First batch of tomatoes -vs- subsequent batches

So I've noticed that the first round of tomatoes from a plant aren't as good as the ones picked a bit later in the season. The first batch always seems more bland and mealy to me.

The Black Ethiopian I'm growing this year is a good example. The first few tomatoes were dryish and actually a bit hollow inside... almost like those 'stuffer' tomatoes. Later tomatoes from the same plant were great. Not hollow and very juicy.

I've been consistent with my watering and the weather has been pretty much the same for a couple of months.

Anyone else experience this? Is this common? What would the cause be?

Thanks!
