Maybe you're just in a bad cell???

Actually, some of us gardeners or writers or garden writers go on vacation from time to time, and some of us even forsake our computers for mountain trails instead of garden paths. I shall be getting back to the straight and narrow very soon.

Dawiff, I am thrilled you checked Druse out and found him to be a worthwhile read. One of my favorites that has yet to be mentioned is "The Natural Shade Garden" where he not only examines the differences in the different degrees and definitions of light, ie shade, full shade, part shade, ect in a way that is clear enough for the beginning gardener but also explores how to modify shade with a pruning primer early on in the book. In my opinion he has the rare talent which Rick Darke does as well of understanding natural light in the garden. I have always wondered why landscape designers have not included the capturing of natural light by plants being as important as the fundamentals of spatial definition, proportion and scale, form, pattern, texture, tone, and color. Ginny, SoooÂ. when are we getting together to write our book?? I couldnÂt agree with you more regarding the "Well Tended Perennial Garden" it is much like Allen ArmitageÂs books an invaluable reference but nothing beyond that. I find that gardening much like I imagine cooking, would to be more of an art than a science, yes both depend heavily on science but the art of gardening does not end with the knowledge of any particular plants needs to thrive. Chelone, Wow, what a well written description of your journey as a gardener. A border that initially APPEARS natural, but one that only those who know their plant material will realize is partially contrived and conceived by a humanoid. Low maintenance and easy care go hand in hand with an understanding of the locale one wants to plant. This has been a long time goal for me but all too often I find myself stuffing some new cultivar that I just had to have in the mix and it stands out like a hooker at a debutantes ball. I also struggle with transitional plantings between the woodland and more formal cultivated areas. Ellen, I have learned over time to be more of an observer and less of a control freak on my property. I watch for what grows naturally on the property and take my cue from that, incorporating those plants into my landscaping and allowing them to flourish - within reason. I do a lot of weeding out of the "bad" stuff and watch for "good" stuff to seed in. It's amazing what will grow if you allow it. I have been attempting to encourage some native grass to take over in some areas and have found mowing to be more successful as the grass doesnÂt mind it and the other native ground covers are stressed, unhappy and hopefully will eventually not return. Dtd I need to figure out how to create a seating area there that does not look like it was "installed" - tricky since there is no native stone in this area other than irregular cobbles. What would you think of a driftwood trunk? You might even convince your workmates to give up some space on board so you can bring home driftwood from afar!!!!

One of the great things about gardening is that it can teach you so much about yourself! For instance, for a long time I favoured putting soft pinks and mauves and delicate lacy whites together. I still do a lot of my baskets that way. My husband told me he would like me to put in planters with "a riot of color" in them - to be bold and mix all colours together. Of course I told him I preferred to match them and coordinate them. Then I started to experiment - after all I like the colour red a lot and I figured since mother nature puts all her colours together why shouldn't I. The result was that I started to like to really like the "riot of colour" my husband was talking about. One example is a favourite of mine - Gallardia, or blanket flower - I have never come across any single flower that is so perfect in orange and red - It reminds me of a perfectly constructed work of art, and each one pops up so effortlessly in the garden, and takes my breath away as it does. So I made a perennial garden - with bold oranges, pinks, reds and yellows in a mass profusion - with those adorable favourites of mine "Nasturtiums" too in every colour imagineable. Then Tony, my hubby, decided to plant a rose garden (like the one we used to have before we had our kids) and one day I asked him "What's your favourite rose?" - to my surprise he said "Double Delight" the two toned pink one - with the gorgeous scent. First of all, I didn't know he would care that much about scents, and second he has often told me that he's not so keen on pink. So now, we're both contented in our garden, with a combination of masculine and feminine all over the place - each with its own special niche, each adding to the overall look. Our pond has just been finished and the rocks around it contrast so fittingly with the soft and fragile look of the roses. I love to dig my hands in the dirt, but I can never push a huge wheelbarrow of it myself. My husband can prune, but he wouldn't have my patience with dead-heading all the flowers. I think gender is in the garden - it's everywhere we look, and we should take it's example. Like nature, we too need to value and embrace the male and female sides of our true selves, why should we ever be afraid?

Soon Hotpink will be wearing black as, sadly, I must attend a funeral in the UK.

SoÂ..provided itÂs not my ownÂÂ IÂll be back, inshallah, in a few weeks to post "something interesting" as Eric suggests, at risk of completely ruining my recently gained reputation as a pure upstanding writer at garden web, and thus any chance of future references from you guys. I had actually, for some time been coveting a cherished dream of a next occupation as a "hospital matron".

ÂÂHopefully, on my return, that floozy red hisbiscus of mine that is teasingly thrusting out buds by the dozen Âand no flowers as yetÂ. appears to be taking over the perennial bed. IÂm hoping she wonÂt require a king size when I returnÂ for all her carryings on, bless her sweet soulÂ. a galÂs gotta earn a livinÂÂ.

A real mystery to me is why there is not much instigation, it is much easier to rain on someone elses parade than to stand at the head of it holding something of interest. It is a risk, for sure. Did he spell it right? was the grammar acceptable? and so on. As far as I know there are no prizes for the best item written on this garden writers forum and yet there is a holding back, call it lurking a fear that what is written may not be appropriate. I know that Eric has strong opinions and a good sense of 'garden' as do many who lurk here, so instead of waiting for someone else to put a foot wrong why not jump in youself?

Well,I guess it's really NOT a mystery to you, you've posed and solved it in one sentence.

I haven't posted to this forum (until now, as far as I can remember) because I say to myself, "You're not really a garden writer, you can't post there".

Interesting topic, though. I'll be back when there's more time and less heat in New England. That'll be soon.
