Can squash stand the Texas heat?

I started out this summer with 3 summer squash plants. I lost one early in the season, and just got my first squash off the second one yesterday (I admittedly started late). Well, later that day, I noticed that the second one had wilted - and wasn't recovering as evening neared. I took a close look at it and couldn't find evidence of vine borer damage, so I watered and hoped it would be better today. It isn't, so I pulled it from the ground and did an "autopsy" - split the vine all the way up. No bugs or larvae inside.

Could it have been the heat, or are squash plants pretty good about surviving in high temps?

Thanks,

Jennifer
