not all teh plants i started are for me, i usually plant about 30 toms and 15 or so melons, the rest i give away to family/friends. i can start them from seeds much cheaper than i cna buy plants at the store, and i just cannot help but put a seed in every hole in the plat! it is just now getting dry enough to work the dirt agian, and now they call for severe storms tomorrow. i hope i can get out there right after work today, i may have just enough time to get a few rows up inthe drier patch. they did at least change the rain foreast to tomorrow evening/night fromtoday, but we do have a chance of rain today as well. the garden is roughly 100x100, but the rows are spaced 5+ ft apart so i can work them on the tractor. half the garden is no rows, just a few mounds and open area for the melons to run and spread. the previous owner of our house had 2 acres setup for his garden, hey he was retired and nothing else to do so he raised and sold enough veggies to pay his property taxes and electric bill for the well. he put in high volume water lines out to the garden, and i jsut cannot help but plant a large area since it is all setup for it already. i say every year in the fall that NEXT year i will cut back to just a few plants close to the house. and every spring i go bigger!

Paperwhite, I have guvar seeds -it is a nylon (?) variety, I brought from India in 1999. The seeds are stored dessicated in a refrigerator and have 30-40% germination. My seeds were started in peat pots before going in the garden. I am afraid I have planted them very close (For Tindolas, best bet is to sart from a root cutting. This is my first year for tindola. I discovered an almost dry, abandoned cutting languishing in a dark spot behind a motel. With great difficulty I have nursed it back to life. Now it has the first green twigs with small leaves. Hopefully it will mature during this season such that I can share cuttings with friends. Later in the season I will try to air-layer well -established shoots. I am a newbie at propagating plants & therefore would like to know more about how to multiply tindola plant.

Hey all, been a while! I started thinking about next years garden June 5th when we got hit with frost! Guess I wasn't paying close enough attention as I lost a lot stuff I was going to plant up. Then the balance of summer was rained out - I don't think we had one week without it raining at least once. Never watered a thing in my yard all summer. Then, and the most important reason I've been absent from here and my garden, is we now have a new little grandson to admire!!! Very exciting stuff! But my poor yard did suffer for it! Made a promise to it today as I was out (finally!) doing some clean up that I would take better care next year! And so my plans begin!! Need to extend a perennial bed to go in front of our new deck. Would like to put in some low scrubs (any suggestions?) Also cleared an area today at the back of the yard in the hopes of putting in a tree next spring! Would really like something that will give fall colour. Was reading the other thread about the Norway Maple "Prairie Splendor" - do you think it would be good here in Winnipeg? Other suggestions would be welcome. I love the fall and ours are so short - this years has been nonexistent! My Amur Maple is still green:( Trying to fill spaces with things that come to life when it starts to cool down. So looking forward to reading and seeing all that you've been up to this year and your hopes for next season! Cheers!

Thanks - I moved a few of the middle ones to a new area as the storm cleared out last night before dark, and that opening the bed alot! Now it should definitely be fine, even through next year. This is actually a pretty good time of year to be moving DL's in my climate. May has too many hard freezes, June is dry and extremely hot, now we are in the monsoon season and it's cooled off. I had to put on a long sleeved shirt to work outside this morning - it was cold! Now if I can get their drippers setup, they are done! Hooray!! Cheers, Michelle
