PF advice

Help! I think every caterpiller in Texas has found my poor Passion Flower vine and my husband wants to spray it. I was expecting cat's and even welcomed the first few but when does it stop? There are, literally, more than 50 eating every scrap of my once beautiful 6 foot vine. Does it stop? I'll relocate all the cat's I can but I'm pretty sure if I can't tell him this is a spring deal and soon it will be over he's going to spray.

I know what you are talking about...I wanted so bad a butterfly garden...what I didn't understand is that the catapillars eat everything in sight...I mean my plants were practically decimated...I will tell you this though...I saw a big lantana that at one point had about 200 butterflies on it...It was an amazing sight...

Tell you husband to stay his hand with the sprayer, and do not try to relocate the caterpillars. They are most likely Gulf Fritillarys (a lovely orange butterfly) that use the passion vine as a host plant. The vine will recover. Our two year old vine was reduced to a few strings, no leaves, and it recovered nicely.Have pity on the Frits! If you plant Greggs Blue Mist (Boneset) nearby, you will have a host/nectar habitat for the butterflies.

I've had a Zephyr Breeze II hood (400 cfm) for a year, and I like it. Yep, it's loud - but I'm so happy to have a hood that vents outside, I'm not complaining. I don't find that the controls or the front of the hood get greasy - because that crap is getting sucked outside. I love the light it provides.

That's so funny because I, too, was looking through old posts this morning. My DH is out golfing and I thought I would work in my paint room. Problem is there is a sale at Hobby Lobby and Michael's has American paint on sale - my favorite so I have to take a little trip. I use a rake or comb brush. Michaels has them - Soft Grip - $2.99 each. They come in several sizes, 1/4", 1/2". The trick for me is to thin the paint a bit, load my brush and touch lightly on a paper towel. Then start your beard. I usually start at the bottom and work my way up. Press lightly to begin with and reload as necessary. I always undercoat with a darker shade, i.e., dark gray base, medium gray with the rake brush, then white with a very little amount of gray for the final. Sometimes I will come back in and pull in a few curls with the liner brush. With the flamingo I used the angle brush to stroke in the basic shapes, the rake to put on the really thin feathers and a liner to complete the single thin feathers. With the flamingo I started with a mix of alizarin crimson and white to make a dark pink, added more white for the next layer and finished with very thin lines of white. The flamingo was on the cover of Paintworks in November by Willow Wolfe. For roses I use an angle brush which was actually called a rose brush for a long time. The angle makes it easier to stroke the petals. I have containers full of brushes but I find myself painting with the same ones all the time. Soft grip also has angle brushes for the same price. Granted, they may not last as long as others but for the price I think they do a great job and I really have not had a problem with mine. I double load a lot but for the Santa I side load when doing the shading and again when applying a highlight. After washing my brush thoroughly (I use lava soap and water), I will dip them in alcohol and pat them on my palette to see if there is any paint left in the ferrell. The alcohol will break down the acrylic paint. I do this several times until I am sure I have a good clean brush. I then wash it again with soap and water, blot it and run the hairs across the soap. The soap will dry on the bristles and help keep their shape. Make sure to wash rinse your brush before painting your next project. I am happy to give you any help I can. My husband says I have so much information in my head that I just can't contain it. Maybe that is why people run from me when I go into the paint section of Michael's. I am always trying to get people interested in painting - if I could just get them to understand that this is something anyone can do, like most things it just takes a little practice.

