fish fertilizer Organic Based MUSKIE 5-1-1 emulsion fertilizer
Comments (12)I use fish emulsion for all my roses, both in the ground and in pots. Started doing this last year after a recommendation from one of my favorite rose nurseries, Greenmantle. I tried 3 different brands. The one I liked best is Gro-Tone made by Espoma. Gro-Tone is a nice balanced 2-2-2. It also smells better than fish emulsion often does. Gro-Tone certainly smells like fish but it's more like a fresh fishy aroma. Espoma added mint to make the scent less objectionable too. However it is pricey, and my local nursery doesn't intend to carry it as it didn't sell that well. I bought almost every bottle they had and stockpiled it.;) The other fish fertilizer I liked somewhat was Neptune's Harvest. The numbers on the bottle I have are 2-3-1. It also didn't smell bad though very fresh fishy(I think NH and Espoma use a cold processing method). The NH found at my local nursery is the mix which includes kelp, and I'd prefer not to give that to my roses as I don't think they need it based on soil and water conditions here--yours may be quite different. If I can't get the Gro-Tone, this is the brand I'll use, but their fish-only one which is 2-4-1. I can order direct from NH. The 3rd fish emulsion I used was made by E.B. Stone, fish emulsion with kelp, 4-1-1. It smelled ghastly, like rotten fish. Yuck, I did not enjoy applying it in the garden much less even opening the bottle. In addition, my roses did not respond as well to it as the other two. One reason may be that the water here can be very high in boron, and if the fertilizer also includes that micronutrient plants in this area may object (by showing boron toxicity). I've never seen Muskie in the stores so have never tried it. All the ones I used seemed to be in slightly different concentrations and thus the dilution rates indicated on the bottles were also different. I found this site on the web that carries Muskie: http://www.pthomeandgarden.com/product/9-muskietm-fish-fertilizer-5-1-1 It looks as if on that bottle at least there is some kind of info on the side. Perhaps it is application instructions???? Maybe they didn't put it on all the bottles which would be too bad. Melissa...See MoreIs Alaska fish fertilizer okay to use as a fish emulsion spray?
Comments (3)I have used Fish emulsion as a pest spray will great success. Just dilute it about 10-1 with water and spray either early morning or late evening. I dont know how effective it is for scale but it does well for spider mites Mike...See MoreToni what kind of dishsoap do you use in your fish emulsion spray
Comments (12)Sarah, didn't mean to sound hasty, but I was about to turn off the puter, when I noticed your thread. I was using a dishsoap with Citrus. One of the ingredients is true citrus, so they say. LOL. Used it for years, now it's like the brand is extinct. Can't find it anywhere. Ajax has a citrus scented dishsoap which is what I now add to the mixture. Acually any dish soap will work, just steer clear of Dawn. You poor thing..all those bugs!! What the heck happened? Sarah, it's strange, beneficial insects are dying/dead while the bad guys are flying around..that doesn't make sense? Why in the world do people use so many chemicals??? By doing so, they're killing off the good guys. Not to mention, spraying something that most likely causes cancer. I feel bad for people who don't use chemicals, yet because of their neighbors, have to breath in that crap. Sarah, the mix I use will kill mites and scale, but it won't touch whitefly..Before your plants are totally infested, purchase Yellow Sticky Traps..they work fantastic, and no chemicals. They're sold on Ebay and a place called Gardens Alive. Cost is more reasonable on Ebay. In Ebay's search window type in yellow sticky traps. Traps come with a little, metal holder. Traps are attached to these holders. Stick holder in soil. You'd be amazed how many whitefly they capture. About 3 or 4 yrs ago, I had the same problem..Whitefly. I found the source, a hardy Hydragea..95% of my plants were whitefly infested. Some plants worse than others, especially Hibiscus, citrus and gardenias. I bought the traps, placed one trap among a group of plants. Each trap captured hundreds of whitefly days later. That was it, they died. So, if you have whitefly, and want to use natural, non-chemical 'help,' buy the traps, ASAP. Keep us posted, Sarah and Good luck, Toni...See MoreFlies and Baby fly problem due to Fish Emulsion use?
Comments (8)How large are the feces? Hornworms often leave a lot of poop on the ground or leaves as a sign to the gardener that they are there eating your plants. Do you see sign of missing leaves, or branches that end abruptly, or tomatoes (especially cherries) that are partially eaten? Hornworm poop are little pellets and you will often see multiple on a single leaf below where they are currently or have been feeding. They are difficult to spot as they blend in well with the foliage but they are usually near the top of the plant IME....See Morejimster
