Question about American Hazelnut

Does anyone know if Corylus Americanus(sp?) needs two shrubs to set fruit? I read two totally different things. THANKS!

Hi ken! Thanks for the information and the link. Now that is more like what they look like. I checked some of the pictures, and indeed the fletcher scale is a very close match. I did some more searching and found another link to what is just referred to as 'soft brown scale', which also resembles it. And some of the pictures show a white powdery residue after picking them off (which appears to perhaps be eggs?), and that is indeed what I'm seeing on some. I kind of thought it looked like a bug, but they weren't moving and varied in size so I wasn't sure. This appears to indeed be some kind of scale pest. It also may explain the ants I noticed on the twigs. Perhaps they were hunting the things down and silly me I zapped them with bug b gone lol. We did have one peach tree up until earlier this spring, and there is an old apricot orchard just above our property, so perhaps this is a common fruit scale (?) So now I just need to find out how to get rid of the nasty things!! lol. One page I read mentioned some of these things are impervious to insecticides once they become bigger due to a waxy coating..ugh Anyway thanks for the help or appreciate any other insight as well. Okay, more information! Yesterday I was out picking off the dead catkins and started breaking them into pieces, more out of boredom than anything else. And in several (but not all...maybe 60-70%), I found some sort of weevil inside feeding. So, that must be the problem, some sort of infestation on those two bushes. Then, my little boy picked a catkin off of the healthy bush and gave it to me. It looked odd, and sure enough, after breaking it open, there was a weevil in there, too. So, they may be spreading to the third hazelnut, too! Now here's my problem: I don't know what they are! Usually I have decent results using Google to search out things like this, but having done this several times using various relevant terms, I'm just not having much luck. Perhaps this problem is minor and/or uncommon as far as hazelnuts go, or else I'd think there would be more information out there. I do have the option of submitting a sample to the Plant Pest and Diagnostics lab at nearby Purdue University, and/or I could contact the local extension office. But first, given this new bit of information, I was again wondering if any of you knowledgeable folks had any thoughts on what I might be dealing with. Thanks!

dont start scratching it yet ... crikey ... where are you.. any clue what soil temps are at root depth .. how low has it been getting at night ... peeps tend to forget.. that though day tamps might be moderate ... if night temps are falling into the 40s... then soil temps ... at depth.. are not going to be high enough to trigger breaking of dormancy... especially if you have flooded the soil.. at depth with ice cold water ... but really ... you get a tree that could live a hundred years.. and your expectations.. at 3 weeks are faltering.... you might want to re-evaluate the concept of instant gratification .. as it relates to planting dormant bare root trees .. lol .. been there .. trust me.. lol... ken

I would say no. Mine are just breaking bud now in zone 5b, sounds like similar weather to what I have had. They typically are one of the later things to leaf out for me. Are the buds swollen?

It's definitely dioecious. But as with most shrubs, it will take a couple of years before it fruits.

Do they really grow 15' or even 18' tall? I want them to grow tall.

They do grow that tall. They will also grow tree like if you remove all of the suckers. They provide a very dense shade.

C.americana is monoecious - both male and female flowers on the same plant, but for the most part, they're not considered to be self-fertile - you really need two different plants to get reliable nut crops. Bulldinkie may have a clump that's actually more than one plant, or there's another one nearby, if she's getting well-filled nuts.(Be aware that they're tiny - the nutmeat in a big one may only be about the size of a (small)green pea, enclosed inside a fairly thick nutshell, and you'll have to beat the local squirrels to them.)
They grow wild on the farm here - I've never seen one more than 8-10 ft tall, max; most are smaller. Multistemmed shrubs - yes, I suppose you could force it to be a single trunk, but you'd be forever cutting back new suckers at the base.
If you want a single-trunk small-medium tree, look at C.colurna.

They are obligate outbreeders, meaning they require another plant's pollen to fertilize their flowers. Bulldinkie's shrub was likely pollinated by a nearby plant, as the pollen is wind-dispersed and can travel great distances in the right conditions.
