Anyone Else Growing Crosses?

I am fairly sure I have crossed Large Red Cherry with Hillbilly Potato Leaf and have also crossed HPL with Japanese Black Trifele. There is one more confirmed cross that I am still trying to determine the parentage of. I will post pictures when they blush.

Oh heck ya. Lets see there is Green Doctors mystery cross I'm growing out which has produced a really good f1 red, large cherry/plum shaped tomato. F2's from a pink RL beefsteak crossed with a yellow/orange PL beefsteak that are growing some good maters. But the best cross has come from my 'crazy cross' which involved Olena Ukrainian crossed with several different varieties from which I have found a really special pink cherry that has a slight grape shape to it with a nipple on the bottom. The flavor is a 10 out of 10, sweet but with an explosion of tomato taste as well.

No crosses that I made myself, but some interesting ones anyway.

Dr. Wyche X German Red Strawberry and a couple of folks growing it have the correct F1 but I don't know about mine yet b/c everything is late here.

Two F2 hearts from Reinhard Kraft in Germany, one green when ripe, one purple.

Four complex crosses from Dr. Randy Gardner which incorporate some heirloom varieties and excellent disease tolerances bred in.

And I'm very eager to see what all of them will show but am getting really concerned b'c to date I've had ONE ripe Sungold F1, many plants with small fruits, most with just blossoms and several with NO blossoms. And where I live first killing frost can be as early as the first week in September, so fingers crossed.

Damon, you know what your duty is with anything having to do with Green Doctors, knowing its parentage, LOL, or indeed anything else heart-like beyond that.

Cat....I think I stick to tried and true entirely too much. I think I should be trying to find something a little different to grow like you and Bill. I've never heard of guinea hen flowers. I do like toad lilies but I tried one and it didn't make it through my winter. I hope you will post photos later. Bill...I never saw a slug in my yard until last year. We had a lot of rain that wouldn't let up and they started showing up. Where do they come from, out of nowhere? [g] You remind me of me... when I can't sleep in the summer, I will get up and go out in my pjs with the flashlight and a paper cup and look for earwigs, which I hate! They seem to love me for some reason. Just the same I enjoy being out there at that hour. You get to see all the night creatures and some of the fragrant plants make the trip worth it. And if there is a moon out, a warm breeze and it's very quiet, it's almost magical! And you can't see all your mistakes at night. [g]

No, no saving, I did try adding yeast at the end - no luck. I've been having the worst time in the kitchen lately, I must be too distracted lately or something. I made some more this morning and though "perfect" what wasn't perfect - my oven temp, I had it 25 degrees too hot. I thought I remembered the temp from last time I made them until I pulled them out the oven, one pan burned and the other just overcooked. Sigh.

A few years ago I decided to try to grow my own produce, having grown up on a farm where we grew all of our own food. Since I live on a small city lot, there wasn't a lot of space, so I cut out more than half of my driveway and re-landscaped that area to be a garden/orchard. I put in a fence with espaliered trees (apples and cherries) on one side, along with a fig tree, all of which are pollenated by my own mason bees. I then built raised beds in different configurations and use those along with barrels and bits of open spots for all of my summer veggies, herbs and tea plants. I was fortunate this year to be able to can beets, tomatoes, green beans, blueberries, raspberries and strawberries from my garden. I eat strictly from my pesticide and chemical free garden all summer long, and sometimes well into the fall. I do try to winter over some veggies, but thus far haven't mastered it! I buy fresh tuna from the coast and can that to last all year as well. For the rest of my produce that I can't grow, I shop the local farmer's markets and get my eggs from friends that have chickens. My roasting hens come from a local farmer that butchers only twice a year, and also supplies me with cheese making supplies and fresh non-pasturized milk that freezes wonderfully. As I've gotten older, it has become more important to me to eat organic, chemical free produce. It feels better to eat healthier, and I enjoy being able to taste real food. What I can't grow or find locally, or for those occasional snack foods, I just head to the local Whole Foods. I also try to eat by the season, only those foods that are normally grown in that season, which tends to eliminate buying produce from other countries which may be less controlled regarding pesticide use. It's not easy to eat healthy, and does take a lot more prep (which should be much easier with the new kitchen!), but it's worth it to feel good and healthy. I think a lot of our current health problems are related to the diet that most Americans eat and I am hoping to counteract my bad genetics with healthy (albeit expensive) eating habits!

OK! I started a round of cuttings from just three roses, which I can easily tell apart without labeling. I ordered simple stick-labels, which should be coming in the next few days, so then I'll be able to take cuttings of others -- including 'Nouveau Monde'. As soon as I know how many I have that have rooted, I'll post the count in this thread. But it might not be for a month or two. I'll pass them on to anyone willing to pay for shipping. Mine still has buds that haven't opened yet, but I wonder how many will survive all the heavy rain we've gotten and will continue to get for the next few days. :-) ~Christopher

I'm growing several, the best is Lime Green Salad x Pink Ping Pong. It is providing many colors and growth habits as well as good to great sweet flavor. all the F2 have been large cherries,but larger fruit may show up in later generations.

High hopes for this one, but they don't go well together...
Lime Green Salad x Green Giant -- pretty much all of them (20 plants) have been spitters but I now have some interesting growth types to use as parents.

I have an unintended cross, which I suspect might be Cherokee Chocolate and Cuostralee. Last year, saved seed from CC turned up as large, deep red good tasting fruit. So it will be interesting to see what the F2 does this year. Nothing is blushing yet, but I've been checking on one early set tomato every day. I don't really expect any ripe ones for several more weeks.

I should have sowed seeds from the surprise F1 pack used last year to compare with this F2, but already had too many varieties going in.

Carolyn- Yes! I know you and I are huge GD fans and anything with its parentage could potentially be a good thing. Like the f1 mystery GD cross I grew out this year which was really great. Also I did find an excellent pink heart in my 'crazy cross' and em going to for sure grow some f2's out next year.

I wanted to generate a fair amount of seed for Mr. Brown's based on interest expressed this spring. So I sorted through my seed inventory from the freezer and came up with about a dozen seeds from about 10 years ago, the first seeds I had saved from this variety.

Well, what I got with only one plant on hand is obviously a cross. The plant remains indeterminate and regular leaf and has set an excellent quantity of fruits. However, the fruits are considerably longer than the diameter and have a large nipple at the blossom end. None have ripened as yet
so I don't know anything yet about color, taste, etc.

I'm a bit disappointed because past crosses in my gardens have never been at all positive. I have plenty of seed
from other generations of Mr. Brown's but now I wonder
if some of it might be crossed.

Hopefully something good will come of this.

Yes, you've made your opinion about the taste of Green Doctors very clear to everyone here. LOL

So what were the other parent(s) in the cross that might have contributed to the taste of the hybrids you made with GD? I mean the taste couldn't have been ALL GD.

And why did you even use GD as a parent since from the get go you've said you didn't like it at all? ( smile)

I thank you again for the genetic information you gave me, that I passed on, as to how a so called white tomato, in this case the variety Dr. Carolyn, could change to a green when ripe one viz Green Doctors.

And I see Hoosier has posted elsewhere, with pictures, about Golden Cherokee going back to Cherokee Green if I'm remembering correctly.

Evolutionarily maybe the trend is back to GWRipes. LOL

Some of those new hybrids that you posted above look really great. Are you plaaning to develop the ones you like best as OP's or are you also planning to develop some as F1's only as you did with Purple Haze?

Carolyn, with but ONE Sungold F1 fruit to taste is getting very worried about all her other varieties out there ripening before first killing frost. A few greenies but most with just blossoms and some with no blossoms at all and here it is August.
