Here's our November Swap. In order to participate you must be a member of the group Our Bloomin Friends. If you want to find out about joining the group, please contact Shirley or Carol (or just post here and someone will notice!)

It's getting cooler and the days are getting shorter - time to curl up in a favorite chair and read a book! You will be sharing a book by a favorite author with someone in the group this month. The book does not need to new and can be paperback, but it must be fiction, not a reference book and not non-fiction, and not a children's book - something you think the member will read and enjoy, just as if she was picking out a fiction book for herself.. If the book involves gardens or gardening, so much the better, but that is not required. There are two other things you will send with your book - a bookmark (can be handmade or bought) - a Fall or Garden Theme would be ideal, but that type is not required - and some other little gift that relates to the story content of the book. These are to be small/inexpensive things. The swap is intended to be simple and inexpensive. For example if my book was Gone with the Wind I could work with the word "wind" and send windchimes or I could think about the drapes that Scarlet made into clothing and send a spool of thread or decorative buttons or something like that to represent her making the dress. If angels were a part of the story content, I could send any little thing with an angel design. Obviously the little object can be seeds or something relating to the garden if the story is about gardens or takes place in a garden. As for bookmarks, you can find sites online where you can print one out on cardstock, or just make one in another way, or simply purchase one.

There is also a game thrown into the mix here. Decide on your book and then post the name of the author with the letters scrambled, like the Jumble puzzles. Keep the multiple words separated so people have some chance of figuring out the name if they wish, but don't guess on the board. (The reason for posting the name is so that if you have read and saved every single book by the author and don't need another copy, you have some chance not to select it.) Just as an example, here is Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone with the Wind: Teramgra Themcill.

Everyone in OBFs who wants to play this month should think of the book you will send, scramble the name of the author and sign up here by posting the author's name scrambled. On November 15th, I will post a list of book/literary words and you can each select one, first come first served style. I will have already attached a number to each of the words and that will determine the order of picking. At that point, #1 will pick a book (by author's scrambled name), then #2, etc. You should mail out your book and other items to the person by Nov. 22nd with a delivery confirmation.

I hope all of this makes sense. If not, just ask. You will be sending 3 things: a novel, a bookmark, and some little item that relates in some way to the story in the book.

I will also be the hostess for December and the theme for that month will be "Sing the Bloomin Christmas Carol." It will include lots of holiday fun!

Just so all will know, I will be posting a list of words tomorrow (only 4 unless more people join) and you can select whichever one you want as long as no one else has posted that she picked it. (Watch the postings to see which words have been picked. I will take the last choice which is why there will be 4 words instead of 5.) Each word will have a number assigned to it and I will have that number and it will determine who picks first, second, etc. You will be picking which book you want to receive by the scrambled name of the author.

I sent an e-mail message to Maryanne. If I don't hear back from Maryanne, I will delete her book from the list since we don't know if she selected one to send or what it is. She hasn't posted since Nov. 1st. We hope to hear from you, Maryanne!

