals, hence my moniker.

It sounds like Botrytis (aka grey mold). Take a look at the pictures on this link - it has some great info for identifying all kinds of Hibiscus problems.

Botrytis blight or Gray mold, Botrytis cinerea.
This disease is an occasional problem, especially when the plant is in flower. Infected flowers develop tan, papery patches and are often covered with gray, fuzzy masses. Senescing flowers are particularly susceptible. Tan to brown spots with a target-like appearance can also develop on the leaves. These patches are often associated with flowers which have dropped onto the leaf surface.

Good sanitation practices including grooming the plants and removing spent or senescing flowers can minimize the potential for infection. These affected tissues should be carefully removed and discarded when they are dry. It is also important to avoid wetting the flowers when watering and crowding plants. Adequate spacing between the plants can promote good air circulation. Control can also be achieved with the use of fungicide sprays applied as soon as symptoms are visible. Among the compounds registered for use in Connecticut are potassium bicarbonate, mancozeb, copper hydroxide, and thiophanate-methyl. Consult the label for dosage rates, safety precautions, and indoor use.

what should i use for fertilizer on these vines. they are producing flowers constantly but the leaves are turning brown and falling off. what should i do to restore these plants back to health? thanks for any info i can get.

I had the same problem last year - and it was from catepillars. I checked my plants often and flicked the little buggers off. They also hit my passionflower vines, but these I let go - the butterfly's they turn into was worth a little damage and the vine had so many leaves, I didn't mind some damaged. I think the caterpillars were hairy, black and brown/red stripped. They did hit in the late summer though, not in the spring. Barb

Could've also been sawfly larvae. Check the underside of an affective leaf. I only handpick, but it was without a doubt a tedious year doing that. Although it might be too late now, keep it in mine for next year. It seems to get worse every year in my garden...

Thank you! That is very helpful. This has been a bad year for pests for us. I've had scale, mealies and aphids more than ever! I want to blame my next door neighbor - he's seasonal (Germany) and won't let anyone spray anything, even organic and bee safe sprays. Weeds and pests are wild over there. He's the guy who even planted dandelions. He tried to tell me they can be eaten. I told him I was from Appalachia and I know you can eat them and make wine, but we don't grow it as a crop! Oh well, I'm probably being unfair. I do practice safe spraying. We are on a bee migration flight path.

there are lots of annoying green worm pests that get into my buds not sure the best option for treating them...likely if you can get them as eggs before they burrow that would be best. likely something akin to cutworms...

Hi,

I have multiple fuzzy green caterpillars with dark stripes on the bottom of the caterpillars eating all of the leaves. What are they?
