Road Trip suggestions please

Hi All

A dear friend and I are getting away for a few days. We're not going far, but do want to linger at the best gardens and nurseries within a few hours drive of Dallas.

So far, we are going to the gardens at Tx A&M. Peckerwood in Hempstead. ARE in Brenham and the Rose gardens of Tyler. The nursery in Navasota, Blue Moon and who knows where else too.

Would you tell us about your favorites?

If you are a rose fan the ARS rose garden just east of Shreveport LA (and right off of I-20) is interesting.

It is different from Tyler's in that each area within it is landscaped and maintained by differnet ARS chapters.

I like both rose gardens equally well. There is a small charge at ARS - Tyler is free.

Also just east of Shreveport on Highway 80 is Garrisons nursery where I have found some unusual plants. It is well maintained

For healthy and economical plants I visit Hughes Plant Nursery in Bullard TX(actually out Broadway in Tyler and not quite to Bullard on the right). No frills there, just good service and good prices.

There's an interesting nursery near Austin called Yucca Do.

Living Stones Nursery is my favorite Tucson nursery. Maybe not as expansive as some of the other nurseries, but a really nice selection. If you are into Mesembs, then this place is an absolute must! Personally, it was the Welwistchia seedling that got me in the door... The Desert Museum West of Tucson is really nice. Good collection of plants and animals native to the Sonoran desert. If you have time, they have a very large swath of desert with nicely maintained trails to explore. Just getting to the Desert Museum is a beautiful drive, as you go through the outskirts of Saguaro National Park and across a really dramatic mountain pass.

Thank you so much to everyone for taking the time to post your advice and suggestions, we read and digested every one of them. We had 10 fabulous days in Arizona and have vowed to return as soon as possible. We flew into Tucson with no fixed plans apart from 2 nights I had booked in a highly rated bed and breakfast in Sedona a few days in to our vacation. On impulse we decided to drive immediately from Tucson to Scottsdale. En route I reserved a room at the Gainey Suites Hotel. What a lucky find! It was lovely. Peaceful, comfortable and relaxing with complimentary hors d'oeuvres (and beer and wine) nightly, complimentary breakfast daily. We hadn't realized how deeply exhausted and in need of this vacation we were but after a night at the Gainey we knew we had to stay another! We drove from Scottsdale to Sedona via Prescott (we had lunch at the historic Hassayampa Hotel) and Jerome. Jerome was fascinating and the drive was stunning. We arrived in Sedona a day too early for our reservations at the bed and breakfast but another room was available so we spent 3 idyllic days there. The photo above is from our private 2nd floor terrace at the Casa Sedona B & B. Wonderful place, best linens ever, and amazing food. We hiked the Doe Mesa and did the Ancient Ruins Pink Jeep Tour at sunset. We discovered the ChocolaTree organic restaurant, dining out in the peaceful gardens under the honeysuckle and stars! We also had lunch at the airport restaurant on the top of the mesa where the planes and small jets seemingly fling themselves off the top of the mountain! From Sedona we drove to the Grand Canyon. It was our second visit but was just as breathtaking and awe inspiring as the first. We stayed in a nondescript hotel but drove back to the canyon for a delicious breakfast at the El Tovar before heading out to Monument Valley. What a place! It has to be seen to be believed! Monolithic rock formations rising 1000 feet from the desert floor! We drove on to Canyon de Chelly. We took a jeep tour into the canyon with a Navajo guide. The history was fascinating as were the many ancient ruins and petroglyphs. Our guide was well informed, some of her family still live in the canyon. Only the women can own property. From Canon de Chelly we returned to Scottsdale. We stayed again 2 nights at the Gainey, lured by the rest and relaxation it offered and the friendly, quietly sociable atmosphere. Our plan had been to spend 3 or 4 days exploring the Tucson area but we were now left with only one night before returning home! We found a pleasant little B & B there for our last night. We explored as much as we could, including many wonderful hours at the Desert Museum, but the rest will have to wait for our next trip! Again, thank you all, our trip would not have been so easy or so successful without you.

I was going to mention exactly what Toby did. Hottest month of the year, Multnomah Falls won't likely be 'falling' as spectacularly as usual. The trip down from Seattle will be at least 4 hours-if you go the coast route plan on it being at least 6 hours then another hour plus into Portland. Southern Oregon and Crater Lake would not fit into your itinerary, just too far to go, plus at that time of the year the heat is brutal! Seattle traffic is crummy and no parking, but it's a great place to visit. My Aunt recently moved to Gig Harbor and loves it, I was planning to visit in May but my reason for a trip to Seattle was cancelled, so I'll be postponing that, but I hear it's beautiful. IMHO I'd stick to the Seattle/NW Washington/SW Canada area. You'll definitely want a rest between road trips! I'd suggest a planned visit to the Tacoma Museum of Glass. Dale Chihuly usually has exhibits there-oh and the Chilhuly Gardens. I missed that my last trip up there but it's definitely on my next list. August would be a good time to stay in that area-the weather should be perfect.

Yes, I believe Yucca Do moved to Giddings, that is about 25 mins east of Brenham
You will love Blue Moon

Sounds like lots of fun, hope you are going to be in a vehicle that holds a lot of plants, LOL

Martha's Bloomers is near the intersection of Route 6 and Texas 105 in Navasota. Their tea room is very nice! Plants were so-so when I was there about a month ago. If you head on down Route 6 at 290, there's the big lawn ornament place (the name escapes me right now, but you can't miss it!) and if you're not into the lawn ornament thing, they're still worth a stop because their gift shop/garden gadgets inside are quite extensive. Oh, Fraziers is the name of the lawn ornament place...

I think the Blue Moon you mentioned is a different one, but I love going to this one.

I second Martha's Bloomers - love the name! ARE is of course awesome. I got an iron bistro set at Martha's and 5 thornless roses at ARE that are blooming up a storm right now with no scratched up forearms on me - yeah!

I just searched Yucca Do and they are only open occasionally. Usually Wed and Sats but you need to call ahead to come by.

Yes, the Blue Moon in Chandler. I haven't been, my friend has.

Jolana I'll bet your backyard is stunning.

The rose garden near Shreveport sounds worth visiting,,,but probably not this trip. Great idea!

I love visiting the arboretum at SFA. They have gorgeous gardens full of plants that do well here. If y'all drive near Texarkana you should come see my garden. I also love Blue Moon in Chandler and King's Nursery in Tenaha.

Just to add SFA stands for Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches.(sp)?. Only been there once many years ago but very very cool place and the testing ground for many of the best trees to grow in East Texas. Incredible specimen gardens!! Enjoy!!

There are some really nice Japanese gardens in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area if you enjoy that sort of thing. And if you head toward Houston there's supposed to be a very unique newish botanical center called Shangri La . And of course, for the natives there's always the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. But the wildflowers are so abundant along the roadsides in the hill country right now that it might be redundant. And Austin also has the Zilker Botanical Gardens.
San Antonio has a wonderful botanical garden as well as a Japanese garden.
There are beautiful vineyards and olive groves to visit too.

I love strolling the gardens and/or driving the texas roadways in the spring, and this spring has been especially delicious and inspiring! Have fun!