Hi All, I've been so busy. I made cookies and stuff all night after work and then I answered some email. I wasn't going to write anything tonight because I'm tired. I was ready to go to bed but I realized it may be awhile until I can post again. So I want to tell the story I promised before. 11 years ago in August, Gary's brother, Joe, died helping a motorist who's car had been hit on a major highway. He got struck by a motorcycle that was speeding and then a car driven by a drunk driver. It was as you can imagine was quite an awful time. We as a family decided to donate all of Joe's organs. We felt that he died trying to help someone and it is what he would of wanted. Thanksgiving with Gary's family wasn't the best that year of course. Christmas as far as I could see wasn't going to be much better. On Christmas morning Gary and I got up. He was watching tv, and I was reading the newspaper. I started to read the letter to the editor part of the paper. There was letter from a woman from NJ writing to thank the family who made the decision to donate the organs of the man who had died on the highway. At that point, I just started to whell up with tears and Gary of course couldn't figure out why the paper would make me cry. I tried to read out loud to him, but I couldn't get it out and by that time I was bawling. The woman's brother had received Joe's heart, and surely would of died. It was a wonderful thing she did sending that letter. We were very sad, but we were also very happy to know that people were alive because of him. It made a tough Christmas bearable. So the best gift we ever got cost no more than the time it took her to write a letter and the stamp to mail it. (As a side note,Gary's parents eventually found out about all the people(info without names) he helped. And they did meet the man who got his lungs and became friends with him. They also are active members in UNYTS, the local organ donor group. Also the next year Gary's sister had a baby, the first grandchild. There's nothing like a baby to help lift people's spirits.) Just perfect Melinda, that apron was meant for you! Couldn't believe I saw you post a pic on FB with that saying and here I had sent the package with that apron. Telepathy or something!!!! The jam I will send to you as an email once I jot it down. This was my first year making it, and it won't be my last. It's been a real winner. I have an insane collection of Santa's. He's the tallest one I have. My granddaughter sometimes calls him her pretend grandpop! I thought he was a beauty when I first laid eyes on him, and lo and behold, after Christmas one year, he was marked down by 50%, so I treated myself. Still more than I would have normally wanted to put out, but I think at that time, I had a bunch of money!!!!! He's a little over 5' tall. Shirley, why not take a different month? And I'll light a fire under Carol's butt....she's just coming back from her grandson's wedding, so it takes her a little time to get back in to the groove. I fell like I have been doing laundry all weekend...two loads to go for the wash and then i'm done for a few weeks or more. Got all the new Christmas clothes down for everyone, and everybody gets new sheets and stuff, aside from the regular dirty stuff, and i'm pooped. kitchen is clean, dog is bathed, i'm halfway there with my contribution for new years. this coming week i'll tackle my granddaughter's room...best to do that when she's at school. then it's time for the basement which I dread, but it needs to be organized, once again Well, hope everyone has a great New year celebration. We are heading up the mountains, probably the last time until the spring. Thank you all so much, prayers and thoughts are much appreciated. Still trying to let go of my job. It's getting much easier to forget about it. Today I went to pick up some items in my office turned on my computer and had 175 e-mails. It was a great relief to leave the office and let someone else worry about it. When the short term disability is over I will decide if I am retiring or not.

Jeanne-Wish I had books but I only listen to books on tape at work. Hope to read books again when I retire.

We spent the week-end at a cabin in Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge Tn and just got home. This has become a Christmas Tradition for my Family but we had to go early this year because so much going on the month of Dec.

Speaking of deals at Lowes, my Son loaded me down with tropical plants and only paid 25 cents a piece for each one. He lives in another town and the Lowes there really has some deals. I either miss the deals at our Lowes or they don't have such good deals.

Okay, there are five of us participating. It will go like this. There are 4 words below. You can pick any of them that have not already been selected so watch to see if someone before you has already picked that one. I have assigned a random number to each literary word or phrase. After the words are chosen, I will tell you the number and that is the order in which we will pick our book by the scrambled name of the author. So, this is step one:

If you can post the scrambled name of your author today, that will be fine. I will still include you and it is not a problem. I just need all the authors by the time we pick which one we want to receive - and that will take place beginning tomorrow. We would love to have you join in.

As for the word list:

I will wait until towards the end of today or tomorrow to post the order of selecting. Rose, if you get your author included in time you will be #5 to pick and then I will be #6 to pick.

Note to all in OBF: By the way, no one has taken a guess at the game my pup, Sydney, created for matching the dog with the appropiate book. If no one other than you takes a guess, you will be the winner with just one right, so certainly someone wants to do this! The way you play is to send your matches to me by e-mail. If I should get someone with all the answers right, I will post that. If not, we will wait until next Monday, the 21st, to see who has the most right (if anyone decides to guess) and then the game will be closed.

Oh, wow! I'm surprised! I actually had to guess on 3 of them. I had read alot of the books (absolutely LOVE Where the Red Fern Grows!!), so they were easier. I had help on the Odyssey.It's been years since I read that one, so I had my oldest read it & tell me the answer. :P

Jeanne, will be getting your book and other surprises together this weekend. I just can't be as quick as you guys. :( I work tomorrow but have the weekend off. We have our annual holiday tree lighting tomorrow night and parade Saturday morning. I just can't believe it is all here again. I feel I was just planting my garden. Where does the time go?

