last years bulbs

hello,my first post....well i have a few bags of tulip,crocus bulbs bought late last year and never got them in the ground im sure that happens to most of you once in awhile LOL my question is if i put them in this spring will they bloom next spring or am i just waisting my time and try again this fall... the bulbs look really good and have small sprouts i know they wont bloom this year but maybe next?? thanks alot and im treally happy i found this forum keith

You know that is funny........I just found a few bags of bulbs that I never got planted last year and I was wondering the same thing! I think I am going to give them a try, it can't hurt!

This is what I have always read, if I am wrong hopefully someone will correct me. Bulbs store all of their energy for this year's flowers in one season. So, that means that if you don't plant them, they will use up all of their energy and not be viable next year. I think you are better off planting them in a cool spot so that the roots have a little chance to develop as much as possible and hoping for the best.

I have not grown them, but would like to. I saw a great specimen at the Garfield Conservatory in Chicago. It was grown in the cactus room, with high (>85F) -low (40F,dry) temperatures typical of agave, aloe, oleander, and sedum. Humidity was low and sunlight was high. Next to it was a smaller aloe specimen and some groundcover echinopsis, I think. Anyway, think the climate of San Diego or Italy/Spain and you should be ok. I would water well in the growing season and give it cool rest like a nobile-type dendrobium. Humidity isn't an issue, but if you could keep it shletered, leave it outside in the fall-dry but cool.

Most excellent, Lizalily! I've been wondering, myself, how I'm going to keep insects from devouring my hippis once I have all the pots outside... although, we do have a greenhouse on its way... so, I will most likely commandeer part of that for the hippis! It will be much safer than putting them out in the raised beds and worrying about moles and voles and flies and bugs! The trucking company just sent us a message with the delivery date and time for the greenhouse! We should have all the pieces in boxes delivered this coming Tuesday morning! I'm so excited! A real greenhouse! Yay! Now all we have to do is get Larry to put it all together for us! :-) I think building a raised bed and then using some sort of framing and screen-cloth material would work out good, Lizalily... your idea is a solid one!

My apartment is very small, being the upper floor of a house, and it's filled year 'round with houseplants, and now bulbs! It really does resemble a small jungle! I actually have some space in a heated kennel attached to a garage that I could use for some seed starting, but I like to keep everything close so I can constantly monitor progress and moisture... I think there may be enough room in here to jam all my seed flats together... last fall, I bough a total of 4 mini-greenhouses for seed starting and bulbs, and only have two set up... if I start my seeds in succession, I should have enough room to keep them going until it's warm enough to begin hardening them off outside... It's just a little crowded with 3 dogs, the husband, 2 computer desks, plus all the other normal things you'd find in a small apartment! It's really more of a studio apartment, having no separate rooms except the bathroom. I've already given up my crafting table to bulbs! What I need is to figure out a way to have shelves in front of the windows, and to invest in a better light set-up. I just need to save a little money for good lights. Actually, I've done fairly well with the small space I have... I envy those that live in the south, although I'm not sure I'm ready for hurricanes! The threat of tornadoes is quite enough to live with! Anna - your place probably looks much like mine in early spring! Flats and pots everywhere! Barely room to navigate through the house, or in my case, the apartment! But it's all so much fun and so rewarding... I wouldn't give up gardening for anything!

Hi, just a few days ago I spent about an hour googling and reading gardenweb, trying to find out if the daffodils I had left in my basement all winter could be planted now, or if it was pointless. I wasn't sure it was cool enough in the basement to give them the cooling period like people use when forcing bulbs. Except they wouldn't be forced to bloom early, they would be late, but who cares.

After much reading, I decided to give it a go. I should have just looked at the bulbs first. They were all sprouting and clearly ready to go. If your bulbs are sprouting, they want to grow and bloom. Plant ASAP! You should get blooms just fine, they just might not bloom as vigorously as normal next year, but they should be okay.

If you don't plant them soon, they will wither and die. They need to be in the ground to get energy for next year's blooms. Good luck

Myself, I'd plant them too, especially if they're showing signs of growth. Though I wouldn't count on them blooming. If they do bloom, all the better. Just remember to let their leaves go yellow before you trim them back this summer.

I agree with all of you, from what I can tell they will die if you don't plant them so you might as well give it a shot. You may want to fertilize them when they are up to give them energy, cut off the flower stems as they start to grow to send more energy to the bulb and not to the flower, don't cut the foliage back until they are brown. Just guessing.

If they were stored in a cold place, like a garage, they should grow and maybe bloom this year. They need about 6 weeks of cold weather, which is why you normally plant in fall.
