Which is it, Tycoon or Millionaire? I am not familiar with Tycoon which is an open pollinated oriental type. Millionaire is very similar to Ichiban. They are long and skinny so weight is seldom a problem. They are not extra large plants and the first fruits frequently touch the ground. Just pick them before they began to lose gloss. You can protect the fruit, by placing a dry surface between the fruit and the ground. I use scrap 1/4 inch plywood squares.

I've been trying this for a couple years (I live in Indiana). Bought two 7' tall grafted trees in early 2016. Brought them inside in October, put them under a 400w HPS light 12 hrs/day and they flowered at the same time in November. I killed the flowers on accident while treating for mites. Then to my surprise plant #1 flowered again in early March. I hand pollinated about 300 flowers and 17 took. The fruit got about the size of a ball bearing and then it warmed up enough to put them outside in April. The fruit all died within 4 days, probably a combination of change in environment and the plant flowering twice in short succession. Also probably lacked enough fertilizer. Now I have both plants outside and tree #2 has flowered and I've gotten about 12 fruits to set (using pollen from tree #1 was more effective). I trimmed off many of the remaining flowers/buds in hopes the tree won't waste any energy on producing more flowers and instead focus on the fruit. Whether or not this tree will produce anything edible is still up in the air but my fingers are crossed. These plants are challenging but that's the point!

Hi! Thanks for the reply. Sun could definitely be an issue. The lemon tree probably gets about 6 hours of good sun a day, the oranges not so much. I haven't got a clue about what's been going on with the fertilization in the past two years. I was last there in the fall and didn't want to fertilize then; I'm hoping to get back in the next few weeks and put some good fertilizer on them. I hope it won't be too late in the season by the time we get there! I also want to get a second lemon tree put in the ground, but, again, I'm not sure if it will be too late for pollination this year. I'm making a note of the things you used and will give them a try. Like idaho_gardener, I live in Boise. I have strawberries (alpine, junebearing, and everbearing), grapes, blueberries, peaches, apples, and cherries. This year I am adding raspberries and currants. So far, I have only gotten fruit from the strawberries as the others were still too young, but they are all very healthy and some should start producing this year (I'm very excited). I know Idaho Falls is colder than Boise (see link below), so cold hardiness might be an issue for some things. You can probably grow everything on my list, but you might have to be careful which cultivars you select. Some of my grapes would not make it through your winters, but there are grape cultivars that will. Idaho is a great place to grow fruit as we don't have a lot of the disease problems more humid parts of the country deal with. idaho_gardener: Do you spray your apples? If so, what do you use? So far, I have only used dormant oil on my fruit trees as they have not yet set any fruit. They are disease free and healthy, but I am hoping to get fruit this year and not sure what insect pressures we have here in Boise. The U of I has some good documentation, but I'd like to hear of some first hand experience also. I tried growing muskmelon and watermelon 2 years ago, but squash bugs destroyed them. Last year they also destroyed my zucchini and cucumbers, so I am about to give up on those types of vines. I don't have any other insect pests at all... but the squash bugs drive me crazy!
