My neighors about 7 houses down the street put manure on their yard a few years ago & it stunk up the whole neighborhood. lol I feel for ya.

We used Turkey poo when we were doing a lot of landscaping. Talk about stink! It does the job tho, and has perfect ph! LOL

The joke concerns twin boys of five or six. Worried that the boys had developed extreme personalities -- one was a total pessimist, the other a total optimist -- their parents took them to a psychiatrist.

But instead of wrinkling his nose in disgust, the optimist emitted just the yelp of delight the psychiatrist had been hoping to hear from his brother, the pessimist. Then he clambered to the top of the pile, dropped to his knees, and began gleefully digging out scoop after scoop with his bare hands. "What do you think you're doing?" the psychiatrist asked, just as baffled by the optimist as he had been by the pessimist. "With all this manure," the little boy replied, beaming, "there must be a pony in here somewhere!"

ROFLOL, that is SO funny, PJ and Jolana! I hadn't heard that one! I think the fish stink has subsided, since I watered and then it drizzled some. I didn't see an ingredient list on the bag but there could also be bloodmeal in it; I've heard that stuff reeks, too!

Now turkey poo...oooooh, boy, I don't think you could convince me to do that! LOL

Welcome to organic gardening, I'm with you, cannot stand to smell chemicals. The last time I put down some fert it rained and the yard was smelling pretty rank something like rotting fish LOL. It doesn't bother me cause it won't last long and I know it's the health way to go for everyone / everything.
I don't spray the inside of my house because I don't like chemicals, I have dog's inside, I also have lizards outside and inside the house guess they help keep the bugs way down. My front and back yard I guess would qualify as a habitat for birds, garden snakes and lizards.
We have birds that swoop down and get a drink of water from the pool, it's neat to watch. You'd think they wouldn't drink the pool water but they do.

LOL jolana-That's amusing especially since I own 2 horses and the optimist part of the story nearly resembles some teens I know.

lindsey-at least your fishy smell is outdoors. I've been growing organic herbs and using fish emulsion fertilizer in my greenhouse. You know you're a true organic gardener when you are in an enclosed space and after awhile you don't even notice the odor of fish emulsion permeating every bit of air throughout the enclosure. My daughter walked into the greenhouse and commented on the terrible odor. It took me a few minutes to realize what she was talking about! Needless to say she headed right back out the door.

I love that story about the boys. I have three plus one big boy, so we have a house full of testosterone and the little boy digging in the manure, well, let's just say it is typical.

As far as your fertilizer smelling a little fishy, it is normal and will go away in a couple days. I used some fish emulsion on my tomatoes and it smelled a little, but not too bad. This bottle claims to be a "low odor" emulsion. Best part was it was on the clearance rack at 75% off, so I bought two bottles! I wonder how fishy things would smell if I put it in a hose end sprayer and used it over my entire yard? The neighbors on either side hardly come out of their houses, so they'd never even notice!

It came from Garden-Ville, so it is goooood stuff.
Anything they produce is great stuff.

I am excited to see results, though cautious because I realize that organics don't always give instant gratification. How often do those of you who fertilize organically do it? The bag says "spring and fall" but maybe indicated more if you want to. I just don't recall. At the price, I'm sort of hoping I don't need to do it every 6 weeks or something...because I ended up applying a lot more than I expected, and used almost the whole $20 bag, instead of just half of it, on my small lot. (I do need to learn if there is some way to release less at a time with my spreader, because I went over every spot twice; back and forth, then back and forth perpendicularly).

denisew, I've used the liquid fish emultion in a hose end sprayer before. Did the grass and everything. It smelled for a couple of days but not too, too bad. I didn't really think about what the neighbors might say! lol

lindseyrose, there might have been dried fish emulsion or fish meal in your fertilizer and that stuff does smell a lot. I use the liquid kind twice a year on most of my things. I grow a lot of natives and such, so they don't need a lot. I have a few ornamental grasses that like to have it more often. I haven't burned anything with it yet. Except for rosemary. It hates the stuff.

My lawn smells like a barn with animals every few months when I put down grains to fertilize. It's quite noticeable during the summer due to higher temperature which lead to fast decomposition of grains. It was pretty neat!
