Looks like a wonderful place to go shopping Roselee. I love the mom and pop shops. Sometimes I go just to take a look around to see if there might be something I can't live without :o)

Barb, I agree. You find the personal taste, touch and integrity in the self grown, owned and managed plant nurseries and that goes for other businesses also. Schumacher's has had a loyal following for years and I just wanted to be sure other gardeners in the area know about it. You'll see weeds and maybe all the larger plants aren't perfectly shaped and pruned, but that doesn't bother me, especially at the 'wholesale' prices they ask.

Nightrider, it takes me about 25 or 30 minutes to get there from the Castle Hills area of San Antonio. I either go north on 35, turn left on 3009 (Garden Ridge) and then turn right on 1863; or go north on 281 and turn right on 1863 at Bulverde. The nursery is on 1863 and is not a much traveled road so it's a nice scenic drive. The nursery is on the left from either route.

They are closed Sunday and Monday.

By the way, I saw two more of the tropical orchid trees mentioned on another thread in case anybody is interested. They were larger plants in bigger pots and were in the long greenhouse on the other side of the big field of potted plants. They have flower buds.

thought Schumacher's was for wholesale only. Think it's time for me to go for a long ride, I can't resist plants and the more the better.

You all are so lucky to have a nursery like that nearby that sells nice plants at low prices. I went to a small town today since I wasn't doing anything hoping the little nursery there might be open but it wasn't so I remembered another place I had seen that sold antiques and they had some neat yard art stuff so I went there instead. I didn't find anything I could afford, lol but she had some great pass along plants growing and gave me some cuttings. I offered to buy them but she wouldn't let me. One is called redbird another unknown succulent and some yellow ice plant. It was worth the drive. I wish I had found the live lady bugs I was hoping to get from the little organic nursery. Oh well I know they have them in another town and I have to go there for a doctors appt. tomorrow anyway so I will get them then.

If anybody I know goes to Schumachers next week please pick up a $3.00 gallon pot of large leafed gray sedum for me. It is sitting on the right of the trail that leads to the green house. I meant to get it and forgot.

Love the pictures. Can any of you tell me a crossroad close to it. I'm not sure where 1863 is from me in Wimberley, but I can get there from 281, so a mileage distance from to 281 down 1863 or a crossroad would be better. I know theres a closer route for me to get there. Is it considered New Braunsfels area or North of it?

I tried going to Home Depot last week to look for some holly fern. Thought I was going to die in the heat.

I've even been avoiding Rainbow Gardens...(which is next to my house) Too hot. I'll probably faint while walking around.

apassiflora, using MSN maps I plugged in Wimberly to the address of Schumachers which is:

New Braunfels Tx 78132

They said it was 27 miles from Wimberly.

I tried Google maps, but they gave me directions from Wimberly Arkansas! Perhaps with a physical address in Wimberly Google might do better, but we've gotten a couple of incorrect locations from them.

Once you turn near Garden Ridge, how far to 1863 ? Then how far from that intersection to the nursery ?

I think I'd like going that way instead of up 35.

Yes Patty, you kind of cut the corner taking 3009.

The Hill Country Map I have (love that map because it shows all the little FM roads) says it is 7.8 miles from 35 to 1863. The intersection of 3009 and 1863 is fairly large so you can't miss it. Then I'm guessing it's about five or maybe six miles to the nursery.

Just about the time you think you have gone too far you'll see it on the left. It's sort of around a slight left curve so you don't see it from a distance, but what you'll see first is the orange color of the Barbados Bird of Paradise blooming by the road.

Patty and all, if you blow up the map linked above it shows a Schoenthal Rd. veering off to the right near the town of Garden Ridge. That looks like an even shorter way to go. My Hill Country map is pretty old and doesn't show it. I will try it next time I go.

Sorry guys for so many posts on directions, but it is probably shorter miliage wise to take loop 337 off 35, but I got turned around coming and going one time so decided to take the more scenic route.

Well, here's my version of directions.

From San Antonio I've found the fastest way to be straight 35 to Walnut Ave. in New Braunfels (this is also called 46, but while in N.B. there are two 46's. Take the one called Walnut and head north.) to... 1863 and it is just a short distance north and turn left. Schumacher's is just a hop away from that intersection on the right.

If you're coming down 281 from the north, then take the 46 exit for New Braunfels. It is a huge sign! Head left, south, to 1863, then take a right onto 1863 and it will be just a hop down on your right.

I've tried the country roads to get there from S.A. and they take much longer than the 35 route. I'm a fan of country roads but not if they add 30 minutes to the drive.

Roselee...guess I beat you there! I was there Friday even before the trailers rolled in with the plants! I throught the Desert Willow was so pretty...just wish they'd had some a bit smaller.
