How does this search engine work on here?

I notice that a lot of newcomers here ask questions and are quickly referred to a previous thread and are "encouraged" to do a search in the future. IÃ¯Â¿Â½m a newbie on here and I also have lots of questions I want to ask but I try not to bother you "regulars" with my questions by doing searches. My "searches" have for the most part been very frustrating. Here is an example:

Today I did a search for "preparing garden soil for tomatoes"

There were 1541 matches for this topic! Am I doing something wrong in wording my search?

Here are some of the results of my searchÃ¯Â¿Â½and this was just the first page! Propagating a cactusÃ¯Â¿Â½gimme a break!

Ahhhh...A question I can answer.

If you use the search box in the green banner at the top of any page, you will get search results for the whole Garden Web site. To narrow your search to results from just the Tomato Forum, you need to use the search box found just below the list of threads on page one.

The results at the link below has a few threads that will hopefully help you some.

And don't include the word 'tomato' or 'tomatoes' when searching the tomato forum or 'pepper' or 'peppers' when searching the peppers forum or you get everything.

The search here isn't like Google. You want a very specific search here not general net-wide searching. So you want to use specific terms like "soil preparation" or "add to soil" or "add to garden" and leave out all the a, and, the, conjunctions.

But you can't rule out posts that come up on your search just by the title since people notoriously choose some really strange titles for their posts. For example, the post My Stupidest Gardening Mistake happens to contain lots of soil preparation info. :)

maureen, it seems that function hasn't worked since the change-over of GW to the new owner. i am amazed at how many searches i attempt, even to look for something i know i posted, and i don't get the match. i guess the site got improved in other areas??????? maryanne/earthly

I've had the same thing happen to me. I've also had search return partial results. For example, I've searched on my user name to find a recent post, but it was missing from the results. I've been meaning to report it, but I haven't gotten around to it until now. It would be good if everyone who's had this problem left feedback to the forum to try to get them to fix search. If they receive multiple problem reports, it will escalate the issue to the top of the bug fix list. I've added a link to the problem report form below. You've put a lot of thought and research into this so I would go for it. You will feel so much better. I know I am guilty of overthinking and hesitating because of a bad review or two. The appliances had the features I wanted so I will just deal (and maybe rant and rave) if there are problems in the future. Or maybe get an extended warranty on the DW if that will make you more comfortable.

I find it more helpful to use Google to search GardenWeb. You can limit a Google search to a specific Web site like this:
