My last one I bought a couple of weeks ago was a heliopsis helanthoides, False Sunflower. It really brightened up the red flame acanthus and the black and blue salvia I planted it near. Don't know how long it will bloom, hope it goes at least till mid fall.
I was at the HD today with my daughter helping her find something to put in the pot on her apartment patio, and they had so many things I'd like to get. My problem is, I'm out of space, and it's too dang hot to be planting now.

I bought some pentas a couple weeks ago to replace the snapdragons that had finally started to look ratty. I planted them between my daylilies just outside my front door. They are looking really good - seem to have gotten themselves established. Hey, I'm always willing to head out to the local nursery - never know what I might find to stick in one of my containers.

Not exactly a color plant but I have just tried elephant ears for the first time in a planter with other annuals that have color and I'm in love with this plant. The ears get huge! I've got a kind whose ears are "born" green and then turns black over a couple of days time, almost like being watercolored by the suns rays. I say "born" because of how new leaves emerge. It's fascinating! This plant has a maroonish red stem topped with a black ear. The stem separates and a green furled leaf peeks out, pushing out more and more, until it emerges with its own stem, the ear unfurls green and then turns black. Later, a week or two, the stem of that newer leaf bulges, cracks open, and a new leaf peeks out, startig the process over again. The process is a bit like those Russian stacking dolls, dolls within dolls, but each ear is a bit bigger than it's "mom ear". I see that you're zone 5 Ma - I got this plant at Andrew's in Amherst.

All of these are great deals! But I may have gotten the deal of a lifetime. Last year after Christmas I was in a big box store when several TC caught my eye. Of course I was hoping for an after Christmas deal and I found one. I brought a plant over to the cashier and asked the price. Her voice and face shower great surprise "2 cents!" There were 8", 6", and 4" pots. I'm not going to tell you how many I bought for my 56 cents! Talk about a problem trying to sneak them into the house without DH catching on. Andy, I'm zone 7 but don't think there should be that much of a difference as we are both protecting our plants over the winter. Not a basjoo but my Himalayan (Musa sikkimensis) bloomed a few summers back. Last summer was a dud so bananas were off, this summer we had extremely dry conditions and I didn't even put them into the hot, dusty ground (now it's raining and raining!) But to get back to your question, mine bloomed with a heck of a lot fewer leaves than 20-25--maybe 8 or fewer of those enormous leaves on an 8 foot plant (have a pic somewhere I can post). It bloomed in September as I recall (a teacher wanted to bring it into his class to show the students how the bananas develop out a flower branches).--They kind of pop out suddenly those floral parts. Just keep watering and feeding! Good luck and post a pic if it does bloom.

