Mo tomatoes, Mo problems

Hi everyone,

Posting for the first time though I've been reading for awhile. This is my first year gardening, and I've got an ambitious container garden going up on my roof. ...And of course I'm hitting my first round of problems with tomato plants.

I'm thinking this is maybe early blight?

But I've no clue what's going on here. It might be just clumsy pruning, but then it looks like parts of stems are eaten away far from the joints:

Any help would be greatly appreciated. For what it's worth, these two are the two anomalies (so far!) among about 20 different plants.

Thanks for embedding! Any ideas, folks? Wondering whether to chuck this plant or let it fight... not really clear on how blight/insects spread. Yarr.

5 meters from a window? And watered once a week? If it hasn't been dead for a while now, it surely needs more light. Your friend should try 1 meter from the window. Also, which leaves are yellow? The very bottom leaves, or leaves throughout? Josh

Josh, welcome to our part of the country. I live in Joplin and have a hobby greenhouse. Your plans sound fabulous, and I'm sure you will enjoy the whole experience. Bring lots of $$$ for winter heat, though, unless you have a small wood stove. GardenWeb has a Greenhouse & Structures forum which has knowledgeable people with all kinds of greenhouses. Do a search on hoop houses there and you will get all sorts of ideas on set-up, heating, etc. I like the idea of a pond in there and hopefully, some fish. You can use the water from it beneficially. Put a couple tablespoons of each food on a plate for him. Then you'll know how much he ate (minus what you scoop up off the floor, LOL). My ped with my first child told me to feed my son for 20 mins or until he lost interest, which ever came last. After 20 mins if he was still interested, let him continue. Or if I spent 20 mins trying to get him to eat and he wouldn't, time to give it up til the next meal. That helped me put some guidelines to it.

ya im thinking early blight also. You can trim off diseased leaves and spray with daconil. Or just trim leaves if your organic.

Hopefully we get some sunny weather!

Agree, it looks like Early Blight on the leaves. Luckily it is easy to control with a good fungicide such as Ortho Garden Disease or Daconil. Not sure about the stem...maybe insect damage, or maybe the stem broke at some point and is trying to heel itself.
