Peruvian Daffodil - Ismene hasn't bloomed
Comments (3)On the eastern seaboard, Ismenes tend to be sporadic in their blooming because of erratic rainfall patterns; they're used to very definite wet/dry seasons, such as in a Mediterranean climate. 'Sulfur Queen' is the only selection that blooms fairly reliably for me in the ground. Festalis and 'Pax' bloom pretty well if the bulbs are either grown in pots and stored dry on their sides for a few months or lifted and stored for the winter, but just make big clumps of foliage when left in the garden all year. I've also found that for most amaryllids deeper planting keeps the bulbs from splitting as much, which in turn promotes flowering (since the plants can't reproduce vegetatively, they attempt seed production), but this may not be true of this group of Hymenocallis....See MorePeruvian Daffodil, Spider Lily, Hymenocallis festalis - Invasive?
Comments (4)Cora, are you thinking of Crinum pedunculatum? That is a different plant - leaves grow pointed and upright. Overall it is a much "tougher"-looking plant. They are planted all over by the city at the beach. Link to images below. Peruvian daffodils are softer and more gentle-looking. They have leaves similar to an amaryllis or agapanthus. Comments (6)Jim and Carrie, I used to have a couple of other varieties of 'spider lilies', but they died out -- probably from the drought or whatever. Plants come and go sometimes. I looked them up on line and these are Hymenocallis festalis. For the price I decided to see what they'd do. If anyone decides to get them my advice is to plant them deep. The bloom stalks want to flop over during hot afternoons. Velvet pot mimosa blooms off and on all summer. I don't know why it isn't more widely available. It really likes all day hot sun. 'Lemon spots' are where 'plan A' didn't work so you go to 'plan B' as in "When life give you lemons make lemonade". I was so happy when I found out how well that idea works in life.