Aunt Jen, Hope you come back here and see this reply to you! This might get a little long, but since every woman is different, I feel like you need to know MY circumstances. I always swore I would never take hormones! I was just going to tough it out. I am 47 and "think" I have been in perimenopause for almost 10 years. I was having super heavy bleeding and it had gotten to the point where I couldn't leave the house for a couple of days, and then it was 3 weeks on and one week off! ugh! My gyn had offered in the past for me to take birth control pills to help with the bleeding. Well I also had a tubal ligation 20 years ago and it just didn't settle right with me to take birth control pills. So I just kept "dealing" with it. Then last year it got bad enough that I was going to have a hysterectomy. I was all prepared, and my mother n law was diagnosed wtih Brain Cancer. My DH was the only caretaker living close by, so I knew I couldn't put him through caring for him dying mom and me trying to recuperate from a hysterectomy and still go to work everyday. So, my gyn and I decided I should try an endometrial ablation. It has been a miracle! I have not had one period in a year's time! woohoo! So I do still have my ovaries. Around Christmas last year, I started having strong heart palpitations in the middle of the night when I would get up to go potty. I couldn't believe that walking like 10 steps to and from the bathroom would cause such a thing, and I was convinced I was fixing to have a heart attack or something major! I went to a cardiologist, and convinced him to do a stres test on me, also a chemical one, and everything showed up fine. My blood pressure was up a little, so he put me on a beta blocker, but it's a low dosage. Then later in the spring, I started feeling sort of dizzy, light headed, like I might pass out...even had that feeling driving to church one morning...that really scared me! I just felt very strange and very wierd. And then at the same time, the hot flashes at night started...it felt like 20 times a night I was pushing the covers down, and then 5 minutes later pulling them back up because I was freezing. Not easy to sleep with all that going on!!! So, it got to the point, I was not getting much sleep, and then during the day, the wierd head feeling( i was convinced I had a brain tumor) was keeping me from functioning. I found myself waiting for my hubby to get home from work, and then asking him to drive me to Walmart or to the grocery store, etc...becaue I was too scared to go by myself, for fear of passing out somewhere. It was awful! Then, I had a breakthrough thanks to ThatHOmesite! There is a menopause message board on here, and I started reading threads there and OMG! There were threads about, wierd head feeling, palpitations, feeling like you are going to pass out...and most of these women were right around my age!!!! I couldn't believe it! So, I printed all those things out, and took them to my gyn at my annual checkup in June. I talked to her about it, and she knew I had never wanted to take hormones, and she was also concerned about be taking them so that they didn't start to build up the lining of my uterus that she had ablated. So she recommended I go to our compounding pharmacy and get a saliva testing kit...it was $170 out of my pocket, but I was so desperate, it was worth every penny! So I spit in a tube, and mailed it off to Oregon. A couple of weeks later, the results came back in and my hormones were WAY out of whack AND my adrenals were exhausted. So to answer your question...=), I am on a progeserone/estrogen cream that I use twice daily right now. This cream is made just for me according to my results. There is also a long questionnaire that you fill out about all your symptoms. I am also on DHEA and adrenal forte, to get my adrenals working the way they should again. I started all this about 6 weeks ago, and the difference it has made in my life has been life changing! I would say I am at least 50% better already, maybe even 75% and I feel so much stronger during the day, I have actually been able to start exercising. Couldn't even do that before! The hot flashes at night have all but gone away...there might be a couple sometime, but they are very mild and I seem to fall back asleep easier than I was. I still wake up during the night now, for what reason I don't know. I am going to try cutting out all caffeine, even though I don't consume much of it anyway. But it came down to quality vs. quantity of life for me, and I wound up choosing quality. I have seen my 91 year old mother, be miserable, with not much quality of life, and I just decided I would rather enjoy my life now, instead of just trying to go for quantity of years and be miserable later. I am still trying to take care of myself, in fact, I feel like doing that now where as before the hormones, I really didn't care! So I hope this somewhat helps you. Sorry it took so long to explain, just wanted you to know my own situation. You have to decide what's best for you!

3 bamboo muhly, 2 eleagnus, 3 yarrow, 2 pavonia, 1 Pride of Barbados and 2 back & blue sage. 50% off...wooohooo!

Then it started raining again- perfect.

Oh, and 3 artemesia at $1 per gallon pot.

The las t plant I got was a Passion flower that I dug up that I found next door on some property for sale. We bought 11 acres in march and have found all kinds of things growing wild out here and the Passion Flower was one of them. I can't wait to get it planted to grow up onto my patio I am building.

Summer Phlox "robert poore", Russian Sage, Rose "memorial day". Now that the heat is on, I think I will plunge them in their pots.

Red Raspberry Butterfly Bush, Joe Pye Weed, Bat-Faced Cuphea. Hopefully their roots will get established before the real heat arrives (and I can't believe I'm saying that on July 23!!).

My friend gave me a copper plant a few days ago. It is a beautiful bush. Looks just like the leaves in the fall all changing colors with reds and coppers. Nice little whispy flower spikes too. I had never seen it before.

I bought 3 different types of Colius. I've never been fond of them, but the Nursery had such a beautiful selection I couldn't resist.

I couldn't help myself. I was at a nursery yesterday and bought a Red Emperor Sedum, three John Fannick phlox and a red penstemon for my garden. They were all on sale.

2 BB salvias and a 'Dallas Red' lantana.
Now I know that lantanas are perennial, last year I tore them out. Oops :)

I didn't mean to get more, I just went for fence pickets and a coupler for my hose.

I hope the last plant I bought(coreopsis)isn't the last plant I'll get. I'm looking forward to making a lot of nurseries very financially happy for many years to come!

new in texas - Doesn't it always go that way? :-) I just ordered muscari, paperwhites and summer snowflakes. Haven't gotten them yet, though. The last plants I've gotten that are here and planted are a potted bougainvillea, white cyclamen and mona lavender or plectoranthus.

Home Depot Landscape Supply is closing, so everything is at least 20% off. I got some fertlizer for 40% off and roses, abelia, varigated privets, mulch, garden soil, and potting soil for 20% off.