I am usually only quick on one thing a month!
I have many swaps that need to get sent out soon, some that need to be handmade, so it will be crazy around here, plus fitting in Christmas shopping for the many Christmas gifts that we need to mail, etc. Christmas parties begin on Dec. 1. I am starting to see why many people decorate early - it is hard to fit it in later on. We usually wait until a week or 10 days into December to put our trees and decorations. I am seriously thinking of putting up all except for the trees on the Sat. and Sun. after Thanksgiving. We'll see what my husband thinks of that idea. (Then to see if the puppy can resist all the Christmas stuff..)
I will likely post the December swap early - because I know everyone else is busy too. It will really be a fun one - Sing the Bloomin' Christmas Carol - so I hope all the members will join in.

We have always put up our tree on the weekend of Thanksgiving. Works out well for us although this year, I have to work both Saturday and Sunday and hubby and daughter both work on Friday so don't know when we will get a chance to go and cut one down.

My package is done and ready to go to the post office. I will be doing that in the morning if all goes as planned.

My son called me this evening and my dil was laid off from her job. The guy called her to tell her rather than waiting til she got in to work tomorrow. Didn't give a reason other than to say the company was going in another direction. This as the holiday season is approaching. My son seems more upset than my dil but of course, their finances depend on her income as well and my son is a bit worried. Dil is already planning her strategy for going job hunting in the morning.

I received a package from Jeanne today!
The book was by Susan Wittig Albert, "Indigo Dying". I haven't read any books by this author, although I've certainly heard of her!
To go with the book, Jeanne included some indigo colored quilting fabric, some parsley seeds & a container of allspice (since all of the books in the series revolve around herbs).
The bookmark is a Christmas themed one, made from different Christmas fabrics.
Also included in the package was a second book, "Goose in the Pond" by Earlene Fowler. I have read a few of this author's books (though not this one!) and have enjoyed them! This is a series in which all the books are named after quilt squares.

The prize for the game was a cute notepad with Christmas dogs on it. (Thank you, Sydney!)

got my package from vina today-- i'm so excited to read mcguire's mirror mirror! i loved wicked :) she also send very cool bookmarks-- advice from a bear and advice from a lake. so funny, i got my bf tshirts from that line last year for christmas LOL over it!! in other news i have not yet packed up my box for vina--- i severely puled a muscle in my back and have been drugged and immobile for almost a week. i wil try to get it out tomorrow but it is so crazy here it might not be til next week. i'm sorry vina-- i will make it up to you!

I received my package from Melissa yesterday. The book is 'The Gingerbread Bump-Off' by Livia J. Washburn. Looks like a REALLY good book. Melissa also included pumpkin scented tealights, a cute Christmas oven mitt, bookmarks with seeds embedded in them, a cute bookmark for the book, a felt leaf bag that had Godiva chocolate gems inside. I LOVE EVERYthing that you sent, dear Melissa. Thank you sooo very much!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
I received my wonderful package from Margo. The author was Fern Michaels and the book is The Nosy Neighbor. It sounds like exactly my kind of book! I just finished a Fern Michael's book called Christmas at Timberwoods. It's good if anyone is looking for a Christmas suspense story. I have only read a few of her books and not the one Margo sent. I got up with a very sore back today so it sounds like a good day to read.
Margo also sent some seeds, a card, a bookmark with information about hummingbirds, a notepad with my initial, a pretty bracelet that she made, and a pop up vase with a greeting card. Thanks so much, Margo!

oh i am so glad i am not the only late one! it was such a weird month-- ahhhh, vicodin and flexeril LOL vina, your box is all packed up and i'm taking it to the po tomorrow after class so you could even get it this weekend if randy the post office dude is on duty when i get there :)

Received my package from Mellen and the book looks really interesting. Can't wait to start reading it. Along with the book she included a bookmark that I just love. It has beads and a monogrammed charm and she also included CHOCOLATE. I love chocolate. A great package well worth the wait. Thank you Mary Ellen.

I see my list needed updating. Sorry I haven't been on as much as I would like to... the puppy is getting into more and more things so I have to keep a close watch on her and I don't get online quite as much.

Oh, Margo, I am so glad that it got there and you like what I sent. I had purchased the bookmark specially for you, but I had left it at my mom's house. Thus, I wasn't able to get it back until Thanksgiving day. Personally, I like that author, but her books can be kind of gruesome. Just couldn't figure out what else to send to go with the book so I am glad you like the chocolate.

I received Rose's box on Saturday. Opened on Sunday, and just now have gotten to the computer to post. What a weekend!!
