Nutgrass, can I get rid of it?
Comments (37)Just want to clear up an inaccuracy here: "He urged me NOT to pull any more even in flower beds because PULLING THEM SPREADS THE NUTSEDGE!! He said the seeds are in the "nut" at the base of the root system, so when you rupture/disturb the nut by pulling, all those seeds spread all over and get in the lawn too. I can't believe I've been inadvertently spreading it!!!" Seeds of nutsedge, Cyperus rotundus or esculentus, are NOT contained in the nutlets! They will be located in the flowerheads that form at the top of the plant. But they are not the problem as purple nutsedge seldom produces any seed and yellow nutsedge seeds have minimal germination viability. An established plant will produce multiple nutlets as well as a rhizomatous root system. Sometimes as many as a hundred or more. That's how the sedge multiples and why pulling is so ineffectual - unless the soil is very loose and friable, it is almost impossible to get all the roots and all the nutlets out and any single remaining tuber (nutlets) will regenerate as a new plant. So disturbing or rupturing the nutlet does not spread any seeds. But it is easy to spread the tubers while in the process of physical removal. Any tilling, plowing or even just routine cultivation of a planting bed can spread the tubers. Any tuber left in place will rapidly form a new plant. Control is not a once and done. It will generally take repeated applications of a dedicated sedge killer or a broad spectrum herbicide. Same with manual removal of the topgrowth/starving the plant via denial of photosynthesis. Most sources state a 2-3 year period of focused control methods before a 90% elimination of any remaining tubers....See MoreIs this Poa Trivialis? What is this?
Comments (16)No, it's not triangular. It's more like a little flatter and taller than the boat shape kbg. I asked the lady at the nursery if it's anything to worry. She said it's probably just new grass that was mixed in with the seed. But what kind of kentucky bluegrass would look this bright green? I've patched up partial renovation on another part of my lawn and it came in much darker than that and did not sprout that fast. The bag I used had some wildhorse kbg, would that be a bright green at first and eventually turn darker as it matures? I attached another picture, and I will pull some out from the root and get a closer shot. Its actually in a few other places in the lawn in very small patches. I really don't know. The only reason I was inquiring was because my lawn is finally an okay looking lawn. It's uniform, no big dead spots or anything, some weeds, this is the worst spot of my lawn behind the tree. I just don't want this patch taking over half the lawn. It seems to have spread fast. The pictures really do not show the true lawn. The color looks very washed out. The lawn looks much darker green 95% of it with a slight blue hue, and that bright spot looks brighter green in person. Should I maybe spray this with a selective herbicide and see what happens? It's sort of hidden behind the tree, so even if it kills it, I could always try a late reseed of more kgb in that whole spot. Comments (771)bill_g_wisconsin re: backpack sprayer I empathize with your leak. It always makes me nervous carrying these things around on my back but don't see any option if you have a lot of area to cover or a lot of plants to spray. I've had my own leaks and have increased PPE protection each year for better safety. I think we need more than what they recommend on the labels. I look like an alien in the woods when spraying. The propane tank on my back also makes me think but haven't invested in any fire retardant clothes. I have the cheaper 3 gallon Jacto. https://www.jacto.com/northamerica/products/backpack-sprayers. As far as I can tell its a good brand. They market professional users and sell a pretty much full line of replacement parts and accessories. After sales support is reasonably accessible too. Apparently, I should 've purchased a level up, however, for use with the kind of stuff we're using. One thing I'm not too crazy about with mine is that there is no way to release the pressure within the chamber in the handle where the filter resides without making a mess if it is already full. Don't know if any other models or brands address this problem differently. Also, if you go with Jacto, I recommend the white tank. It's difficult to see the level of your content with the dark blue. I also have an Echo 3 gallon hand held sprayer and have learned that Echo sources Hudson product which they then sell with their label through their channels. I did not find Echo support to be very good and, if I recall correctly, had to go to Hudson for help with that one where support was much better....See MoreWEED - a four letter word
Comments (47)Ginger: The medium Weed Wrench takes a 2 inch diameter trunk, and these were really jammed into the jaws to fit. Most of these had been topped to make them less conspicuous till I could dig them out, so I can't say for sure the height. Since you have a business and mine's just for home use, I'd think you'd need both the medium and large. The instructions say that if a root doesn't come out easily, you're supposed to "pump" the handle, "rhythmically pulling hard, then relaxing the pull." If I'd done what they told me I probably wouldn't have had a problem. But I tried leaning on it with my weight, which is what I had seen my husband do to another one, and that's where I failed. So I'm pretty sure it's a malfunction in the user instead of any problem with the tool not being able to be used by a normal-sized person. I've got a couple of other saplings to pull (I hope tomorrow) and I'll post the results when I've done it. Melanie: You're supposed to have your HANDS in the dirt. You've got them mixed up with your mind... :o)...See Morebudbackeast