The store I went to is in Plano, 121 and Custer, but there are other stores in the DFW area.

I am so sad about HDLS closing. There is on so convenient to me - I usually go in there once a week. The only thing that will make up for it is if a native/organic nursery moves in like a Redenta's or Green Mamas. That would make me very happy!

plano soc---HD has an ad on craigslist about all of the landscape stores closing. I need more mulch so I really need to head over there.

Not to get off track here last week I got two summer phlox and a pink turks cap to bad it's nearing the end of warm weather but they'll be there next spring really to fill up my garden. Still have lots to do before really cold weather gets here.
I've also be very busy buying daylilies online boy I got hooked on them beauties :)
I just wish I could sleep through the winter and wake up in spring to see all the flowers blooming. It's going to be sooooooooooo boring with no flowers to look at and no work to do in the yard. I could play catch up on house work and I don't mean weekly chores I'm talking down on your hands and knees dig out the old stuff to give away or throw away if it's trash. I need to clean / clear out the garage so we can park at least one car in there LOL.

BTW, I don't know how those peeps in the north handle such long winters, I'd go nuts stuck inside for long or make that drive DH nuts HEHEHE.
I've already started making blankets for GK's for christmas, if I'm not doing anything I'm not happy :)

Just received an order from High Country Gardens - penstemons, agastaches, coreopsis, salvias, yarrows, nepeta and some other things that I can't spell! I hope to plant them in the morning, we have a chance of rain tomorrow!

Just received my Abies equi-trojani (Trojan fir) from University of Idaho!!! They look GREAT! And, they're in the ground - ALL FIVE. Have some 'Enchantment' linaria coming from Park seed. They said they were shipped, but I've since seen some bad comments about Parks - we'll see.

Hi, I see some fellow Plano growers on this thread. Maybe we were at Home Depot at the same time. I also see tht someone is growing Joe Pye Weed. Mine died so maybe I did something wrong. Do you have good luck with them here? A MN favorite of mine. As far as planting and last purchases, I took almost a week of vacation and am replanting everything. My husband tilled up a bunch of new space on our tiny lot, we made two trips to the city compost site for truckloads of compost, dug, planted, trimmed trees, moved grasses and everything else, put in our antique pump that now actually has water running from it into an old cattle tub, (aquarium pump), put up the antique school bell, blah, blah. Bought ferns at Home Depot that are still in their pots waiting on me to finish with daylilies. I am bruised, scratched, bitten, sunburned, sore and enjoyed every moment of it. Now back to work which will be restful but not nearly as much fun. The rain is perfect for all my transplants but boy, the soil is wet. Sure appreciate this forum and all the wonderful postings that are extremely helpful. Susan

Glad this one popped back up! Saturday (which I told my son was 'celebrate my payday') I bought a beautiful prayer plant, before that on 'celebrate hubby's payday' I bought a small dark rubber tree, and dark(almost brown)syngonium. I'm very happy! Today is lovely and cool, raining, raining, raining-my type of weather.

Wow JD, you are growing a nice evergreen forest!

I got a black night canna and native red columbine and my bulb order just came in. I found the blue and white anemones that used to grow at my last house and english bluebells.

tuberose, some palm trees including a Queen palm, an unknown banana, superdwarf cavendish, rasberry ripple salvia, pavonia, hoyas, white star autumn salvia, red star autumn salvia, Tx. Star hibiscus, rex begonias, gingers, one of those giant alliums-like THAT will live here!, daffodil bulbs to force, crinums including a burgandy and a variegated, another crinum dug from empty lot, lycoris bulbs-same empty lot, a bunch of brugs I didn't have, violets, mums, trailing lantana, butterball hibiscus, gold star lantana, some kind of flowering bush, caryopt. 'Black Knight', a bunch of pentas, blue salvias, walking iris, more crinums, a crested iris, and much, much more.
2 plant trades & a great clearance at Lowes. Can you say "get to digging?"

I came ' ' this close to buying a Fat Albert Blue Spruce from Blooming Colors in Grapevine last year - during the drought. They were big & beautiful. Saw one they had left at the end of the summer. It was burned badly on one side. They said that they had mixed success with them - some good, some bad.

I'm trying an Atlas Blue Cedar now. Got it at Lowes. It has dropped its needles on the lower 2/3rds, but the top is still going good. They are supposed to be tough to transplant.