Adapting a modulating, high efficiency boiler to an old system can be tricky. For starters, you need a heat loss estimate for the house and you need to determine your room heat exchanger capacity (radiators/convectors/hydrofoils). The latter needs to be done zone by zone if you have a zoned system. Is your baseboard fin-tube convectors, cast iron radiator or something else? Honestly, if you can use a low mass boiler, I'm biased to a system that uses the same boiler for DHW with an indirect tank. It simplifies and cuts down on maintenance costs. You can probably get a rebate on the indirect. Besides, are you gong to take a shower in a freezing cold house? With a small house and a low heating load, it can be hard to get a small enough boiler that produces enough DHW. (You might be thinking that argues for a separate water heater. Maybe, but there are other solutions.) Getting a system with lots of small zones matched to a boiler large enough to heat the whole house can be tricky as well. If zones are not needed for comfort, a good system designer will combine zones sometimes when installing a modulating, HE boiler. Probably the paramount thing to keep in mind that to get anything out of the condensing ability of a hight efficiency boiler, the return water needs to be quite low temperature. That is most easily attained with cast iron radiators and excess radiation capacity so water temp can be held at a minimum. If you have an old house with lots of window and insulation improvements, that is an easier target because radiators were probably not removed. If you have an old, leaky house with few improvements and with fin-tube radiators, it might not be worth installing a high efficiency boiler. They are more finicky, may not last as long, and you will get nothing out of it compared to a mid efficiency boiler.

H B - that is very generous of you. I will talk to my Mom and show her all of these ideas and see what she thinks. It makes me sad, how much she misses out on what's going on around her, but i'm also happy that her hearing loss can be helped well with these hearing aids. I have been developing hearing loss, myself. I told her I'm going to try hers when she gets them and see what I've been missing. When I had my practice, in-the-ear and in-the-canal hearing aids were "the thing" because no one wanted the bulky BTE's - I only fit behind-the-ear instruments to severely impaired losses because they had more power without feedback. Before computers, I had to open a flap on the back of the device and used a miniscule screwdriver to change the settings. Call me a dinosaur. Now, the BTE's are so slim and sleek and are so programmable there's no reason to wear ITE's. They are prone to so much trouble because of earwax and moisture. I can't even wear earbuds without irritation - who needs a bulky thing in their ear??

Marlingardener...does that mean they will eventually be done and look nice again? It may be that I just need to move it somewhere so that it's less noticably scavenged.

Here's an idea. If you have an out of the way place in your yard that isn't seen much, you could plant a second one. Then, when you see cats on your good plant you can move them to the other one. That way, you can foster the butterflies and still have your good plant to look at. I'd hate to see anybody spray butterfly larva.

The passion vine will recover, but every year you will have leaves disappear as the caterpillars eat them. Debndal's advice is good--plant another in a less conspicuous place. However, the butterflies don't always have the same esthetic values we do, and are likely to move in on both vines. But, with two to "nosh" on, you may have less depredation. Have you considered just enjoying the butterflies?

Marlin, it isn't that I don't enjoy butterflies it's that, on the advice from this forum actually, I planted the PF in a very visable planter on my back deck as virtually the only greenery there. It was lovely for a bit and now is a mass of strings with a zillion cat's and a few leaves on it, which is fine as a host for butterflies but not so much as the lovely exotic I thought I was putting right outside my door.

Debndal, thank you...I did move the PF last night to a much less conspicious place and will look for another, less popular with wildlife, plant for my deck. I'm thinking a plumeria...

I agree, leave the cats. Get some more PF vine and put them in less conspicious places... my PF's look like crap by the middle of the summer but I love the butterflies so it's worth it.

Plumeria are great for decks...PF is a great plant but not one for displaying. Thanks for saving the cats. :)

Tess. I don't know what zone you are in, but I got a Spicy Compact Jatropha at HD (2-3' specimen) a few weeks ago and it's a great patio plant. Does well in sun or shade, lush foliage (tri-lobes) red clusters of flowers. It's not hardy in DFW so I'll have to *figure something out this winter* but it's soooooo pretty. So far, nobody is eating on it - I love it!
I've heard plumeria is host plant for Sphinx moths, so you might have a similar problem. I know the Sphinx moth cats decimate my pentas every year.

Wow, thanks for the heads up debndal...I'll definately double check the plumeria/moth issue! I'm in Austin but it will go in a pot so I'll also look at the jatropha.
